It looks lovely, sounds superb and offers an interesting new assist for newcomers, but at its core Space Harrier is still Space Harrier and M2 is only able to do so much with it. This isn’t one of Sega’s masterpieces and therefore isn’t a must-have: it’ll have to settle for being merely ‘pretty good’ instead.

My affection for Space Harrier is biased. I was enthralled by it in arcades when I was a kid; nothing I'd seen before it quite captured a similar sense of speed and control. I've continued to enjoy it for years, particularly its Nintendo 3DS edition, which remains the very best way to play outside of an arcade. While this SEGA Ages release can't replicate the immersion made possible by the 3DS' best party trick (stereoscopic 3D), it's certainly the best method of playing this arcade classic on a big screen at home.

As with all SEGA Ages releases, M2 has done a masterful job of making this game both authentic and accessible to players of all skill levels. A variety of options ensure you can get the most out of Space Harrier, whether you're a returning veteran like me or someone entering the Fantasy Zone for the first time. "Get Ready!"
