Dive into northern Mexico's breathtaking landscapes with Mulaka, a 3D action-adventure game based on the rich indigenous culture of the Tarahumara. Renowned for their impressive running abilities, embark on the journey of a Sukurúame - a Tarahumara shaman - as you fight back the foulness corrupting the land, while drawing upon the powers of demigods. From solving puzzles in environments inspired by real Sierra Tarahumara locations, to heated hand-to-hand combat with creatures pulled from the region’s mythology, find out why the Tarahumara have earned a reputation for being superhumans.

Mulaka offers a truly intriguing insight into the culture and mythology of the Tarahumara people, but is let down by some frustrating gameplay issues. Exploring and puzzle solving is a simple but enjoyable affair, and there are elements of the combat system that show real promise, but some oversights surrounding the game’s pacing and controls leave quite a lot to be desired. If you’re interested enough in learning about the topic it wouldn’t be unwise to give the game a go despite its flaws, but players looking purely for great gameplay might want to ponder over it a little longer.

I had such high hopes for Mulaka, and it certainly started out good enough. What I wanted, based on the design and aesthetic, was a light Zelda-like game; sort of a treat arriving about a year after Breath of the Wild. It certainly looks the part, and clearly takes a lot of inspiration from the Zelda series.
Unfortunately, I found combat to be a frustrating slog, and exploration to be a bit dull. I loved the elements inspired by an indigenous culture that I did not know about before, and I have high praise for the developers for using that inspiration. I think Mulaka had a lot of potential, but it just fell flat with me. Tough to recommend.
