About
Put the pedal to the metal in Mario Kart World, a brand-new experience set in a vast interconnected environment.
Race seamlessly across connected courses that deliver Mario Kart racing like never before. Twenty-four drivers can compete in a race. Participate in the new Knockout Tour mode, where you’ll barrel through back-to-back courses and checkpoints, with no pit stops along the way.
If a player doesn’t make it to each checkpoint at a high-enough placement, they will be eliminated. And in Free Roam, it’s possible to go off the racetrack and drive in any direction you wish, explore areas that pique your interest and take some photos at scenic spots with a group of friends.

At first, this doesn't quite feel like the reinvention of Mario Kart that people wanted or expected, but the more time you spend in the open world and racing with friends, you’ll uncover a mechanically rich kart racer full of secrets and joy. Mario Kart World refines and expands the formula in meaningful ways while upping the charm in many others.
Few games have brought me as much laughter as Mario Kart World has done since launch. If you need a pick-me-up, this game is sure to bring a smile, and it feels like a perfect start to Switch 2's life.

Mario Kart World surprised me, somehow. The first time I played it, I completed the Mushroom Cup, and my reaction was, "This is fine, but I'd really rather have more Mario Kart 8 Deluxe." What, I asked, is the point of the food item? Why so many obscure Super Mario characters instead of more Nintendo favorites? Why can't we just have Super Smash Kart instead of this bouncy, rounded-off sequel?
I came back many months later and tried MKW with a fresh set of eyes. I found myself having a lot more fun this time around, and I just enjoyed the game for what it is. The open world stuff is more interesting than I gave it credit the first time I played. There is a lot of variety in the relatively small number of race courses, and no doubt there will be more to come in future DLC.
I still want Super Smash Kart, but this is probably as good as it gets for the foreseeable future of the series. If we somehow get all of the tracks from MK8D, I'll be over the moon.
