About
Save the kingdom of Hyrule—this time with the wisdom of Princess Zelda!
The people of Hyrule are being stolen away by strange rifts that have appeared—and with a certain swordsman among the missing, it’s up to Princess Zelda to save her kingdom in a brand-new The Legend of Zelda™ story!
Team up with the mysterious fairy, Tri, and use the Tri Rod to create “echoes”, which are imitations of things you find in the environment—then recreate those echoes whenever you like to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Create echoes like water blocks to reach new heights, make bridges out of old beds, throw rocks at foes—or find your own creative combination of echoes to do things your way. You can even create echoes of monsters to fight at your side in combat!

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom should be the new standard for top-down Zelda going forward. Rather than abandoning the classic formula, Zelda has shown that the old and the new can come together and produce wonderful results that reward experimentation and reinforce the joy of play. This is easily in contention with A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds as one of the best top-down adventures in the series, and we hope we don’t need to wait another 35 years for Zelda to take a starring role again.

Zelda is my favorite game series, so it pains me to say Echoes of Wisdom was a disappointment. For years, I wanted a Zelda game that stars Zelda. We got it, but it fell short of my expectations and desires.
The good:
- Some decent boss fights
- Fantastic endgame and final boss battle (one of the series' best)
- Greater freedom and exploration than earlier 2D Zelda games
- Echo mechanic is interesting, at first
The mediocre:
- I really dislike the visual style, borrowed from Link's Awakening (2019). Everything looks like cheap plastic toys.
- Music is fine but forgettable
- Most Echoes are not very useful; only a handful are needed to complete the game
The bad:
- Combat is generally TERRIBLE; perhaps the worst in the entire series. The strongest Echoes are often useless because they have long cooldowns, weird jumping patterns, etc.
- Side quest rewards / hidden treasure chests are WORTHLESS. Nearly 100% are just ingredients for smoothies, which must be tediously crafted at a Deku smoothie shop. There are only two smoothies worth using in the entire game, and only four ingredients worth collecting. I was so discouraged by these lousy rewards that I skipped most side-quests and out-of-the-way treasure chests.
- Performance is unacceptable. The game rarely hits 60fps and bounces between 25fps and 40fps most of the time.
I loved the final boss fight and ending so much I bumped my score from 6 to 7. Otherwise, I consider this a weak entry in the Zelda canon, roughly on par with Tri Force Heroes.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a Top-Down Action-RPG that combines elements of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to make for something that’s truly unique and wonderful within the series, befitting Zelda’s first mainline adventure as the main protagonist. The new echo mechanic, while not quite as groundbreaking as Tears’ Ultrahand, is still inspired, and the puzzle design and boss design is phenomenal. This may not be quite at the same level as Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but it is still an absolute must-play game.

Echoes of Wisdom seems designed for a place to play games that isn't the Switch, in a land that's not Hyrule, for a game that isn't an action adventure. Sidequest rewards are pitiable, menuing is rife, combat is clunky, and the problems with the engine since Link's Awakening are somehow even worse.
