About

A student has been found dead! His head was covered with a paper bag with an eerie smiling face drawn on it—much like the victims of Emio, the Smiling Man—a killer of urban legend who is said to place such a bag over his victims’ heads.

As an assistant private investigator, you are tasked with helping police solve this crime, which is reminiscent of a series of unsolved murders from 18 years ago. Has a serial killer returned, or is this the work of a copycat? Are these crimes inspired by the Smiling Man story, or the origin of it?

Discover the answers to these questions and more as a member of the Utsugi Detective Agency in this intense story of suspicion, isolation, and fragility.

Explore an interactive drama full of interesting characters

Continue the adventures of the Utsugi Detective Agency with the return of familiar characters—including the returning protagonist from previous games, and Ayumi Tachibana, who is now playable in certain sections of the game for the first time in the series!

Playing as the investigative duo, you’ll need to learn a lot about the personalities and backstories of the other characters if you want to discover the truth. Who is harmless, and who is keeping important secrets? Ask questions, reference your notes, and make connections—you’ll have to order your thoughts and examine your leads carefully to draw the right conclusions.

Emio - The Smiling Man has been hyped up a little too much in terms of how dark in tone the whole thing is. This is still silly, kooky stuff, just like its predecessors. The sometimes frustrating core mechanics also haven't seen any refinement this time around, which is a shame. And so it's left to some top-notch writing to save the day, which it just about does. Once this troubling and intriguing story has its hooks in you (remember there are three demos to try if you're unsure), it's hard to put down. And that, at the end of the day, is all Tantei Club fans will be looking for.

I have never really delved into a visual novel game before. The story in Emio is very compelling and had me not wanting to stop playing it. The characters all feel very well fleshed out and have great depth in their writing. The game does not have much in the way of gameplay, but I think that may be just part of the genre.Definitely a recommendation from me.

Emio, the surprise third game in the Famicom Detective Club series, is much like its predecessors in that it is a Visual Novel about solving a murder mystery, here centered on an urban legend about a killer leaving a series of bodies with paper bags on their heads. As enticing as this premise is, the game murders any potential it has by stretching the pacing to the breaking point, repeatedly forcing the player through the same facts about the case over and over again, and making them contend with some absolutely terrible design choices. Do yourself a favor and just play an Ace Attorney game instead – you get the same basic gameplay, but it’s better in virtually every way.
