Donkey Kong Bananza is an almighty re-introduction to the world of 3D platforming for DK, and arguably the Switch 2's first absolute must-play. The punching and crashing is a passing novelty that, once you get your fill, quickly becomes just another way of exploring the wonderfully varied and beautifully presented layers.

Whether it's smashing through the scenery with a Bananza Transformation or carefully planning a route to a hidden Banandium Gem, you'll have trouble finding more originality and, crucially, more enjoyment from a platformer in recent years. As the DK Rap so wisely said, "Donkey Kong is here." Now let's just hope he stays.

I played Donkey Kong Bananza on and off for the first couple of months after it came out. I thought it was pretty good, but I felt it was a bit lacking, somehow, though I couldn't quite explain why. In late 2025, I replayed Super Mario Odyssey, and was reminded what a splendid, outstanding game that is. It inspired me to revisit DKB, and the newer game finally clicked with me. It's (ironically) shallow at times, and most of the boss fights did not challenge me much, and it can get repetitive... but the last few hours completely changed my feelings, in the best way possible. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say I am so glad I stuck with it.

I'd rate the first 70 percent of Donkey Kong Bananza an 8/10 at best. The final third, I'd rate 10/10. There is an enormous amount of post-game content as well, and you'll get more than your money's worth if you decide to try everything.

Highly recommended for all Nintendo Switch 2 owners.

in the gaming future of 2026, there is no one 'Killer App', no one 'system seller', but Donkey Kong Bananza is as damn near close as one can get. When it focuses on its female lead, the music and plotlines are woefully trite, but once you regain control of our resident monke, and indeed when they team up, it's nothing but smashing, crashing, blasting, punching, sucking, flapping, dashing, zipping action from start to 1000 banana finish.
