Bastion is an unforgettable and enjoyable piece of software that stands as a strong example of how games can also be perceived as art. A charismatic narrator, beautiful visuals, intense action gameplay and heavy character customization make this a fairytale that you’ll want to dive into again and again, and while the isometric view sometimes gets in the way of the gameplay, the other aspects of Bastion more than make up for this slight misstep. We’d highly recommend you give Bastion a try if you haven’t played it elsewhere already; though this Switch port brings nothing new to the table, Bastion is a memorable modern classic that is an absolute must-play.

I played Bastion a few years after completing Supergiant's later game, the absolutely brilliant Hades. While Bastion is not nearly as good as Hades, which makes sense as it was Supergiant's first title, it is still very good and worth your time.

Like Hades, Bastion is a top-down / isometric action game, though with a much slower pace than Hades. Also like Hades, Bastion provides a variety of weapon loadouts, which you can customize to suit your playing style.

While this is the best feature Bastion has to offer, it is also my biggest complaint: in some areas, you are forced to switch to a newly-acquired weapon, and you can't change weapons on the fly. This can only be done at a weapon shop, which you may or may not encounter in a given area, though there is always one in the hub world between areas.

MINOR SPOILER: In particular, there is a late-game weapon which you must acquire and use to complete the game. It is very powerful, but has some distinct disadvantages, and you are stuck with it for the rest of the game for story reasons. This frustrated me a little bit, but ultimately did not prevent me from completing the game and feeling satisfied with it overall.

The story is quite good, well-written, and presented in a very unique way - dynamic narration by a skilled voice actor. This, combined with the unique hand-painted art style and overall presentation, makes Bastion a game worth playing for all action game fans.
