Asphalt 9: Legends is a free and surprisingly fun arcade racing game with mobile microtransaction free-to-play gubbins that could potentially ruin the experience for you, unless you’ve played enough mobile games to know how to ignore it. The reasonably priced Starting Racer Pack significantly lessens their impact, making it feel more like a ‘normal’ premium product, so if you try the free version and enjoy it, this – and this alone – is the sole purchase you should consider.

Now known as Asphalt Legends Unite, this was the first free-to-play game I tried on Nintendo Switch. As an arcade-style racer goes, it's pretty good! The uncapped framerate does frequently come close to 60fps, so if you can bear some pretty wild variation at times, it does look pretty decent. There are many dozens of real-world cars available, though you will either have to spend a LOT of real money or a LOT of time grinding to get them all. Like, probably thousands of hours of grinding.
I don't want to grind that much, and I limited my spending to $20, and even with more than 100 hours played, I eventually hit a wall where I could not advance any further without getting better "rare" cars and engine upgrades. Still, I did enjoy the time I spent with the game.
Recommended with caution about monetization.

Asphalt 9: Legends is a Free-To-Play Arcade Racer that’s bogged down by all sorts of nasty microtransactions, which is a shame because the game underneath all of that is one of the best racing games on the Switch. I’d argue that the microtransactions can be worked around, and since the game is free to play, you should definitely at least give it a try – on balance, I’d argue that the game is definitely worth the hassle.
