Author Profile

As the Editor of Push Square, Sammy has over 15 years of experience analysing the world of PlayStation, from PS3 through PS5 and everything in between. He’s an expert on PS Studios and industry matters, as well as sports games and simulators. He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them, and is a bit of a gacha whale.

I've been passionate about video games since I was at primary school, printing off Nintendo-themed newsletters to share with my pals on the playground. I love the escapism that only video games can provide, and I enjoy sharing my passion for the industry with anyone and everyone who will listen!

Experience

Sammy founded Push Square as a personal project while studying Business and Computing at Birmingham City University in 2009. Although he’d made several websites in the past, he wanted to create something more contemporary to demonstrate his abilities to future employers.

He enjoyed working on Push Square so much that he was able to turn it into a full-time job after graduating, and when the site was eventually integrated into Hookshot Media in 2012! As Editor, Sammy is responsible for the day-to-day running of Push Square, and he continues to contribute news, reviews, guides and features to the site.

I love sharing my passion for video games, and specifically PlayStation, with the rest of the world. There's no other entertainment medium that gives me butterflies of excitement quite like gaming does, and it's a dream come true to be able to engage others and share my enthusiasm with like-minded fans.

Timeline

  • 2009: Launches Push Square as a personal project while studying for a Business and Computing degree.
  • 2012: Begins working with Nintendo Life’s Editor as Associate Editor, helping to transition Push Square from a personal project to a fully-fledged professional website.
  • 2013: Becomes full-time Editor of Push Square, responsible for growing the profile of the website and increasing the footprint of its team.

Qualifications & Awards

  • 2011 - BSc 1st Class Hons Business Information Technology with Multimedia (Birmingham City University)

Expertise

Sammy’s gaming journey began with the Super Nintendo and SEGA Mega Drive consoles, both of which his family owned during his younger years. The first console he personally owned was the Game Boy, followed by a long line of systems from the Nintendo 64 right through to the PlayStation 5.

Sammy’s favourite console of all-time is the Dreamcast, thanks largely to its timeless games. The PS1 remains his favourite PlayStation though, due to its expansive library and the path it plotted from the 2D to the 3D eras through iconic games like Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot.

I have many favourite game genres, but I'd say I enjoy the Action RPG above all others! I like the sense of progression that RPGs provide, and I enjoy action-based gameplay with fun combat systems that feel satisfying to play.

Sammy’s Favourite Games

Shenmue 1 & 2 (PS4):

I played these games first on Dreamcast, of course, but was delighted to revisit them in high definition on the PS4. These two titles proved to me that games can have engaging narratives, and I remain obsessed with its life simulation elements - the fact that you can explore the world, go where you want, and use your time in any way you like.

Resident Evil 4 (PS2):

I’m listing the original PS2 release here, but of course the PS4 remake is excellent as well. This Capcom masterpiece changed the third-person shooter forever with its taut gunplay and great controls. It’s also just a fantastic adventure, with tons of iconic moments and set-pieces.

Shadow of the Colossus (PS2):

Again, I’m listing the PS2 original, but the PS3 re-release and PS4 remakes are also outstanding. While Shenmue proved to me that games can compete with movies when it comes to engaging narratives, this game showed me it’s possible to tell stories in a different way. Team ICO’s classic conveys emotion through interaction, and it’s a unique experience for that.

From the Archive

We asked Sammy to pick out his three favourite pieces of work from across his personal archive, and tell us why he picked them!

Feature: Exploring Taiwan's Underground Gaming Scene:

I'm obsessed with video games and find ways to incorporate them into everything I do. Writing this piece about Taiwan's very unique underground gaming scene was a joy, and I was so overwhelmed by the feedback I received.

Feature: Tokyo Game Show Was Everything I Expected, And Somehow More:

I'd read about Tokyo Game Show in magazines, but actually getting to physically attend was a career highlight. I was really proud of how I was able to sum up the sights and sounds of the event in this article.

GTA Online Guide: Your Ultimate Wiki and Walkthrough Resource:

I spent hundreds of hours learning the ins-and-outs of one of the PS5 and PS4's most popular games in order to produce this GTA Online guide. I think it provides a great starting point for anyone looking to get into the multiplayer sandbox mode.

  • News Nintendo Celebrates Switch In Style With Packed Taipei Game Show Booth

    Taiwan-t to see it all

Nintendo underlined its omnipresence in the Asian gaming market with a stacked booth at this week’s Taipei Game Show, where crowds of Taiwanese gamers have been piling in to snap photos with an animatronic Kirby and try out tentpole titles like Super Mario Wonder. While none of the platform holder’s upcoming outings like...

  • Review Deca Sports (Wii)

Ten sports in one - too good to be true?

Wii Sports has become a huge success for Nintendo: chances are if you’ve played a Wii, you’ve played Wii Sports, and it even wins our coveted Wii Game Most Likely to be Played at Parties Award. The easy-to-play multiplayer title is enjoyed by all demographics, and after a few quick matches, gamers and...

  • Review Bang Attack (WiiWare)

Will Engine Software’s WiiWare debut give you much bang for your buck?

Bang Attack is a puzzle game involving hammers, fruit and other random objects. The concept is very simple. Your screen is loaded with refilling objects: fruit on the first level, seaside objects on the second level, etc. To clear the objects from the screen you must “hammer...

  • Review Brain Challenge (WiiWare)

It's time to dust off the old grey matter and challenge your brain

If a WiiWare review can be judged on the sheer amount of notes taken then Brain Challenge deserves an award. We tried hard to fit everything on two sheets of A4 and still failed. While essentially being a copy-cat of Nintendo’s immensely popular Brain Age games; Brain Challenge is...

  • Review Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (DS)

Is Sonic’s first foray into the unknown land of RPG actually any good?

Let’s face it; Sonic has been a bit of a dick lately hasn’t he? You can mark the start of Sonic’s dive into mediocrity from a point in the late 90’s when someone at SEGA decided it would be “cool” to give him a “rad attitude”. From that moment onwards we’ve...

  • Review Wild West Guns (WiiWare)

Saddle up the horse and reload your six shooter - it's time to earn your badge, partner...

As children many of us spent several lazy afternoons watching old cowboy flicks, so it seems almost criminal that this classic Hollywood genre hasn't been granted a decent videogame adaptation for some time. Last generation's GUN was a modestly successful...

  • E3 2008 Nintendo Conference Live Text Commentary

The biggest day in Nintendo's calendar year is finally upon us. Sit back, pour yourself a cool drink and allow us to indulge you with all the news from Nintendo's E3 conference as it breaks.

18:15PM: I'm in shock. Do Nintendo really think they can get away with a show like that? They announced nothing. Sure Wii Sports Resort will sell well. Sure...

  • News Nintendo "Working On A Solution" To Storage Problems

Finally, Gamesindustry.biz get the scoop that the "geeks and Otaku" have been waiting for.

In an interview with Laurent Fischer (famous for his "geek" quote a few weeks ago) has admitted that Nintendo are "working on a solution to the problem". While a USB storage device has been rumoured many believe that the update will be a...

  • News "Geeks Want Extra Storage"

In what has been the slowest two weeks in Nintendo history this was the only worthwhile article we could find to interest you with. We liked the headline.

Speaking to EDGE, Laurent Fischer of Nintendo Europe dismissed the claims that the Wii is running out of storage space. In the interview he claimed "only geeks and Otaku" want more...

  • Review Magnetica Twist (WiiWare)

Does the intuitive Magnetica Twist have hidden depths that make it something to shout about?

It was always likely that WiiWare would provide the perfect platform for the criminally overlooked puzzle genre. These games have always been popular, but given their nature they are often unfairly ignored when sitting next to higher-profile releases such as...

  • News Wii Music "Nearing Completion"

Wii Music is expected to be shown at E3 with a release coming pretty soon.

With the glut in popularity of musical games (cough Guitar Hero 583) Nintendo are putting finishing touches to Wii Music which was first shown at the initial announcement of the Wii many years ago. New information revealed by N-Europe today suggests that there will be 40...

  • News Wario Land Shake - New Info: No Balance Board!

It was originally thought that one of the eleven games that Nintendo developed for the Balance Board would be a Wario game. With the announcement of Wario Land Shake many thought there might be some kind of incorporating of the Board but sadly it doesn't seem to be the case.

According to new information we've scooped up from MyWii.com.au the game...

  • News Nintendo Channel Arrives In Europe

If you go onto the Wii Shop Channel this morning you will be able to download the newly released Nintendo Channel which has a number of videos and stuff to watch.

It's all a bit disappointing really though. There is an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and some WiiWare developer videos but apart from that it's pretty much commercials for Ninty's big...

  • News Capcom Say No To A Wii Street Fight

As awful as it looks from an art perspective, many Nintendo Wii owners were praying their favourite fighting game would get some Wii love. Sadly Mr. Capcom has just ruined their plans.

The new Street Fighter, the 4th in the series and a return to it's roots, will be developed for Playstation 3, XBOX 360 and PC. No Wii version has been announced and...

  • News Wario Land Shake - Balance Board Compatible? Blimey!

The rumoured Balance Board compatible Wario game has been given credibility, but, (shock horror!) it's not a WarioWare title as many forum-goers suspected.

Originating from a link our friends over at Cubed3 told us about, Nintendo's Japanese release dates list the following items: 7月10日 DS伝説のスタフィー...

  • Rumour New Wii SKU? Hard Drive Perhaps?

Nintendo's Wii console may be being phased out at the expense of introducing a new version of the console to consumers.

According to Neowin.net the console has reached "early warning" status in a "major American outlet". Apparently this means that the console is to be phased out in its current form and replaced by a newer SKU...

  • News Best Trailer Ever: Samba De Amigo

What do you get when you put a fat guy in pink braces, a monkey with maracas and a bored family all in the same room?

The best trailer in the world of course. After the terrible SEGA Bass Fishing trailer, SEGA has finally earned our respect back.

  • Review Iron Man (Wii)

Iron Man? Pssht. More like Tin Can!

Iron Man is one of those games that is just mediocre in everyway. It’s not broken but instead it’s simply no fun to play. From the mundane level design to the sloppy graphics, Iron Man is playable but no fun at all. It’s almost exactly what we expect from a movie tie-in. Based on the recent movie release,...

  • News WiiWare Is Here

What an absolutely awesome line-up. Thank you Mr. Nintendo. Thank you very much.

So anyone that marched over to the Wii Shop Channel this morning will have noticed WiiWare has landed and us Europeans got an exceptional array of microgame goodness. The lineup was as follows: Dr. Mario & Germ Buster (Nintendo) Final Fantasy: My Life As A King...

  • Review Dr. Mario Online RX (WiiWare)

Zany pill-popping madness with Nintendo's favourite son.

Dr. Mario was the perfect NES game. A bold, simple statement to start this review, but never has a sentence rang so true in the ears of our peers. This was a game that combined mad colours, infectious soundtracks and a delightful twist on the classic Tetris formula and is (in our opinion) the...

  • News Excited About WiiWare?

Blimey-oh-riley, we are. We just can't wait to get our hands on some online Dr. Mario action (if it ever drops?) and some LostWinds...

... But we still reckon there are at least 12 hours and 27 minutes left to go until we get to waste some Wii Points (Nintendo, please let me buy Wii Points with a Solo card soon!) on micro-games. We're not sure...

  • News Pokemon MMO Please!

Everyone has always dreamt of a full, big, 3D Pokemon game right? You know - none of this garbage where you're playing the same game with 8,765,546 Pokemon. We just wanted Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow in 3D right?

Just me then? Oh well. The news is this: developers of WiiWare game Pop have just pitched some ideas for "properties have neat ideas...

  • News Wii Fit Made Me Cry

It seems that while GTA4 may be edging the sales war at the moment, hot competitor Wii Fit has managed to win the controversy war as it appears to be labelling fat people as "obese". They do say that the truth hurts.

So the original article is coming from The Sun (we know, we know) who turn some garbage about an 11 year old girl into a full-on...

  • News GTA Kicks Ass But Nintendo Are Still In Good Shape

GTA4 has had a record breaking first week outselling Wii Fit by a ratio as high as 9 to 1.

To be fair I don't think anyone expected the fitness title to keep it's crown at the top of the charts when GTA blundered along. With record breaking sales of 926,000 units and a place cemented at the top of the charts which is likely to last for a good while...
