Another week, another smartphone title that shamelessly pillages from Nintendo's back catalogue. This time, it's an iOS release by the name of Catch the Rabbit, which showcases "a mischievous rabbit" who has "stolen all the golden fruits." The aim is to catch the rabbit by "jumping from platform to platform without falling".
Take a look at the screens on this page and you might pick up a subtle visual similarity between the naughty rabbit and one of Nintendo's more recent creations, Nabbit.
Nabbit was introduced in New Super Mario Bros. U and steals items from the game's Toad Houses. Catching him reclaims said items. Ring a bell? He became a playable character in New Super Luigi U.
What do you make of this particular "homage"? Seeing as Nintendo is moving into the smartphone space, could the company take action against such blatant cloning of its IP in the future? Let us know what you think by posting a comment below.

I like the art style. Shame they didn't put any imagination whatsoever into the character design though...
Gotta admit, it does have some charming, simplistic visuals though.
Oh, hey there, Definitely-Not-Nabbit!
Kinda does look like a rip. To nintendo, this should be a good thing. It should tell them that they're games are popular for people to try and mimic and copy!
Lol gotta love the creativity behind some of these iOS titles.
It's a shame that, on a game that seems to have a minor sense of style, they can't take that last step with the main character. Unless they ripped all of that off, too.
The more important question to me: is it free or are they charging? The fact that it's free makes this a hazier situation in my eyes.
Didn't anyone else see Super Bros. on the App Store? I spotted it on the top charts before it was removed. It basically used all Super Mario World graphics, but with all the eyes edited out, and Mario had a top hat. I'm not kidding here.
I just don't get these clone games like this. Why make the character look exactly like Nabbit? Nobody would probably even put two and two together that this is essentially a rip off of the Nabbit sequences in NSMBU if he didn't look just like Nabbit. Why not give the character a different look so as to avoid the inevitable cease and desist letter?
That's...uh...imaginative.
I guess you could say they nabbd-it?
@ekreig Nice Avatar, its been a long time since I've seen anything Monk related.
@KryptoKrunch I think you meant most of games you find in mobile app stores.
@mystman12 Top hat? Sounds like Mario & Luigi's upper class cousin perhaps.
It's baffling that they would risk it for that! It would be pretty easy to change the character to look more unique. It's not like the artist doesn't have the skills. The game looks pretty nice in those screenshots!
The character does remind me of Nabbit. Looks very close in design.
Ugh my friends are obsessed with this game and they didn't understand this when I told them haha. Thank you for posting this!
Surprisingly, the game actually isn't that bad. It's fun to play for small periods of time... Pretty addictive
First Ravio, and now this!!!!!
