About

Join the fight between man and machine in the definitive edition of this critically-acclaimed RPG

Discover the origins of Shulk as he and his companions clash against a seemingly-unstoppable mechanical menace. Wield a future-seeing blade, chain together attacks, and carefully position your party members in strategic, real-time combat as you journey across a massive world.

During an attack from the mechanical invaders known as the Mechon, Shulk discovers that he can tap into the full power of a mysterious blade known as the Monado. With the mighty Monado in hand, Shulk sets out to defeat the Mechon once and for all.

In addition to the Mechon, you’ll run into wildlife that ranges from docile to deadly. Keep an eye on what attracts monsters’ attention to avoid unwanted conflict…or try your hand at bringing down an ultra-powerful Unique Monster.

Upgrade your party as you progress through the adventure by selecting equipment, enhancing weapon skills, and using benefit-granting gems. Put your dependable companions to work by filling the party gauge to trigger a Chain Attack and attack enemies in quick succession!

Simply put, there’s almost nothing one can reasonably complain about with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. What we have here is an already excellent JRPG that has been improved in nearly every conceivable way, short of a complete reimagining. On top of the fantastic story, enjoyable combat, and incredible world design, Monolith Soft has included an entirely new epilogue story arc while somehow improving upon and polishing up nearly everything in the base game, from progression systems to visuals to UI design. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is easily one of the greatest RPGs available on the Switch to date, and will no doubt stand the test of time. It goes without saying that if you were ever a fan of the original or of RPGs in general you absolutely must get this game for your collection as soon as you reasonably can. Even if you wouldn’t consider yourself a fan, we would still strongly encourage you to think about adding this one to your collection, as this is the standard against which most RPGs should be judged.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is the best way to play one of the best JRPGs of the 2010s, and one of the best Wii games, period. It combines a gorgeous, sprawling world with a fantastic soundtrack, engaging combat, and a robust story. It's a game that is not afraid to teach you to be cautious in an unforgiving environment; you can easily stumble into extremely powerful creatures early on, getting your entire party obliterated in seconds. Fortunately, you can recover and regroup quickly, power up over time, and return to take on these stiff challenges when you're ready.

The battle system takes some getting used to, and can be intimidating at first. With time and practice, you will master it, and appreciate its extraordinary depth and variety. Don't be afraid to dive in uninitiated!

XC:DE left a real impression on me, and remains one of my few fond memories of time spent on lockdown during the early months of the 2020 pandemic. I highly recommend it to all RPG fans.

You are either going to go on Monolith Soft's Wild Ride and not get off till the end of Future Redeemed, or you're going to bounce off hard off its RPG sensibilities that were toned down and depained in this Definitive release. Shulk's first foray into Takahashi's brave new world is scored by brilliant music, insanely good voice performances, and I gotta admit, a battle system that's a lot better with a guide handy.
