Super Mario Odyssey represents a shift in direction for Mario. For about a decade we had exceptional but tightly structured 3D series entries, but this new arrival’s building blocks go back to Super Mario 64. It’s a very modern take on ‘sandbox Mario’, however - Cappy and his abilities are key additions that freshen up the formula, and we have a sizeable and diverse set of lands to explore.

Odyssey will, inevitably, now enter the discussions about the ‘best’ Mario games. In the second half and post-credits - in particular - it takes on a life of its own, showcasing incredible design and development flair. It’s also a wonderful showcase for the Switch, and could introduce a whole new audience to the wonders of Mario in three dimensions. For the veterans among us, meanwhile, it’s yet another special release to remind us of why Mario is still gaming’s number one.

In any other release year, Super Mario Odyssey would almost certainly have been a unanimous Game of the Year choice. Instead, it had the bittersweet misfortune of arriving just months after one of the greatest games of all time. Of course, SMO is a much different experience than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and made for a perfect post-BotW palate-cleanser when it dropped on Nintendo Switch. Today, it stands as the definitive 3D Super Mario title, and is arguably the first true sequel to Super Mario 64. It pushes the genre Mario created forward with flair, pizzaz, and joy. It's never too late to experience this Odyssey for the first time; players of all skill levels are guaranteed to love every minute!

Super Mario Odyssey is probably the best 3D Mario, absolutely gorgeous graphics, great controls and extremely different and interesting worlds to explore are the main things for this game. Also using amiibos as special features to locate purple coins or power Mario up for a short time is a good feature, and also to help unlock certain costumes is nice as well. Another thing, all of the costumes add a layer to the game which is pretty fun, being able to dress Mario up as Dr mario, his brother luigi, a low poly Nintendo 64 costume, or even just have him running around in his boxers. This is obviously a core 3D Mario experience I couldn't recommend more
