Put in as simple a manner as possible, this is likely to be the last 2D Mario game you’ll need. It’s Super Mario Maker but with more of everything that made the original so phenomenal. Enemies, themes, game styles, gizmos, powerups, the Story Mode having an actual story, multiplayer, the list of additional gubbins is truly massive when you take a step back. There are a few small niggles here and there, but they're overwhelmingly dwarfed by the sheer joy and unbridled freedom that exceeds the original in spades. Realistically this game poses the question as to whether this is the future for 2D Mario as a whole. For any fan of Mario who owns a Switch – heck, for any Switch owner full stop – buying this game is an absolute necessity.

Super Mario Maker 2 comes close to the heights of its Wii U predecessor, but falls just a bit short. Designing courses is not as fun without the Wii U GamePad, though I still prefer the controller option over the touchscreen for that purpose. It does offer more robust tools and themes, though.
Otherwise, it's more of the same great Wii U game. There is basically endless replay value, as you can make almost anything, and 2D platformer addicts have access to more courses than they could play in a lifetime.
The problem is the quality of those courses. The Wii U and 3DS editions both had lots of excellent courses crafted by professional designers, with the former including 150 sprite swaps that enable you to play as characters like Pikachu and Hatsune Miku.
Sadly, neither collection made it to SMM2, and the ability to search and filter for player-made courses leaves much to be desired. Most courses are terrible and not much fun. Most of the most-played courses are obnoxious "automatic" stages that just show off a bunch of loud noises and explosions with minimal player inputs. They were neat at first, but they now dominate all the game's charts, and I hate them.
I wish Nintendo had provided as much support to SMM2 as it did to the first game. It could have been so much better. Regardless, it's still pretty great.
