How do you follow up a game like Mario Galaxy? Well, with its direct sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Nintendo refined and expanded upon the original’s outrageous gravity-based gameplay. The result is one of the finest 3D platformers of all time; one that constantly pushes you down surprising and thrilling new paths. After its exclusion from Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Galaxy 2 is finally available on Switch, and it’s never looked better.

I did not like Super Mario Galaxy very much, so my expectations were low for its sequel. To my delight, the first 2/3 of SMG2 are much better than the first game and address a lot of my complaints. Controls are a bit better, course design is tighter, and the replacement of the Comet Observatory hub area with Starship Mario and a map makes everything much breezier.
The last third of the game felt like more of the same to me, though the final boss fight was pretty decent. The game looks and sounds great. The odd decision to rehash the story of SMG1 while mostly omitting its central character really makes me wish SMG2 was a DLC expansion to the first game, if that had somehow been possible on Wii.
Like SMG1, I think SMG2 is overrated and not even among the best Super Mario games, let alone all-time greats, but you may enjoy it more than I did. It's still good!
