About

Following the end of the Galactic Civil War, the bright lights of The Arena burst into life and offer new heroes a platform to shine across the galaxy. Located deep in the Outer Rim on the planet of Vespaara and broadcast far and wide on the HoloNet, the stories and legends of battles that have defined galactic history are brought to life to entertain audiences and create champions seeking fame and fortune in this new gladiatorial spectacle.

The Arena brings together all-new, unique Hunters from across the Star Wars galaxy each with larger-than-life personas, rich undiscovered pasts and ability sets that make them formidable combatants.

Gear up for battle choosing from a roster of new characters, including nefarious bounty hunters, heroes of the Rebellion, Imperial stormtroopers, and everything in between. Outclass opponents by mastering advanced abilities, skills and strategies while fighting it out in intense 4v4 third-person combat and dominating opponents on the road to fame in The Arena.

Customize each Hunter by collecting and equipping them with fun and unique costumes, animations, and weapon appearances, making for an impressive competitor that stands out on the battlefield and is ready to challenge for glory.

Dazzle The Arena’s crowd, competing across multiple PVP game modes; within Escort, defense and attack skills are crucial as the team need to work together to safely escort the payload before their enemies defeat them. In Control, two teams battle it out to defeat one another and take control of the central objective area until the time runs out. Each battlefield set in The Grand Arena on Vespaara evokes iconic Star Wars locales such as Tatooine, Hoth and Endor.

Star Wars: Hunters might not bring anything particularly new to the ever-increasing field of class-based shooters, but there's a lot of fun to be had here. If you can look past the fiddly menus and 'Arena Pass' trappings that have haunted so many in the genre, Hunters offers a level of tactical PvP gameplay that is simple to grasp and entertaining enough to warrant mastering. Best of all, it feels right at home on Switch. There's certainly room for improvement but, like ol' Shiv Palpatine, we will watch its career with great interest.

Star Wars: Hunters is a decent and accessible entry point to the online multiplayer arena shooter / hero shooter genre. It's similar to games like Overwatch and Marvel Rivals, but of course with Star Wars characters and settings. I approached this as a newcomer to the format, and found it fairly easy to learn and play, and without any significant technical problems.

As a free-to-start game, SWH is full of monetization creep, and demands real money for its numerous and confusing forms of currency to upgrade "cosmetics" for the various playable characters. At least one character is paywalled, so you'll have to pay up if you want to use that character.

It's not a bad game otherwise, though the lack of real, licensed Star Wars music is apparent and very disappointing.

Star Wars: Hunters is an online-only multiplayer-focused team-based Third-Person Shooter similar to other “Hero Shooters” like Overwatch. The presentation here is good, and the gameplay is great, but it’s marred by nasty monetization that locks away most of the game unless you grind for countless hours or fork over massive amounts of cash. It’s a shame that an otherwise great game had to be tarnished in this way.
