About

The legendary shoot-'em-up is here to celebrate its 10-year anniversary in super-destructive style. Harnessing the intensity of classic arcade games combined with modern visuals, Sky Force Anniversary offers a stunning scrolling shooter experience with an incredible new social gameplay element.

Over a decade ago, IGN said, "Put simply, Sky Force is amazing." Scoring an incredible 9.5 out of 10. And now it's back. Bigger, bolder and more intense than ever.

This 10th anniversary edition adds incredible depth to the series through stunning 3D graphics, intuitive controls and a powerful upgrade system that'll keep you blasting for hours on end.

You have to grind for upgrades and replay stages to ensure you've met the requirements to unlock the next, but Sky Force Anniversary keeps the action entertaining. Trying to acquire each of the medals on playthroughs feels different enough to prevent things from getting too repetitive, and there's always the challenge of trying to get them all in one go. If you want to test your skills then the additional difficulties that can be unlocked will scratch that itch, and there's also replayability in trying to improve your score. As enjoyable as this is, it's something that has already been done - and done well - by Sky Force Reloaded. But if you've already played through that and are looking for more, then Sky Force Anniversary provides another batch of missions to sink your teeth into - albeit with a few less bells and whistles.

Sky Force: Anniversary is a mobile game ported to Nintendo Switch. Don't let that stop you; it's a very good vertically-scrolling shoot-'em-up with some neat features.

One thing that stands out about the Sky Force games is their story. Most shooters have a basic throwaway plot: "you are the last hope of stopping an evil force." That is the case here, but it is presented in little voice-acted dialogue exchanges with the cartoonish bad guy as you play. The writing is genuinely funny and adds a nice touch.

The shooting action is where it really matters, though, and Sky Force excels here. The graphics look nice, there's lots of enemy variety, and the boss fights are bombastic and challenging. As you defeat enemies, you gather "stars," which are sort of an in-game currency which you can use to buy upgrades. There are multiple difficulty levels, so grinding / repeating is rewarded.

The music is just fine. Not bad but not memorable.

Recommended to scrolling shooter fans, especially with its sequel, Sky Force: Reloaded.
