About

The newest chapters in the Pokémon™ series, the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games, are coming to the Nintendo Switch™ system later this year. As the main character, you can explore a wide-open world at your own pace, and can encounter the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon in Pokémon Scarlet and Miraidon in Pokémon Violet. In these games, you’ll be able to enjoy the iconic adventures of the Pokémon series, like battling against wild Pokémon and trying to catch them! Choose either Sprigatito, the Grass Cat Pokémon, Fuecoco, the Fire Croc Pokémon, or Quaxly, the Duckling Pokémon to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through this new region.

Explore freely in the rich open world of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet

Trainers can explore an open world where the various towns and cities have no borders and blend seamlessly into the wilderness. Pokémon can be discovered all over this expansive region— in the skies, in the seas, in the forests, on the streets, and more! Your outfit will vary depending on whether you play Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. After their release, the Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games will be able to link with Pokémon HOME.

There are still plenty more ways we’d like to see the Pokémon franchise evolve, but Pokémon Scarlet & Violet has us excited about the series' future. We really hope Game Freak can figure out how to smooth out the series’ ongoing performance issues on Switch because they'll certainly rub some players the wrong way — and they’re going to become a serious detriment over time. Scarlet & Violet is most fun and exciting when you're just exploring the world, and while there are many small new details and improvements to the Pokémon formula, it still plays it safe in a few areas. Regardless, things point toward a promising future for Gen 9 and beyond. It’s a smaller step than many may have hoped for, especially considering what Pokémon Legends: Arceus did, but it's definitely one in the right direction.

Pokemon Violet (as well as its counterpart, Pokemon Scarlet) is the first true Open-World game in the Pokemon series, and in addition to this, it also introduces multiple new elements to streamline the gameplay, as well as the wealth of strategic opportunities added by the new “tera type” feature. Unfortunately, all of these great qualities are marred by some nasty graphical and performance issues, as well as some gameplay frustrations. This is still one of the best games in the Pokemon franchise, but it’s a great game that is damaged severely by its significant flaws.
