Onion Assault is a worthy purchase if you're looking for a short, breezy platformer that pays homage to an off-the-wall Nintendo classic. While there are some annoyances sprinkled throughout — some imprecise platforming, finicky physics, and repeated visual assets — there's enough here to provide a couple of hours' worth of enjoyment, at least; maybe a bit more if you're looking to grab all of the collectible coins. Onion Assault may not prove as memorable as the developer's previous games, but it's worth playing nonetheless.

Again, it's impossible to review this game without comparing it to Super Mario Bros. 2. Not many games have dared to take direct inspiration from that NES classic, but Onion Assault does it pretty well.

I found the jumping physics to be a bit wonky at times, and the playable characters move a bit more slowly than their SMB2 counterpart (both are basically Mario). I found a few of the boss battles to be a bit baffling.

Those gripes aside, Onion Assault is a decent platformer at a reasonable price from a solid developer. Recommended.

Onion Assault is a Platformer where players play as a shirtless hunk (or his mom) fighting off an invading army by tossing vegetables at them. The gameplay here combines elements of Super Mario Bros. 2 with Donkey Kong Country, and the result is fantastic, and held back only by a somewhat loose controls and a lack of Donkey Kong Country’s depth. Still, as a solid mash-up of those two titles, this is an excellent Platformer well worth playing.
