While the introduction of microtransactions is hardly surprising considering the history of its new publisher, they don’t hit NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 as hard as might expect. It will take you a while to grind out every player (unless you just buy them all from the off), but it helps that the core arcade gameplay remains as fun and enjoyable as ever. It doesn’t quite capture the blissful mayhem of NBA Jam, but if the main NBA 2K series has always felt a little too realistic for you, this larger-than-life spin-off offers a bright and empowering way to defy gravity like Air Jordan himself.

I wish we had NBA Jam on Nintendo Switch. In its absence and unlikely return, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is an adequate substitute, as long as you're okay with the increasingly outdated roster.
As arcade basketball games go, Playgrounds 2 is solid. It brings a huge roster of all-stars from both the 2018 NBA season and the Hall of Fame, plus several other "hall of very good" players for each team.
It wouldn't be a 2K game without microtransactions, and in this case it's player card packs, similar to what you would find in the main NBA 2K series. However, you can just grind your way to unlocking everyone if you want.
This series has a ton of potential, and I am disappointed that it didn't sell well enough for 2K to continue it. Hopefully someone else can pick up the torch in the future for those of us who just want a pick-up-and-play basketball game on Nintendo Switch / NS2, rather than the deep simulation of NBA 2K.
