New mechanics, monsters and a gorgeous setting make Monster Hunter Rise a new high-water mark for the franchise. The Wirebug, Switch Skills, Palamute and carefully thought-out monsters shake things up enough to make the game feel fresh for hunters who have previously spent thousands of hours with the series, and while the package could be slightly intimidating for newcomers, it's arguably the ideal place to get started if you're serious about getting into the franchise. And, with a peerless four-player multiplayer experience, the new Rampage quests are a blast. After spending some serious time with the game, it’s very easy to say that Monster Hunter Rise is one of the strongest entries into the franchise to date, and another stone-cold classic for the Nintendo Switch.

MH Rise gets right down to brass tacks and focuses on what makes the series great: hunting giant monsters, and hunting them over and over till you have enough resources to make better gear to hunt even more giant monsters. While it runs at 30fps on Switch, that never feels like a handicap to what is a brilliant entry into the series. A Well-Done Steak-size bite of Monster Hunting action. Just ignore the Long Sword naysayers, okay? It's a flagship weapon this time, and they're just jealous of Spirit Helm Breaker.

As of writing, the most recent entry in the Monster Hunter franchise. Compared to previous titles, hunts are much more fast-paced and fluid, and the spectacle of it all is very enjoyable. While I do enjoy this game, it hasn't held my attention as much as other titles in the franchise. That being said, this title may be the most beginner-friendly the series has ever been, so don't be afraid to jump in.
