MLB The Show 23 is a better all-round package than last year's outing, thanks in large part to the new Storylines mode that adds a well-presented and educational history lesson for players to get involved in. In terms of this Switch port, presentation is perfectly acceptable, with the expected graphical downgrades made, but the frame rate can still be troublesome in places, making for play that feels sluggish in comparison to other platforms. This issue aside, though, this is a solid port that brings all the modes found in other versions of the game, making for a decent overall option for MLB fans.

I'm giving MLB The Show 23 a better review score than it probably deserves, at least based on its performance and visuals. This really is a PS5 game stripped down visually and crammed into a Nintendo Switch, and it shows. And yet, it's clear a lot of effort and care went in to making sure the excellent baseball simulation is available to Nintendo fans or those with a preference to play on the go.
It looks a bit rough at times, but everything from the PS5 game is here: all the modes, all the options, all the players. It can be a little overwhelming! I just want to play a full 162 game baseball season in which I only control batters, pitchers, and fielders once a ball is in play. That isn't really an option here.
You can play a condensed season, in which the game will occasionally force you to play as a specific player for an entire game, or only late innings of close games, come-from-behind scenarios, etc. Or, you can do Diamond Dynasty, which involves all the responsibilities of being a GM: drafts, trades, free agents, etc. Madden and NBA 2K do this, too, and personally I don't want RPG elements in my baseball game. I just want to play some baseball.
At least I got to sort of brute-force my way into playing a partially-simulated season in which my Texas Rangers won the World Series, just like in real life.
Recommended, but only to hardcore MLB fans.
