About
Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures.
Explore randomly‐generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles. Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in Survival Mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off dangerous mobs.
Create, Explore and Survive alone or with up to 8 'crafters together online, while 4 can join each other in local multiplayer on the TV or in tabletop mode, supporting both split screen and the Pro Controller. Compete with your friends in Battle, Tumble or Glide* - mini games for Minecraft console editions where you fight for survival and high scores; strategy, and sometimes just pure luck will make you the winner.
Minecraft on Nintendo Switch includes six content packs in addition to the Super Mario Mash Up which delivers:
- 40 Super Mario‐themed skins including Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach, as well as troublemakers like Bowser, Wario and all seven Koopalings
- Super Mario World itself! Professional Minecraft builders have remade the likeness of the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond, with Mario‐themed versions of the Overworld, The Nether and The End for you to explore.
- So many Mario‐inspired surprises to discover, from islands shaped like Warp Pipes to towering sculptures of Nintendo's iconic characters. We've recreated villainous hideouts, too: like Bowser's Castle, Bowser's ship, and Boo's House.
- Super Mario‐style textures, numerous Mario‐themed puzzles, dozens of character skins and music from Super Mario 64 to enjoy

All told, this is yet another excellent port of Minecraft, nothing more and nothing less. With that being said, we would strongly recommend that you pick up this version, as the versatile setup of the Switch allows this to be the most easily accessible and playable Minecraft to date. That convenience factor is the only real notable difference, however, so it’s up to you whether that justifies paying for another version of Minecraft. If you want to play the best portable version of the game, however, look no further.

You probably don't need to read a review from someone like me to know whether you'll enjoy Minecraft. More than 15 years after it arrived on PC, the timeless action-crafting-survival-open-world-building-do-anything game is adapted for Nintendo Switch as well as any other non-PC platform. Frankly, I am surprised by how well it works with a controller rather than mouse and keyboard.
My somewhat ambivalent attitude toward Minecraft is primarily that it is just not for me. The heavy emphasis on crafting and survival in the game's primary mode just feels like work to me, and I don't enjoy it at all. I did like the "casual" mode a lot more, where I can just wander around the map and build things to my heart's content, but I grew weary of mining / scavenging materials after a while, and moved on.
I've tried a few of the DLC packs to see if anything would excite me. The closest was a Capcom-licensed Mega Man X recreation, but I found the controls clumsy and it just wasn't all that much fun.
Minecraft is a wonderful game, and the all-time best-selling third-party title on a Nintendo platform, I believe. There are good reasons for that. It's just not to my taste.
