Metroid Dread is a triumphant return for both Samus Aran and developer MercurySteam. This is a super-slick, hugely entertaining and exquisitely designed entry in the Metroid franchise that plays better than anything we've seen from the series so far. With a bunch of fantastic new abilities, super tense and enjoyable stealth sections, plenty of great big boss fights and a story that fans will definitely enjoy, we can't really see how this one could have been any better. Best Metroid game ever? This could be the one.

Metroid Dread is exactly what it says in the title. No other game I've played made me feel so much dread about what might be lurking around the next corner. The difficulty is high, but if you push forward and keep trying, you will succeed.
Visually, this is perhaps the best-looking 2D Metroid game, which of course should be expected, but MercurySteam did a really outstanding job with the art style and backgrounds. The sound design is every bit as atmospheric as you would expect, and adds tremendously to the vibe.
Highly recommended, but not for the faint of heart!

Look, I need you to know that I have to take special care to remove the card from my Switch or I won't play any other game. MercurySteam polished the Metroidvania loop to a mirror sheen, dropped the music to ambient, and gave us bosses, puzzles and levels that are fun to traverse. The EMMI barely slow things down, however - the titular dread is not of being hunted, but of having to navigate through an EMMI area AGAIN.
