What we have here is a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding action platformer which lives up to the quality as expected from the studio. Its minor quibbles do little to tarnish what is a charming game and all-round rewarding experience. The ride does end a little too quickly and veterans of the genre may desire a bit more of a challenge, but on the whole this is a great little game which confirms the studio as being perhaps the best in their field.

While technically a spin-off from the Azure Striker Gunvolt series, Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX is not especially different from the main franchise. It's a run-and-gun action platformer from the same folks who brought you the Mega Man ZX games, with some unique iterations and a high level of challenge.

Instead of series hero Gunvolt, you're playing as Copen, a sort of anti-hero / antagonist who shares some of Gunvolt's goals but is still driven by hatred for the adepts, which are functionally a lot like X-Men's mutants: humans born with unique superpowers that can be used for good or evil.

Copen is not an adept, so he relies on technology to make himself a match for the adepts he's hunting down and killing. Gameplay-wise, GC is very similar to ASG in most respects. You have an array of weapons acquired throughout the journey, which offer varying degrees of effectiveness against the various bosses encountered at the end of each stage. (Yeah, it's pretty similar to Mega Man.)

I have one complaint: there is a character with whom you will frequently interact, who is clearly stated to be a teenage girl. However, she is sometimes depicted in outfits that push the boundaries of good taste. It almost warrants a tougher ESRB / PEGI rating.

That aside, the game is solid and a good time for anyone who enjoyed the ASG titles.
