About

Firewatch is a single-player first-person mystery set in the Wyoming wilderness.

The year is 1989. You are a man named Henry who has retreated from his messy life to work as a fire lookout in the Wyoming wilderness. Perched high atop a mountain, it’s your job to look for smoke and keep the wilderness safe. An especially hot, dry summer has everyone on edge. Your supervisor Delilah is available to you at all times over a small, handheld radio—your only contact with the world you've left behind. But when something strange draws you out of your lookout tower and into the forest, you’ll explore a wild and unknown environment, facing questions and making choices that can build or destroy the only meaningful relationship you have.

Includes

  • A stunningly beautiful wilderness environment that expands as you explore.
  • A tailor-made story: the choices you make shape the narrative and build relationships.
  • An edge-of-your-seat mystery.
  • Secrets and discoveries to be made over every hill.

It really doesn’t matter that Firewatch came out over two and a half years ago, because it’s just as engrossing and enchanting as it was the first time around. From the warm glow of its forests in the morning summer light to the subtle tension of exploring a rocky gorge in the isolating silence of night, Shoshone National Forest is a character in its own right. With a story that’s both funny and heartbreaking – and enhanced by some brilliant performances by its two central actors – this is an essential purchase, irrespective of whether you're playing it for the first time on Switch or simply using it as an excuse to revisit an old favourite.

Firewatch was the first "walking simulator" I played. It's certainly an interesting method of storytelling; at its heart, this is a sort of 3D visual novel, with its story conveyed through a combination of exploration and spoken dialogue (or internal monologue).

That being the case, your enjoyment of the game will depend greatly on how much you like the story. Your player character, a late-20th Century forest ranger, interacts with other characters almost entirely passively, either through a two-way radio or by finding what others left behind.

There is a mystery unfolding throughout, and I shan't spoil it. It did surprise me a bit, but overall I felt the story was "fine," not great. But the narrative dominates the game to such an extent that it is a very linear experience, with little to no replayability. Once you've finished the game - which can be done in a couple of hours - you've seen everything it has to offer.

I still applaud Campo Santo for what they accomplished here, and recommend the game to anyone who likes visual novels or walking simulator-type games that don't require a ton of brainpower.
