Despite their enduring fame and commercial success the Musou games have, in the past, come dangerously close to self-parody, and it's easy to see why critics of the series consider them to be little more than repetitive button-bashers. Thankfully Fire Emblem Warriors is anything but a mindless brawler; it combines enjoyable combat with real-time tactics, faithfully paying tribute to the two franchises it fuses together. Musou fans will love the fantasy setting and blade-based action, while Fire Emblem followers will appreciate the strategic wrinkles that series adds to proceedings. While the story is largely forgettable there's plenty of fan-service for Fire Emblem lovers here; granted, the cast list focuses on the more recent outings on the 3DS, but we imagine that DLC will redress the balance moving forward. Despite the addition of deeper tactics we fear that Fire Emblem Warriors may still be too samey for those who have struggled with Koei Tecmo's franchise in the past, but everyone else should definitely give this a try; it may well be one of the best Musou outings yet seen.

Fire Emblem Warriors is aimed at two kinds of fans: Musou lovers and Fire Emblem sickos. If you do not fall into either of these camps, your results may vary.
Much like Hyrule Warriors, which I loved, FEW takes popular characters from Fire Emblem and shoves them into a Musou (Samurai Warriors, etc.) game. You control these characters on numerous maps, running around to hack-and-slash thousands of enemy units to death. There are missions, objectives, and boss battles. It's decent fun, much more so if you are familiar with the games.
Many characters come from Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates, both of which I have played and enjoyed, so I knew the crew. The protagonists are an annoying pair of royal teenagers who must save the world by defeating the chaos dragon with the help of their friends who suddenly appeared in their world.
The writing is pretty terrible. The voice actors do the best they can with the material. The other big problem is how each mission plays out; various characters are constantly yelling at you about multiple objectives, most with a time limit, and all with the same level of urgency. Your comrades are bombarding you with the same dumb orders over and over again. It gets old, fast.
Still, I had a pretty good time in the nine hours it took me to complete the main campaign. Be sure to switch to performance mode in the settings, to ensure smooth 60fps gameplay.
