Downwell is a curious game about a young person venturing down a well in search of untold treasures with only his Gunboots for protection. Make your way further and further down into the darkness filled with nasty creatures and mysterious secrets to collect the spectacular red gems scattered about the rocks. Step into precariously placed shops and buy some helpful items or level up between levels to battle well-dwelling monsters and uncover hidden caves filled with riches and relics. No two trips down the well are ever the same!

First of all, at just $2.99 (US), there is no reason to not give Downwell a try. After all, it's the creation of a former Nintendo developer, a huge hit on mobile platforms, and a totally-unique action-platforming experience.
Beyond that, this is an excellent game on its own merits. You are an unnamed character who begins the game by jumping into a well, and plummeting into its depths. You are armed with "gunboots" that allow you to slow your fall and blast enemies coming up from below. From time to time, you'll encounter caves on the sides of the well where you'll find health and weapons upgrades.
This simple premise provides a great challenge, and procedurally-generated environments guarantee no two playthroughs will be the same. You'll also find a striking "one bit" monochrome style, along with other unlockable themes such as Game Boy and Virtual Boy mimics. The music is excellent and perfectly fits the dark and mysterious atmosphere.
Highly recommended, especially if you own a Flip Grip for your Nintendo Switch!
