A stuttery frame rate isn’t enough to derail one of the most memorable FPS campaigns of yesteryear. Doom 3 still has the power to unnerve and while elements of it may be showing their age now, the overall package – complete with the BFG Edition improvements and expansion packs – still guarantees value for money.

I've played every DOOM game, except the lost mobile game DOOM RPG, and DOOM 3 is my least-favorite. That's not to say it's bad! Its visual elements and map design were cutting-edge at the time of its release, and it still holds up pretty well.
DOOM games are sci-fi first-person shooters with heavy elements of horror and gore. DOOM 3 stands apart from the rest of the series with a greater emphasis on horror, favoring slow and careful exploration over the fast-paced, run-and-gun flavor of the other entries. As it is more atmospheric and scarier than the other titles, it feels like it doesn't really belong with the rest of the series.
Big improvements from the original Xbox release found here are improved lighting and somewhat better use of the flashlight. However, the flashlight is my biggest gripe; it is essential for navigating many areas of the game in total darkness, but it has a very short "battery" life and must be recharged frequently. I understand the intent was to make the game creepier and create tension, but it's really just annoying, and makes no sense. In a future with space exploration and teleportation, flashlights only stay lit for a few seconds???
In my experience, DOOM 3 is also the most difficult game in the series, particularly some of the boss fights.
I can still recommend DOOM 3 to all FPS fans, especially because it looks and runs this great on Nintendo Switch and is bargain-priced.
