If you’re a fan of the original, you’ll likely enjoy the minor tweaks and upgrades on offer, but don’t dive in expecting a ‘remaster’. You get couch co-op and a healthy framerate, although it doesn’t look great on a TV and the original’s excellent English voiceover is AWOL. Despite modest enhancements, the 3DS origins of this six-year-old game are plain to see, which may put off newcomers. It’s a solid hack-and-slash experience, as it always was – we just wish it did more to earn that ‘EX’ addendum.

I really wanted to love Code of Princess EX. I enjoy beat-'em-ups and hack-and-slash action games, and CoP combines both. While there is a good game here, it didn't quite click with me.

Code of Princess makes no secret of its primary inspiration, Guardian Heroes for SEGA Saturn. (A tribute to that game is cleverly hidden on the back of CoP's physical edition.) It looks a lot like the Saturn title, but with HD art, and follows the same scheme of three horizontal lanes in which your chosen warrior can attack opponents while scrolling left-to-right.

There is a ton of variety here, especially with playable characters; you gain at least one new fighter after nearly every scenario you complete. There are also wearable items for everyone that provide buffs to offense, defense, and magic.

The story is bonkers and genuinely funny. None of the characters takes anything seriously except the barely-dressed protagonist, Solange, who seems to be the only one not in on the joke. This makes it even funnier.

My complaint is a difficulty spike about halfway through the main campaign that just got a little too frustrating for me. I suspect I would have enjoyed this game a lot more if I had friends joining in on the fun, and the brevity of each scenario means a group of friends could probably finish the entire game in a couple of hours.

For all its faults, Code of Princess is a solid game, and I encourage anyone curious to give it a try.
