If you haven’t played Cave Story yet, you need to; it’s an essential title for any fan of Metroidvania style games. Its wonderful pacing, fantastic controls and charming visuals make it a must-have for fans of the genre, especially those that have yet to play it. If there was the equivalent of a required reading list for games, Cave Story+ would be on it.

Cave Story is the "original" indie game, full of heart and challenge with an unforgettable set of characters. It paved the way for virtually every independent studio or one-person developer that followed, especially in the Metroidvania and action RPG genres. You'll see its DNA in later titles like Undertale, Axiom Verge, SteamWorld Dig, and Gato Roboto. While this isn't necessarily the best-looking way to play Cave Story (that would arguably be the Nintendo 3DS-exclusive Cave Story 3D), it's easily the most-accessible. Every gamer should play Cave Story at least once; don't sleep on this version.
