Bulletstorm was positively received by critics on its initial release all the way back in 2011 but it didn’t sell anywhere near as well as it really should have – a wrong that should hopefully be corrected with this Switch version. This is easily one of the most inventive and straight-up fun shooters of the past ten years; its fantastic Skillshot system, tight combat and ludicrously OTT levels of violence effortlessly make up for any problems it has in the cheesy dialogue or story department. Yes, it’s missing its multiplayer component here and we’d love to see gyroscopic controls patched in pretty sharpish, but overall this is a technically top-notch port of a stellar first-person shooter that you should really check out – especially if you missed out on it the first time around.

I played Bulletstorm: DOSE as a Duke Nukem game, which is to say I went straight into the campaign with Duke Nukem's model and voice replacing those of the original protagonist.
The result makes a fairly bog-standard FPS adventure much funnier and more enjoyable. Voice actor Jon St. John absolutely nails the assignment, portraying Duke as confused over why he is in this game at all, and riffing on NPCs still calling him "Gray," since their dialogue was not changed from referring to the original protagonist, Grayson Hunt.
The gameplay itself is fine. It maintains a solid 30fps throughout and looks decent, if a little dated, and very much of the "grays and browns" era of mid-to-late 2000s / early 2010s design ethos. There are several gimmicks to set this game apart from others in the genre, such as a laser lasso for snagging enemies, and a sort of in-game currency earned for your creativity in killing enemies. The currency is used to buy more ammunition, which is limited and can be depleted if you're not careful and deliberate about when and how you start firing.
Ultimately, I found myself getting bored with the rigid linearity of each area and repetitive enemies. I finally gave up roughly halfway through the game when I encountered a seemingly endless boss fight that just kept going and going and failed to keep me engaged.
I do recommend this game when it's on sale, as it's occasionally discounted to less than $8 US.
