Though a bit uninspired, Brawlhalla still stands as a solid example of how to do a proper platform fighter, with several game modes, a diverse cast and a beautiful art style making this one easy to recommend. Perhaps best of all, it’s totally free, so you really don’t have anything to lose by giving it a try. At worst, you’ll find a Smash clone that doesn’t have a ton of new ideas; at best, you’ll find a new go-to for when you have a few friends over for a gaming session.

Brawlhalla is sometimes called a "Smash clone." It has a huge cross-media roster, and mimics some platform fighting mechanics found in the Super Smash Bros. series. But having played hundreds of hours of Smash and a few of Brawlhalla, I can confidently say they feel completely different; almost as much as, say, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
Brawlhalla's fighters feel lighter and floatier than their Smash counterparts. They are also more similar to one another in terms of weight and attacks. Each has its own special weapons and moves, so it's not like you're dealing with an army of perfectly-balanced characters, but it sometimes feels that way to a low-skill player like me.
The best things I can say about Brawlhalla are that it has a huge roster, an active community, ongoing support many years after its release (still supported as of 2025), and it's completely free to play. You can pay real money for additional characters and cosmetics, or you can grind for a billion hours to get some of them for free.
The roster is a little cluttered, with characters from various Ubisoft franchises like Rayman, Nickelodeon properties like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and of course Star Wars. Basically, Brawlhalla wants to be the Fortnite of 2D platform fighters.
The visuals are okay, but everything looks like it was drawn and animated in Adobe Flash. The music and sound effects are forgettable.
If you really love platform fighters and want something more than Smash, you could do a lot worse than Brawlhalla.
