It’s taken a good six months for Battlezone Gold Edition to make its way to Nintendo Switch, but those months have been well worth it. The result is a port that uses the console’s gyro controls to recreate the movement of a VR headset, and one that does so without making too many concessions in terms of overall performance. While it’s still frustrating Switch owners have to wait so long for ports such as this, Battlezone Gold Edition could be the precedent that proves VR-orientated titles could lead a happy second life in semi-handheld form.

The original Battlezone was mind-blowing when it arrived in arcades more than 45 years ago. I loved playing it as a kid (and still do). This modern take is quite good, and endlessly replayable.
Essentially, Battlezone: Gold Edition is a futuristic tank simulator with a flat-shaded low-poly aesthetic. Originally designed for VR, it looks and plays great on Nintendo Switch. There are lots of weapon options to unlock over the course of campaigns, which are randomly-generated and unfold over a hexagonal map. Each round is quick and to the point, so you can play in lots of short bursts (as I did), or complete a single run in half an hour or so.
It's a shame this is such an old game (2018), because the online community is not really active anymore and I'm sure it would be great fun in online multiplayer. That said, I still had a good time going it solo and offline. Here's hoping a Nintendo Switch 2 sequel arrives someday.
