About

PUNCH-OUT!! is a sports-action game released by Nintendo in 1984.

Watch your opponents' expressions and moves as you use a variety of punches and defensive moves on your path to become the boxing champion. The game became extremely popular with the double monitor setup, introducing intense boxing with dynamic graphics.

The arcade Archives series has faithfully reproduced many classic Arcade masterpieces. Players can change various game settings such as game difficulty, and also reproduce the atmosphere of arcade display settings at that time. Players can also compete against each other from all over the world with their high scores*.

Please enjoy the masterpieces that built a generation of video games.

Punch-Out!! is not only a nostalgic slice of Nintendo’s arcade history, it just so happens to be one of the most enjoyable boxing games ever made, laying down the entire foundation not only for the whole series but for several other games adopting the ‘behind the boxer’ viewpoint. Over three decades later, it is still a joy to pick up and play, still proving to be extremely rewarding when you finally figure out your opponent's ‘tell’ and proceed to take them to the floor. Until Pato Box steps in the ring, there is no other boxing alternative on the system and despite being content wise lacking when set side-by-side with later entries in the series, the core gameplay loop still delivers the goods. Short, sweet and straight to the point, just like Mr. Sandman’s right uppercut.

This is not an arcade adaptation of Punch-Out!! for the NES, nor is that excellent NES game a port of this arcade game of the same name.

Punch-Out!! for the arcade has a few similarities to the beloved NES classic, but with two distinguishing features. First, it was an arcade novelty when it arrived in 1984, as it had two display monitors, stacked vertically. Second, it is much, MUCH more difficult to learn and play than the later NES game.

If you've played Super Punch-Out!! for the arcade, these two games are fairly similar, and in my opinion, it's not worth owning both. However, I do recommend you try at least one, to get a firsthand look at where Nintendo was in terms of its game design ethos before Shigeru Miyamoto and Takeshi Tezuka changed gaming forever in 1985.
