About

Akane is a brutal arena arcade slasher based on one-hit-one-kill gameplay mechanics where you will:

Face five types of opponents:

  • Yakuza Guy - a common mafia pawn;
  • Tank - this is the only villain that will require more than just one katana slash to die;
  • Shooter - a sharpshooter with cybernetic enhancements. Pro tip: they never miss;
  • Cyber Ninja - a warrior who abdicated his body to become a killing machine. His dash attacks are deadly and his defense seems impenetrable. Remember however that everybody has their weak point;
  • The Boss - Katsuro, your Nemesis who evolves, gets stronger and more dangerous according to the number of times he gets killed.

Complete missions to unlock new guns and equipment:

  • Different pistols;
  • Katanas, each with their own unique unique abilities;
  • Gadgets that grant small but significant improvements in combat;
  • Boots that change the dash and the way you move on the screen.

Make a good use of your special Samurai Skills:

  • Dragon Slash - dash forward killing every enemy on your way;
  • Dragon Slayer - kill all enemies on the screen.

While it might not share the intricate levels and levelling up mechanics of Hyper Light Drifter: Special Edition, Akane balances out its lack of topographical variety with a simple yet challenging set of rolling objectives and an increasingly tough variety of enemies to slay. Death is constant in those first few hours, but persevere and you'll discover a hack 'n' slash survival game that rewards precision, position and quick-thinking. With a brilliant chiptune/synth soundtrack and an art style that wears its influences front and centre, Akane has plenty of charms for those willing to learn to wield its blades – even if it does become slightly samey over time.

Akane is yet another hidden gem from QubicGames that punches far above the weight of its $5 asking price. It looks good, sounds great, and offers quite a bit of fun to go along with its simple premise.

In essence, Akane is a top-down 2D action hack-and-slash survival game. You are Akane, a gun and sword-wielding woman seeking revenge in a cyberpunk Tokyo. Hordes of enemies charge at you in an arena, and you must shoot or cut down as many as possible, as quickly as possible. You have a few special moves at your disposal, and combo kills are essential to progression. The more combos you pull off, the more you can upgrade your loadout.

It must be said that the music is really, really good and a perfect fit for this little arcade-style brawler. It perfectly matches the energy and atmosphere, and composer Cybass really shows off their skill here. You can buy the soundtrack on Steam, and I recommend it. It's that good!

Don't sleep on Akane. It's frequently on sale for just a couple of bucks, and still a bargain at full price.
