Review Dr. Mario Online RX (WiiWare)
Zany pill-popping madness with Nintendo's favourite son.
Dr. Mario was the perfect NES game. A bold, simple statement to start this review, but never has a sentence rang so true in the ears of our peers. This was a game that combined mad colours, infectious soundtracks and a delightful twist on the classic Tetris formula and is (in our opinion) the...

News Dr Mario WiiWare Pulling A Sickie?
From the very moment a Dr Mario game was announced for WiiWare we’ve been eagerly anticipating its arrival. Whether we’re supposed to call it Dr. Mario Online RX or Dr. Mario & Germ Buster, it doesn’t matter to us; we just want to play it already! It was a surprising move for Nintendo to not make this available for the North American WiiWare launch last Monday, but now it looks like we may have to wait a little longer still.
With only Star Soldier R and Ko...

News New name for Dr. Mario WiiWare
Since we first heard that Dr. Mario was coming to WiiWare there have been a few different western names for the game circulating on the net such as Dr. Mario's Virus Buster and Dr. Mario & Bacteria Extermination, both likely direct translations of the Japanese title, Dr. Mario & Saikin Bokumetsu.
Having checked out the new Nintendo Channel...

Any way you look at it, Dr. Mario Online Rx is a prescription for fun that everyone can enjoy.

i'm getting this for sure. i loved the nes original (in uni residence, that game was a religion. tons of people were playing it in the common rooms all day and night) and i'm definitely gonna love this one. i still play it on gameboy now and then.
I've never really been able to play a Dr. Mario game before so, I'll make sure to pick this one up.
I finally got to play the original Dr. Mario the other day for the first time. I don't know how it escaped me all these years, but I had a really hard time putting down the controller.
This will be AWESOME!
This is definitely on my wishlist.
Not sure about this one; I'm more waiting for Bomberman WiiWare than Dr. Mario.
Is it worth getting the original if this one comes out? Anyway, this new version looks real sweet. I would hate to also get the original and then see that's it's the same game as the new version.
It game looks great so far.
I have a feeling this will be the first WiiWare game....
"I have a feeling this will be the first WiiWare game...."
Let us hope so! This is, honestly, my second most hyped about WiiWare, right under Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Little King and the Promised Country, an awesome looking country-builder game!
"It's easy to be critical of a game you just have no hope in hell of getting in to. Not addictive; not aesthetically-pleasing; not fun. Dr. Mario is perhaps my least favourite game of all time. Admittedly, I've never played this edition, BUT LOOK AT IT. Dreadful."
That's what I sai about Dr. Mario 64 on my N64 tribute Bebo page. I'm applying it here too cause it'll be the exact same game!
Holy cow!!! They stole my mii in that screen lol.
I had Dr.Mario on GB and i enjoyed it. And since this has wifi i will probably get this.
Any Mii incorperation into a game looks cool, i just played Dr.Mario on the gameboy the other day... i cannot wait to get this..
Online vs mode?
mini-games?
mii support?
This might be the best Dr.Mario game yet.
"The title supports the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service, allowing players to compete with one another over the Internet."
all my dreams...
This will became the Wiware KA!
I have the old one on my NES and it rocks. I am downloading this ASAP when it releases
I just checked the Ninty website, and apparently, we won't see any of these games in the US until at least May 12th
http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/9ecTTNYePHMMnXqfuH789XA-56vcAQdi
@StarDust - That has been announced a few days, if not weeks, back. I'm okay with the May 12th release date. Why? In just one day, I will have SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL to hold me over!
If it has a good price I will be getting this.
Yes! This game has such a nostalgic element to it, for me... I am, once again, full of joy!
dr. mario and tetris on a new nintendo system? it's like i'm a kid again... too bad they messed with the fever music (i love the original fever music sooo much)...
Do we have an expected price for this yet?
@Jogurt the Yogurt. It will be 1000 points in Japan. Can't see them putting the price up for other regions.
I'd be all over this if it was not for the fact i'm essentially buying a game I already have twice only this time with Miis, a mostly ghost town Wi-Fi and that slide mode.
This is the only WiiWare game I'll probaly buy. I just hope It has the option to turn the Wiimote on it's side instead of using the motion sensor or I won't ever get a wiiware game
Dr. Mario will never stand a chance to tetris. Dr. Mario 64 was nice playing once or twice, but not worth spending money on. The wii-ware game will be nothing different.
a game that had me stopping to play instead of tetris
I think i'll get this even though im not a big fan of tetris
Looks a little strange compared to the original. Might have to get it though.
Really have to get this one. Here's my WiiWare Wish List:
-Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A King
-Dr.Mario Germ Buster
-Everybody's Pokemon Ranch
-Tiki Tori
-Defend Your Castle
-Tetris
-Bomberman
and by the Way May 12 is when WiiWare comes to America!!!!
WAhoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Even though it's on WiiWare, it's good to know that there is a new Dr. Mario game. There hasn't been one since Dr. Mario 64. I wonder why the series was absent on the Gamecube compared to other Mario spin-offs?
Wow, now it's $10? Ehh, not sure if I want it now
I just spent my last 1000 Wii Points on Ocarina. If I get some more, I'll pick this one up.
How good is Dr.Mario? Is it different then other puzzle games?
@ SuperSonic1990
Dr. Mario is a very highly rated game amongst puzzle games. It is seen as one of the best puzzle games of all time, for various reasons such as it great music and its sheer fun & advictivness. Along with the likes of Tetris, Dr. Mario is part of the 'cream of the crop' out of a countless number of puzzle games out there. Basically if you want a top quality puzzle game, get this .
Just checked the IGN website and it says that Dr. Mario Online RX will be out next week on the 19th of May.
That makes up for today's WiiWare lackluster launch then.
Well just to let u know that next week on the 19th of May were gonna get some cooler wiiware games as...
Dr. Mario
Star Soldier R
Toki Tori
Could it be that the feture supports aren't included yet? Beacause I heard about Mii Support, Wifi Support and a special Demo support
That's true but right now i'm all about online play despite not getting FFCC My Life as a King.
is this really coming out next week in the U.S or is it just a guess?
^ According to IGN it is.
I'm not getting this but I know someone who'd be all over this if he had a Wii.
Anyway, Dr. Mario Rx seems pretty good but personally, I don't think it's worth 1000 especially since I can see it getting repetitive after a while. I'm looking forward to other titles to worry about Dr. Mario.
Its gonna come out next week on the 19th cant wait!!... also some cool shooting game too called "Star Soldier R"
Yep yep.
Star Soldier R seems great but I'll save that for its game page.
As for Dr. Mario, what I love is how apparently, you can use WC24 to GIFT a Demo to your Wii Friends. Now I just gotta find someone who plans to get Dr. Mario to let me try the game.
@Knuckles. Me too, since I won't pony up for this latest version.
Heh, yeah. 1000 is just too much of an asking price even though it is a first-party release. Yeah, most don't know the game allows you to let your Friends try a demo of it which I think is a great idea.
This game seems to borrow a lot of sound effects from the relatively "underplayed" Dr. Mario 64. That is a good thing, though. I highly anticipate this, and I can't wait to play some Dr. Mario online.
I want it; i reserved 1000 ponts since March for this game
@Clayfrd
This title probably guarentees we wont get the N64 version on VC, since its this with less features. (assumption)
No, DR. Mario 64 has a story mode too, as far as I've heard this has only classic and online multiplayer, but I guess the NES and SNES version would be virtual dust traps
cant wait for this one! i used to play dr.mario 64 all the time. like my childhood all over again!
In europe it's called dr.mario & Germ buster... Is there a difference??
I can't wait for this game, its by far my most anticupated WiiWare game so far.
I've been playing Dr. Wario (an unlockable version on GBA Wario Ware inc. of the NES Dr. Mario with Wario as the doc, limited music and different faced virus') a lot recently because I'm very hyped about this game.
@Bensei sure Dr. Mario 64 has story mode, which this game doesn't (presumably) but I'd take Virus Buster, Mii support and online multiplayer over story mode any day.
@MrLopez
Nope, only silly name changes
@Objection_Blaster (50) I seriously doubt we'll get Dr. Mario 64 as well. I have Dr. Mario 64, though, and I was saying the sounds were directly borrowed from said game. IMHO, Dr. Mario 64 is the best Dr. Mario, and I hope this is just as good or better. It looks fantastic, and the new controls look promising.
Dr. Mario 64 = Doubt it. But my friend is a huge enthusiast of DM64 so he'd be all over this if he had a Wii.
I really hope this game comes out this Monday DX.
Man we better get this game on monday man and ive been waiting for this to come, download and play it too!!... please give this to us on monday and i dont want to wait anymore!!!!
It seems as if now this won't come out on Monday in the USA. You never know though, all that could change!
I dont think we are gonna get Dr. Mario on monday at all, i can already tell... we got the 2 set wiiware games coming up monday already and they are...
Criiter Round Up
Star Soldier R
Well if you European people are gonna get Dr. Mario, i hope you really enjoy it and have fun playing online too.
I'm starting to look forward to this, it's great that the demo feature is going to be available for us. I wonder if we Australians will get the games on either the Tuesday or Wednesday...
I think to me the reason why were not getting this game tomorrow cause were gonna get Wii Fit on wedesday as well and they want people to try it, play and enjoy it as well... thats what i think.
whats the big deal about Wii Fit? No gamer wants it, just the casuals and grandmas. IMO
@Big=Sexy: Wow! I am a fairly large dude (27 years, 5'11", and averaging in size between 250 and 275 pounds), and I immediately thought that I would never be able to use it, but I just looked up the specs and apparently, it supports up to 300 pounds!
I need to stay in shape to maintain health, which is why I sometimes ride my bike 7.5 miles to work instead of taking the city bus. I love my Wii (and the rest of my old-school Nintendo collection) for the games, and wonder would I really take the time to do this everyday, or just wanna use my Wii to Brawl, Kart, stomp goombas, etc? My mother would probably appreciate this more than I would.
Ok people... once again, i just checked the IGN website and now the date has changed to May 26th and thats next week on Monday Memorial Day too as well.. heres the link and it says it all... hopefully and im hopefully that is the final date release too.

US: May 26, 2008
Japan: March 25, 2008
Europe: May 20, 2008

Let's hope that doesn't change. I wanted it today.
cannot wait for this to come out!!! gonna buy me another wii points card tommorrow =P well, i'll also post my wii number on here tommorrow in case any of you want to play me ok?
One more thing...I have a little dilema...i ran out of memory on my wii a while ago, from buying soo many vc games...and have since had to use an s.d. card...anyone else see the problem with this??? i do, becuase its a nuisance having to always copy onto my wii when i want to play something...Nintendo should make an extra something to stick in ones wii, that makes it hold more!!! if you agree, comment back =P
@Kenji510: are you serous!?!?! i cant wait that long for dr mario!
@ Wiireview123- yes im serious and hopefully this will be the final date release for this game next week... i cant either!!.. i been waiting for sooooooooooo looooooooong!!
Quick question, for the people who have already purchased it, are you able to control the game using the WiiMote as a classic Nintendo controller - without having to point at the screen? I hope so...
There are two different modes. The one with the classical control is even bigger
this game is never coming out in the US.
in my mind i think dr mario is like tetris
@ Jona-- not really(I find this trickier and 100% more addicting)
BTW I need a review before I can determine if it is worth it or if I should just stick to my NES version
whoever can answer whether it is so much better plz do
@x.SuperMario.x- oh its coming alright and it better be out next week on the 26th of Memorial Day... i dont want to wait anymore and im just sick of it already... i dont have patience either.
I got this as soon as wiiware became availablein the UK (early hours of the morning before I went to bed)
...and its good. Its actually decent value because they have used a similar online scheme as they used with Mario Kart wii, reaaly easy to find online random matches using the 5000 point staring rank system, you can invite frineds (who dont even have the game) to play online... good use of mii support, nice selection of ingame options in regard to type of game, speed & difficulty etc...
also the Germ Buster game is very fun, especially in 4 player mode.
I have to say this is VERY good value for money at 1000 points.
@ Pocketim - Can you play random "worldwide" matches on the demo version? Because I went out and bought the full version straight away I have no idea what the options are like on the demo version...
also for 1000 points you effectively get TWO games The Germ Buster game seems like a different game altogether, much more like a four player party game although you can play solo if you like. So bare that in mind once you have played the demo a few times.
I hope we still gonna get this game on the 26th cause now i see other wiiware game on the "Coming Soon" section like Gyrostarr, World of Goo and Toki Tori.... I be surprised if we did got all 4 wiiware games next week and one of them has to be Dr. Mario in it too as well... i dont want to see this date change again just like it was on the 12th, the 19th and now its posted on the 26th.. this better be the final release date and keep it the way it is too.
I got it today and its great!!!
Glad to hear it!
Kenji, I certainly hope so too.
@KnucklesSonic8- yeah i know i really hope so too... only 5 more days to goooooooo!
There is no reason why Dr. Mario won't be out on Monday. Europe and Japan already have it.
Well... we need this game too since there are Dr. Mario fans in the U.S. as well and ive been waiting for this game for so long too since the wiiware launched and only 2 more days to go... hopefully the 26th is the final release date... no more waiting please!
^ I shall laugh so hard if its not released tomorrow.
^ i'll cry.
even though i predicted the US wouldn't get Dr. Mario until June.
We are getting it tomorrow!!... cant wait! goes and prays
@WiiRevolution1: How nice of you to do that. xD
@x.SuperMario.x: So did another buddy of mine.
@Kenji: No need to pray, bud!! I bet you're so excited. I sent you a Wii Message to tell you the good news since you said you were contemplating never making comments on here again!! XD
@KnucklesSonic8- Alright!!.. i am really excited right now and imma go and download this game right now and play it too and try the online feature too as well!
I can't wait until someone sends me the demo, too.
Go Kenji!!
Anyone who wants a Dr Mario demo, or wants to find friends to play online with. Please register with vc-forums.com and use The official Dr Mario WiiWare code swapping thread! to swop your codes on.
Please no more codes or email addresses on this page. Only discussion of the game - thanks
Well worth the $10. I'm so glad it was released to the US on the holiday. We now have a little Dr. Mario tourney and BBQ slated for the afternoon.
Dr. Mario is second on my must have wiiware games at the moment. So far I want lostwinds more. But this will be my first Dr. Mario ever, so I'll probably have fun, I'm hoping someone will send me a demo first though.
Dr. Mario takes less memory in the US than Europe but more than Japan. Weird.
I'm actually more fond of the Tetris consept that the Dr.Mario consept.
I guess this is not a game for me, even though I love the Mario character. I'm sorry.
I download this game on Monday.
And I Love It.
I got the demo of the game and played a few online matches. That was my first time playing a Dr. Mario game, and now I can barely wait until I get some more wii points.
I got it yesterday. It's loads of fun, classic and Virus Buster are both equally great. I can't beleve I ued to think that Dr. Mario would be the biggest waste of points ever.
I'm not huge on puzzle games, but I really enjoy this game. 8.5/10
hi i just download an update for this game it cost me 99 of wii space
does anyone knows whats this update please
Someone please answer his question. The difference between a 100 and 200 block game is bigger to me than any other factor right now.
hi i just check
the update give you the chace t use clasic controler GC controler and ninchuck to play
@Roboto
So how big is Dr Mario to download now? Can you get the smaller version instead?
i dont know if you can get the smaller one wich was like 93 blocks and the update 99 blocks i gues you get now the complete one
The file size is still the same for the US: 93 blocks. I had to delete it first to make room for the re-download because my Wii system memory is stuffed. I am a big Classic controller fan, so this download is a no-brainer for me.
I've never played Dr. Mario before, how is it? I've played falling block puzzlers before and I've honestly never liked them, with the exception of Tetris, Lumines, and Meteos. Falling block puzzlers(with the exception of the ones I just mentioned) have a tendency to screw you, by giving you a piece that you absolutely don't need, and wind up having to cover up a potential line, because you had to put it /somewhere/.
Does Dr. Mario come with this game-ruining fault?
@Mrniceguy
Nope (IMO) and I dont like puzzle game much either. See my full comment on Dr Mario review page.
i had dr.mario for gba but i didnt really liked it...but i think i get this one...because you can play in the internet....
@Kenji510
Thanks, you inadvertantly answered all of my questions and convinced me that the game is fun and worth buying, as I quickly went to the video review from that IGN link you posted. The review was very helpful, especially since it showed, and explained, a lot of the gameplay. It also gave a different take on the Virus Busters portion of the game, saying how it's better for co-op, but can be done competitively. Now I'd buy it just for the Virus Busters, though the rest looks okay, too, since it doesn't seems like the computer screws you very often by giving you a piece that you can't use, especially in Virus Busters, as it seems like it would be physically impossible not to find a use for one of them. Once again, thank you, and thank you IGN for reminding me why I used to go there so much.
Not to say the review here is lacking, it was informative, it's just that, what I really needed was a video that isn't ripped from the Nintendo Channel, because that one wasn't ever really all that helpful to begin with.
Hi would anyone like to swap friend codes preferably anyone who can speak english thanx.
Thanx Big=Sexy your a true friend and can't wait to play against u sometime.
Unfortunately I can't register or login so I'll have to mail 'em here if thats alright?
Here's my friend code for wii:
0151-6459-4710-6510
Dr.mario
1754-9116-6042
Mario kart wii
4682-8580-5156
I love this game so much on Wi-Fi. I admit... I suck at it, however.
Sooooooo... someone plz explain to me, is this basically just a tetris like game that everyone is crazy over cuz its wifi or is there more to it....i dont see how this game is the number 2 game out right now, I NEED CONVINCING LOL
there r games were u have to match colors reglarly online except they dont have mario and its not on wii im not gonna get this
anyone know the scoring system online? I'm wondering if I lose more points if I kill myself rather than lose a match
Because this game came out that means there won't be Dr. Mario 64 on the VC.
I've never played a Dr Mario game so i'll give this one a go
Dr Mario game is still fun on DSi
As i'm new to this site,i do not have an idea that how to start the game.
Everytime I click on the game link some other page gets open and I'm not able to play game. Can anyone guide me that ow to start teh game
Bleh, the DSi version is better.
How I started this game?
HOW TO GET STARTED ???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
@Suzana, zeena: To get started, turn on your Wii, go to the Wii Shop, and purchase this game. Once you've got it downloaded to your Wii, select it from either the Wii or SD Card menu.
