Power Rangers is one of those franchises that simply refuses to die. There's a good chance you were into it as a kid, whether that was back in the '90s heyday when everyone – and we mean everyone – was Rangers crazy or anytime throughout the last 25 years of Morphin' Time. And it's still going strong, with new series' of increasingly bizarre backstories, a continued overuse of the word 'Mega' and enough merchandising to make George Lucas green with money lust. So, of course, it makes perfect sense for a licence with this much history to re-dip its toes in the fighting game ocean in 2019.
This isn't even the first time we've had a Power Rangers fighting game either – Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition takes that credit way back in the days of the Mega Drive/Genesis – but Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid marks the first time we've seen a proper attempt to meld multiple incarnations of the spandex-loving heroes with a modern fighting game setup on consoles. The results are mixed, but not in the way you might be imagining. Shockingly, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is a solid little fighter, both locally and online; it's just got some serious problems with base content and its approach to DLC.
Developer nWay has primarily been involved with mobile platforms thus far – having built a handful of fighting games, including 3D arena brawler ChronoBlade – but with Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid, this San Francisco-based studio has gone for a more traditional setup with each team of warriors battling on a single plane. Each match consists of three characters from Power Rangers canon – including memorable Rangers such as Tommy Oliver (the original Green Ranger) and Goldar (the grumpy winged ape from the first couple of series) – with each fighter possessing their own health bar. In order to beat your opponent, you'll need to defeat all three of their members to claim that elusive 'KO'.
You can swap between each member of your team at any time, as well as using each one for a Swap Strike-style assist can help continue a combo (if you're currently the aggressor) or break an ongoing beatdown (if you're being forced into defence manoeuvres). As a concept, these mechanics have been used for decades – most notably in the old X-Men games and the more enduring Marvel Vs Capcom series – so rather than rewriting the rulebook, nWay has simply taken note of what works and fitted it into the Power Rangers universe. Character health bars regenerate when benched, so there's a tactical side to tracking your health mid-combo and swapping out accordingly. You can even call in from a choice of three MegaZords (known as Ultras) for a special super attack.
At its core, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is a surprisingly robust fighter. nWay may have been responsible for the Power Rangers: Legacy Wars – a mobile-based fighter based on a vaguely similar concept that incorporated card-based attacks and Street Fighter cameos – but this is very much a console-focused title. Character animations are smooth and almost any move can be blocked or countered in some way with plenty of smooth transitions between each, creating a more even experience that'll appeal to casual fighting game players. We experienced very little input lag either, even when playing online in ranked matches, and the 60fps framerate holds solidly in both docked and handheld modes – even when all three of your team are on-screen.
So it plays decently, and runs impressively well, so why did we elude to a mixed reaction at the top of the review? Well, it all comes down to how Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is being rolled out. There are two versions, a Standard Edition and a Collector's Edition, with a good £20 in price between the two. The Standard Version comes with nine playable characters, three Ultras and five arenas. And that's it. With 25 years of history, you get nine rangers and villains. Nine. It's more irritating when you realise three more characters are locked behind the Season One pass, with presumably more lined up for future seasons.
Where are the Rangers from the 2017 film reboot? Why not include a Ranger of each colour from across the Power Rangers universe? Why have such a lack of variety to your arenas when you have such a rich tapestry of locations to pick from? In age of Fortnite-style season pack release plans, this approach is hardly surprising, but it gives Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid a distinctly free-to-play feel when you're actually coughing up at least £18 to play the base version.
Conclusion
Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid isn't some cheap tie into a quarter-century-old franchise – at least not in sense of its core mechanics and gameplay. With a smooth 60fps in all formats on Switch, lots of modes to play through and support for ranked and casual bouts online, it's a decent fighter, even without the licence. However, an ugly yet suitably contemporary approach to content accessibility leaves this game feeling frustratingly spartan to anyone who doesn't invest in a rolling number of ongoing season passes. This seems to be the way all fighting games are going – just look at Dead or Alive 6's awful DLC setup – but it's not a welcome direction.

A strong pass
No, no, Power Rangers.
6/10 Ouch, fans of both Power Rangers and Super Sentai should stay away from this game.
Such a shame to hear that. Even though I'm no fan of the Power Rangers (always thought they looked ridiculous and cheesy, and I say this as someone who grew up on old-school TMNT) I'd thought that this looked like a promising fighter. Seems that the developers can't shake off their micro-transaction-filled mobile roots, and that's unfortunate. Such wasted potential.
A shame too. I was looking forward to this as I am a HUGE Power Rangers fan. I'll hold out for a physical release with all content included. This season pass nonsense is ruining gaming.
Alright super sentai, your turn.
Seems like a good game ruined why do publishers think this is acceptable it is on phones cos thats what people do but not on full price console games but the publisher is the one who will get hurt in the end MK will be the same I bought MKXL cos it includes all the dlc but there is no chance I would have bought the base game and then spent the same amount on dlc
I agree with the dislike of the DLC model.
It works in games like Fortnite, where you pay £7.99 once and steadily earn rewards and enough virtual currency to perpetually afford future season passes.
But in a game that has an upfront cost? Nope. Not OK.
Do it right and people will spend more on additional DLC/ micro-transactions (I’ve spent more than my inital £7.99 in Fortnite, just because the game is so rewarding and fun).
Get it wrong and it just turns people away.
Nobody gonna say it??? No? Okay fine, i'll say it:
Power Rangers: Battle for the Greed
There. I'm going home.
I'd get it if it's 60 percent off. I'm not a Power Rangers fan but I'd love a Marvel Vs Capcom styled fighter on the Switch.
This disappoints me as a huge Power Ranger fan. Maybe when all is said and done and this and its DLC is cheaper, I'll bite. But it stinks this was the direction they decided to take
Power Rangers - The Morphin DLC?
I have been enjoying the game, although my biggest gripe has been the lack of content. At its core though, it is a really fun game and it runs surprisingly well online and off.
I hope people shun this game and send a clear message. We don’t like this model of dlc
Correction: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Fighting Edition (1995) was the second Power Rangers fighting game and it was for the Super Nintendo. You are thinking of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1994) for the Genesis/Mega Drive.
I absolutely loved fighters when I was a kid. SFII coming out on the SNES (so I could play it without my parents driving me to the arcade and putting in a ton of quarters) was a cause for excitement. Dead or Alive 3 being an Xbox exclusive was actually why I went to Microsoft's console back in the day having grown up on Nintendo before switch to Sony for the PS 1 and 2. Somewhere along the line though, the genre lost me hard. Instead of having to play the game for hours to unlock new fighters and/or costumes, those unlocks were now behind paywalls. It seems like this game is guilty the same things that killed the joy I used to find in these games. I really really dislike that DLC and microtransactions are here to stay. I miss buying a game and that being it.
TLDR; Get off my lawn you rotten kids
As a hardcore PR fan let me point this out - Battle for the Grid is not a bad game! While the backgrounds are rather bland, the character models are more than decent and the game plays FANTASTICALLY! I can't stress this enough! I'm amazed at how great the combat really is and that there's little-to-zero lag in online matches.
But with that being said, the roster size is PATHETIC! Had it been a 1v1 fighter, it would've been OK. But at 3v3, you end up fighting the same character 4 times in Arcade mode AND have them be a part of your roster.
We know of at least 2 more characters that should've been there at launch - Zeo Gold Ranger and White Mystic Ranger. But both them and the supposed Story Mode (written by the staff of the Boom! Studios comic) were promised at launch are missing.
It's a shame really...The game plays great, but is ruined by the fact that content is clearly missing and they expect us to dish out for it. Separate DLC character prices are 5.79 pounds...that's INSANE (and not in a good way). Had nWay not been as greedy and had they not rushed the game, it could've been an easy 8/10. But at this point, it's not.
I grabbed the CE and I'm gonna stick with it since a decent Power Rangers game is a tough thing to find these days (both 3DS Megaforce titles were below-average...Samurai on Wii and DS was pretty good, but that was Inti Creates). Hopefully, nWay will pick up the slack in terms of characters and stages and give us a robust roster like the one in Legacy Wars.
At this point, there's just not much to hold you over. Gameplay is great, yes, but the lack of stages and characters makes for a boring experience either way Here's hoping that the Season Pass will change that. There's still time for nWay to see the error of their ways and add more than the skins and 3 characters in the Season Pass.
@AlexSora89 Laughed out loud here
They really are cutting off their noses to spite their faces with this direction that fighting game are taking. They may make more money in the short term but this is gonna massively shrink these games audiences. I’m a huge SF fan but this kind of stuff just makes me not want to buy these games.
Wow, I'm surprised and impressed to see a reviewer actually taking price and microtransactions into account for their review. I hate it when EA games and the like get good reviews on account of the reviewers getting the content for free.
I've never been a fan of PR, even though I usually like the original japanese series that are adapted into PR in the US. Gokaiger was the last one I watched...
In spite of it, a good fighting game is always welcome, it doesn't matter if it's dragon ball, street fighter, dead or alive, rival schools.... But this kind of microtransactions is not for me. I prefer buying the game and receiving the full package. And if I have to pay for DLC, I'll pay for some substantial content. The price is obscene in this case...
@John_Deacon
That would have been one heck of a headline, although maybe it wasn't quite comedy Goldar.
it's a hard pass. the lack of stages and characters made me wanna wait for a price drop. they really should have delay the game to do more than what it is now.
The quality of a game should be scored separately from its price/value.
It's a meh game, I rather just play the older Super NES and Sega Genesis Power Rangers games instead. These newer had none of the magic or fun like the older ones.
"Where are the Rangers from the 2017 film reboot?"
Please keep those abominations far, far away from this game.
As a Power Rangers fan im disappointed at the lack of content. There needs to be better voice overs (that sound similar to the actual Rangers) and music. Gameplay wise, difficulty levels and match making based on actual skill would be nice. I have a hardcore love for Power Rangers but I dont plan to play this game like a hardcore, tournament fighter. In regards to DLC, additional Rangers should be .99 cents a pop, giving nWay the ability to package teams or certain types of Rangers for more. I've seen the crazy amount some YouTubers have paid for the mobile game and quite frankly, I refuse to spend more than 60 on this game, especially after I just paid for the base game. Right now. If you buy this game, you're buying it with faith in the developer's promise to improve the game. I would love to see an updated review of this game six months down the line.
So it sounds like it's a great game besides the dlc model? I hope this is taken into account in the Mortal Kombat review. Not being a smartass just pointing out that this definitely isn't the first fighting game to go down this road. SF V, Injustice 2, Mortal Kombat 10 (can't remember about 9 got the komplete edition for cheap), Blaze Blue Tag Battle, and of course DOA. I'm sure if you wanted to get every character and outfit and got it at the free to play base model it would end up costing about $500 bucks maybe more. No joke.
Even Smash but that has HUGE cast to begin with so I can forgive that. Oh yes the Killer Instinct reboot as well.
Glad to hear that the game plays well, I’ll be picking it up eventually. I hope they add in the rangers from the 2017 movie as DLC.
Im still shocked the Beast Morphers team is not in this game. The new season of the show just started. The toys are finally on shelves and yet this game doesn't have the current Rangers? Da fuq?! The current team should just be free DLC and The 2017 move team should also be added ASAP.
@holygeez03 I see what you mean but I disagree. It’s part of its package and longevity. If a platform game has only 4 levels it would get marked down for being too short so it’s kinda the same with a fighter. Only 5 stages and 9 fighters could get boring pretty quickly so should impact the score. This is only my opinion though
Its a shame. It sounds like a solid game from a gameplay standpoint. But why do i get the impression that 'boycotting' will only lead to the publisher blaming a lack of interest in the IP rather than the content or dlc model itself?
That does seem to be the ruthless mentality at times. 'If people arent taking the bait, then its not the fault of the system, but the fault of the game or IP itself for not generating enough for people to take the bait or be hooked in spite of it'.
Being able to vote or send a message with ones wallet is nice in theory, yet given the fact that this sort of system with dlc content can and does unfortunately pay off in other instances, they'll simply spend more time looking for a different cash cow or finding other ways to exploit the system to maximise their profits. Everyone is beginning to jump on board as they've finally found a way to make even more money beyond the initial purchase and in trying to artificially increase longetivity with 'post release support' (likely content simply witheld for that exact purpose)
I’ll admit, first thing I thought about was the review for NBA2K19 as honestly, I found the microtransaction system in that far more agregious than what was described here. Nonetheless, when I saw what the Collector’s Edition offered over the standard I had to double take. I’m sure more characters are likely to come but this is just ridiculous. They could have easily have had a roster of 30-40 charas and charged £40 up front for the standard version. Even a few palette swaps would have worked. I mean compare it to SSMBU and it’s 70+ roster. I know DLC charas are planned but their unique extras and are released well after launch not on the very next day!
Bringing this kind of greed into the core of a game is a great way to get horrible reviews and kill your game. Such garbage. It's a shame too because it sounds like the programmers and gameplay designers did such a good job...
Arms and Smash Bros are great fighting games, and part of it is the generosity. There's so many fighters, modes, etc.
I thought the story mode was supposed to be a big deal? Where is it?
The mobile game suffers from a similar problem. Their choices on which characters from the franchise to include are just weird. For a franchise like this, a fan would want to collect all the Rangers through the show's history. I know that's unrealistic since developing that many playable characters in a fighting game takes a ton of work. But still, it's just a very odd feeling as a Power Rangers fan to only have a random handful of characters to choose from
@60frames-please Smash, yes. ARMS is a joke with next to no content and should be half the price compared to the competition
@Mando44646 Yeah, Smash is loaded compare to almost any other game. I like Arms though and have had fun playing it the past couple years. It might not have tons of fighters, but they're all very different and fun to play with.
@holygeez03 This isn't just about price though. It's about the game having barely any content. You can't rate it for what might come in DLC packs. A game rating isn't just on whether the core engine plays well.
@holygeez03 Don't get me wrong though, I'd love to see a return to the days of game magazine reviews that gave scores for Gameplay, Graphics, Sound, Lastability, Value etc.
looks at Gundam Versus on PS4 and it's $150+ worth of DLC playable mobile suits
Nope. Still the king of bull DLC.
The season pass. The perpetual double dip.
It's existence immediately cheapens the core experience because you don't get the full product with your initial purchase and you constantly have to be reminded of paying more to keep up. Constantly reminded that the product you already paid for needs more money to get the whole game.
I wonder though, if this no name mobile studio is going to get blasted for incomplete game releases and season pass grubbing, shouldn't everyone be held to the same standards?
Nintendo has season pass content in 80 dollar games as do many other "beloved" and "reputable" publishers. They seem to get a free pass though. I dont recall Smash bros or pokken tournament getting blasted for season passes.
@Itzdmo Smash came with 74 characters and 103 stages! That's hardly an "Incomplete game release" just because they will continue to develop more content down the line.
Just like most all fighting games, I'll hope for an ultimate edition. This one probably not getting special treatment like that though...
looks like a crappy ps2 game and they want to sell you dlc
@Mach_Rider well said! This is how the review should have been written!
No way I'm supporting terrible business models such as this, how hard is it to just make a game and release it? Seriously they must know more people would buy it in the first place if it was full of content. Imagine an Injustice 2 style Power Rangers game, that'd sell 100 times more copies than trash like this
Season pass is the cancer of the video game industry.
I hope the players will vote against it with their purse - which is kind of the only way to get rid of it for good.
Then maybe, someday, we will get full games for a full price again.
well, I got the base game at $20...its decent...plus my younger kids love it so I suppose not a total loss.
@GameOtaku You got that right bud! I hate season passes so much! I am quite sick of them. Wish we could go back to the old days where $40 to $60 base market price got you a full and complete game. Season passes that are available on release date are a joke. Also passes that cost more than the game or close to the game infuriate me.
@construx True bud. I hope so too.
@BionicDodo I totally agree!
@Itzdmo The season pass for Smash is way better than this. It is being developed now.
@Itzdmo The season pass for Pokken was a joke for sure! I agree on that bud.
@HikaruKitsune Now that is terrible and an absolute joke!
@ALinkttPresent Well of course not all but at least 50.
@DarkScythe13 1000 percent agree!
@LightyKD Dumb move by them. They should have had those included from the get go.
Really wish we had just gotten Mega Battle.
I'd like to maybe they add some new content on top of the DLC stuff just so we have more than 9 fighters and only 3 more added with the Season Pass (Seriously, thats not on for a 3 on 3 fighting game. You're gonna have the samey teams to face over and over again.). This should have launch with 20 characters minimum even if you had some clone fighters (I'm sure there's a million sword and gun Rangers that would play the same.)
But nope, we got a limited missed opportunity. Maybe they can turn things around with a physical "complete" edition later down the line but as for now, I'll wait for a sale.
@JediKadabra I found that game very boring. There's a reason its on discount at £3-ish quite often.
I think the pricing's not too bad, $20 to start, and it looks like $15 for season1 (+3 chars, per Nintendo eshop) and prob the same for season 2 ($15 for 3 more chars, as some saw a roster of 15 char slots). So total that's about $50.
I do think it could use more villian monster baddie representation, but assumably they'll be in the DLC. Since most fighters release at $40-60, breaking it up this way is a decent way to allow people to try it for a reasonable starting price. Yeah, it could use more characters and content, but it's a new fighter game also and not from a pre-existing fighting game series / coming from devs with a fighting game series history.
@DeltaPeng i agree. I paid $50CAD for the bundle. While it is light on content, its enough to justify $50. I willingly pay $7 CAD for a specialty coffee four to five times a week, so $50 in the grand scheme of things is no big deal
@iescalie1 I'm glad we agree. Hasbro is currently in a marketing blitz with Power Rangers Beast Morphers. What better way to sell the new game to a bunch of kids then to let them play as the shiny new team of Rangers in the new game?! I was originally going to buy three copies of this game but at this point I can barely justify the first copy I got this week. nWay has a lot of work to do.
@JediKadabra I really want to play that game!
Not a fan of PR's at all, but 9 characters is an absolute joke. Damn season passes!
What was EVER promising about this?
Holy crud I just actually looked at the 9 characters and it's worse than I thought. 3 of them aren't even from the show. I know everyone likes the comics and they should be represented, but when you only have 9 characters maybe you don't have 3 from the comics. Also there's not even a Blue Ranger, or a Ranger from the show more recent than 2014.
No Blue Mighty Morphin Ranger = no buy
When I first heard about this game and saw its $20 prove point, i was thinking day one purchase. Glad I checked a couple reviews before buying. 9 characters is ridiculous. I’ll grab it on sale, since it’s seems inevitable
The game review reads like an 9 out of 10, but gets docked because they're selling a "standard edition" yet scores a 6. I mean, if the game plays well, then it plays well. I guess, imo, it just feels like the hit to the score over seems a bit excessive. But, I suppose your mileage may vary.
@LightyKD Me too buddy! I wanted to purchase the game, but this is just a downright awful practice! I cannot justify $40 for a game with no story mode and with only nine characters it seems. The gameplay and graphics are nice though. Just a disappointment. I was a real big fan of PR, especially of the original movie and Dino Thunder and SPD.
@Angelic_Lapras_King Totally agree! A missed opportunity to capitalize on the PR property properly and with total care.
@jly1987 the fight engine is solid and Justin Wong helped with the development of this game. Also the game can be nearly endless with over 100 Rangers in 25 years plus villains. If nWay was smart, they would work their ass off to get every major character in the game. Again, this game does have promise but the developer needs to add more.
It’s a $20 title. You get more if you pay more. Don’t poke too much fun at it. Other fighters on the Switch want more money just for nastalgia reasons. No thanks!
Kinda pitty that they didn't even bother to put the names on the fighting stage just like Marvel vs Capcom 2. It feels like arcade fighting game but unfinished. Such a pitty. They could've done a bit more.
A lot of comments complaining about the review lowering the score for the DLC..
The issue isn’t that there is DLC, it’s that the game has such LITTLE content in the base version that DLC is basically essential.
I like how most of these people are just like "6/10, DLC, Game Bad."
@Itzdmo didn't know Nintendo made 80 dollar games
Yet another popular IP, undone by greed.
Was gonna support since the former phone developers was branching out to consoles but now I'm not sure...
@LaytonPuzzle27 @Ryu_Niiyama What about Kamen Rider fans like me?
all jokes aside the game is great but it does hold a sheer lack of content in comparison to other fighters. That's why it is holding such a bad grade. That and the DLC Season issue.
Better off importing the English east Asia Kamen Rider fighter instead. $50 and you actually get a full game. Shocking I know.
The fact this only has 9 fighters makes it technically worse than the Genesis game and the Fighting Edition on SNES. Completely pathetic.
@Reigestugatensho kamen rider still has good games. Granted it is an arena fighter but still. The last good super sentai game was on wii and that was a musou game. I know there are mobile games as ninninger got one but do kids not play consoles? The new lupinranger Switch game is so not my cup of tea. So all I can do is hope that Super Sentai tries again. They have such a rich history after all.
@iescalie1 Full and complete games you say? You mean like
Street Fighter II World Warrior
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Fighting
Super Street Fighter II
Super Street Fighter II Turbo
The lack of content is really disappointed. After giving buying season passes a try in DBFZ, SF5, and Tekken 7, I can say that I am offically done with that system. @AlexSora89 Logged in just to applaud you. I lost it.
I was just looking to get this, but I've realised the collector's edition costs £5 more than the game+season pass, I can't work out what that is for? Just some skins? Seems ridiculous, they should just be a bonus for buying both at the same time
@Noboty
All I did was retooling the overused "Teen Titans No" joke for it to fit the occasion, that's all. But I like to make other users laugh, so I'm glad I achieved whatever I was going for.
I love the look of this ... but the price for the content really puts me off. Even at the 40% off it currently is at.
⚡I have all three versions of this Game; The Standard Edition, the Collector's Edition and the Limited Run Edition with the Morpher Steelbook etc.
Ultimate edition in a deep discount only then
