After ongoing rumours and even some leaks, Square Enix has officially revived its tactical RPG Final Fantasy Tactics for modern platforms.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will be coming to the Switch and Switch 2 on 30th September 2025. This new release offers two different versions of the original game – an enhanced version and a classic version.
The enhanced version adds "fully voiced dialogue", optimised and updated UI, graphical improvements and multiple quality-of-life features. This also includes the "more accessible 'Squire' difficulty setting", which makes this version an easier entry point for first-time players.

As for the classic version, this is the original graphics and gameplay of the 1997 PlayStation release, along with the "renowned War of the Lions translation". While it does stay true to the original in "almost every aspect" there are some other handy features like auto save.
If you're not familiar with the original release, you can read more about the game's story, combat, character growth and customisation over on the PlayStation Blog.
Excited about this upcoming release? Let us know in the comments.

I will choose the PS5 version since the game was originally from PS1 and I don't think Switch 2 version will have proper game card.
I already smelled game key card choice from SquareEnix behavior recently.
Well, they can screw up their fans with whatever their decisions.
It's happening!!
Never played it before, will happily try it out on Switch 2!
As glad as I am to see FFT on modern consoles, I'm a little disappointed that FFT Advance and A2: Grimore of the Rift didn't also get remastered and bundled with it.
I played the original, so I’m excited about this. I’ll be getting it for PS5
@GreenXIII though you can play these for free on your phone. The GBA deffo holds up.
Nice to finally see FFT multi platform after being stuck on Sony systems for so long. Will be getting this on Switch 2
My wish had come true. Thank you Square Enix. Now all we need left is Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, Chrono Trigger, Threads of Fate, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve 1 & 2, Ehrgeiz, Tobal 1 & 2, and Einhander.
I'll probably pick up the Switch 1 version, so I can have the game complete on cartridge. I don't see much benefit the extra power of the Switch 2 would do for a game like this, beyond faster loading.
@HexagonSun I mean, you would get the same benefits playing the Switch 1 cartridge on a Switch 2.
@HexagonSun Inb4 digital only in western territories (not that that would stop me).
@HexagonSun It's still possible the game doesn't come in the cartridge in Switch 1. People can always cheap out in cartridges and put the rest of the game as a mandatory update.
Excited to pick this up day 1 on Switch 1.
@Serpenterror You are awesome for including Einhander in your listing, and I 1000% agree!
Easy purchase. Switch 1 if all on the cart, no biggie.
Ill definitely buy this for nostalgia reasons, but I feel like they could have done just a bit more here. Maybe they could have made new sprites and gave it a visual overhaul with the option to toggle back and forth with the original graphics…
og switch for me it is
This just made my day! I will be buying this no questions asked...even if it's on a game key card.
@FX29 FF Tactics Advance was a Game Boy Advance exclusive. It was awesome too!
My biggest ask is finally coming to modern platforms.
Will buy. Best srpg to me, still, after all these years.
Day 0 purchase. This is still my favorite Final Fantasy
@Anti-Matter - That’s bold of you to assume Square Enix won’t do something similar to the PS5 release. Even a Day 1 update is essentially the same thing because the game that is shipped hasn’t been fully tested
Well hey, looks like I FINALLY get a shot at playing a Final Fantasy Tactics title! And a remaster of what's supposedly the best one, if my internet searches are correct.
@Slapshot Yeap, Einhander is also my favorite shmup on PS1, I would never forget that game. It is a part of my childhood.
@Olmectron This is true, but a lot of Square Enix switch games are complete on cartridge. One can hope.
Very keen for this! FF tactics has been on my to-play list ever since I got into Fire Emblem a few years ago, but I haven't gotten around to it as there wasn't a convenient way for me to play it.
Woooooo! Sunk so many hours into this on PS1. Found the entire game to be fascinating. Can’t wait!
YES finally!! Such a good day for gaming to finally see this confirmed with a release date! Day 1 on Switch 2, hopefully they follow this up with a FFTAdvance and A2 collection. The fact that Creative Unit 3 is working on this makes me hopeful that Square Enix is betting we want a full-fledged sequel!
I haven't played this game in years and really like it. It's brutally tough though and requires some serious thinking and patience. I know it's a long shot but I want Square to remake Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring. That game was so fun and really unexpected from Squaresoft at that time. I absolutely loved it
Yes! Its a classic, and one of my all-time favorites!
I'll buy it again.
To add: It was Sakimoto's score during the original PS1 commercials for this game that caught my attention. Been a fan of SRPGs and Sakimoto ever since.
Another Game-Key Card, I’m sure. I’ll pick it up digitally when it hits 50% off in a few years.
@Serpenterror
Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, Chrono Trigger, Threads of Fate, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve 1 & 2, Ehrgeiz, Tobal 1 & 2, and Einhander.
these are exactly the games i still miss from my childhood. i feel like almost everyone has done a better job than square in this regard (and that isn't saying a ton.) ✌️
edit - oh, add bushido blade to the list 😆
The classic looks better than the enhanced.
Yeah I would have jumped at this if I hadn't gotten sick of waiting & loaded up my Vita with this and Square's classic PSX library. And it's definitely not the classic version if it only comes as War of the Lions. No thanks to a bunch of bootstrapped Ivalice alliance stuff and overcooked dialog.
Translations are one thing, but do at least the new classes (if not crossover characters) from WotL come back? Overdue as it can feel to see this classic return and join all the other FFs, ahem, finally hitting Nintendo consoles (Gran Pulse saga next, right?[/padmeface]), here I am, looking the gift horse in the mouth with a pinch of concern for another Persona 3 Reload situation.😅
Yes!!!
And this is how you do voice acting. Voices that feel like they belong in the setting, with a script that feels like it belongs. None of this '90s Hollywood cool kids nonsense so many JRPGs are cursed with.
I'm glad there's an easier option included. I love the story, but I've outgrown the gameplay a little, I'm afraid.
Hype levels through the roof!!
Finally get to play the one game missing from the gold Final Fantasy era!! 🤎🤎🤎
@The_Nintend_Pedant Oh yeah Bushido Blade 1 & 2. Kinda forgot about those, I always thought those were Koei titles since they look so similar to the Dynasty Warriors games. Guess I was wrong about those.
Doesn’t seem like they’re doing much to it. Which is fine.
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!1
Woo.
I am very excited.
I remember playing FF Tactics Advance on my GBA when I was a kid. It was fun but also really tough, and I never managed to finish it, even with the Nintendo Power strategy guide.
FFTA for me is the single best Turn Based Tactical game on any Nintendo system. Never thought this will happen because of Advance Wars sitting fat in the same corner.
This is very good news indeed! I was waiting so long for this!!!
Another cheap ass remaster from Square Enix, with little effort but AI blurring upscaling that they'll sell for 70€
I'm happy. One of my most wanted games to be remastered for Switch 1&2.
Played through the original and loved it. For some reason not interested in replaying it still, after all these years. Weird. A remake would likely have had me come running though! Either way, many people are in for a treat.
They included the old version with pixelized graphics and the new one. It seem like Square Enix is listening, this is fantastic! Can't wait for the game!
@GreenXIII That's what I thought when they didn't include Tomb Raider 4 in that first collection We just have to buy this one and the rest will follow.
They shouldnt use briana white as voice again .. it ruin my mode to play, when i saw her name
I get the disappointment of it being little more than a slightly enhanced port, but FF Tactics on modern hardware without having to resort to emulation gets a huge thumbs up from me.
A dream come true, going to double-dip on this one, Steam + Switch.
While I was slightly disappointed with Tactics Ogre I will be giving this one a try too
Amazing news, this is a game I've been wanting to pay for a while and it's a great idea to include the original version alongside the remaster, I hope they'll do the same if they remaster/remake Chrono Trigger!
Easy purchase if it's an actual physical release with everything on the cartridge.
Gonna get this for sure, I love FF Tactics!
i preordered it from Square Enix's UK store site. Interestingly, they only had PS5 and Switch as available options, I didn't see a Switch 2 game key card version available yet.
https://gb.store.square-enix-games.com/final-fantasy-tactics---the-ivalice-chronicles
Even though it looks like the remaster was made by an AI, I'll be getting this sooner or later! Same as Tactics Ogre. I've never played these games, and I think it's time to do so.
@Serpenterror
looks aside, they were excellent and unique fighting games! Especially the first one.
and they DEFINITELY didnt play anything like dynasty warriors! 😅✌️
@GreenXIII Right? When I saw the new title, I thought maybe it was a compilation. Maybe Advance will end up on NSO.
Absolutely love to hear it and even more so since it includes the classic version as well, always cool when that happens - so looking forward to finally playing this myself now that it's coming also to Switch 1 and 2 (wonder if there will also be an upgrade or they'll be completely separate releases)!
@Kazman2007 Still commenting even though you've got nothing to say, I see. Why you've yet to learn your lesson, I'll never know. You really are too hardheaded for your own good.
@JohnnyMind I couldn't agree with you more. I got the Switch 2 about an hour ago, and Mario Kart World turned out to be more exhilarating than I expected. The price aside, I do believe I made the right choice. And I didn't even have to want in a horrifyingly long line for it, either.
@Pillowpants It's a classic, let me tell you.
@Zufolobelisk So glad to hear that you've already got your Switch 2 and you're enjoying World even more than you expected!
@JohnnyMind Thank you very much. Life has its ups and downs, but I'm glad that videogames will always be one of those "ups"... though they can sometimes be "downs" when you get to a tough boss or a hard puzzle and such. Regardless, this is only the beginning of my time with the Nintendo Switch 2, and I hope to enjoy it all the way to the announcement of the next big console.
Its not Tactics Advance, but I'll take it.
Switch 1and PS5 for me because Switch 2 will most likely have game card key nonsense.
I've been saying it and I'll say it again: if you're going to update/reimagine an old game...include the untouched old game in the package!
Then, even if the newer/changed version of the game is not well-received, people (like me) will still buy it to have the original.
It seems so obvious, and I'm glad it is happening here.
Tactics advance and advance 2 when
Those had superior art direction
@Anti-Matter i would never buy a tactical RPG on ps5 these games are basically made for handheld these days, I wouldnt want ps5 copy for free tbh
@yoshi420
Well, I have PS5 machine so I can quickly choose PS5 version as possible.
Also, I grew up by PS1 version of FF Tactics and the last time I played FF Tactics was 20 years ago.
Btw, I can also find again the PS1 version to experience again with the original version.
I have PS2 machine so I can always add more PS1 games for my PS2 machine.
I could choose between ps5/ns too - what I mean is playing games, that demand some time, is way more comfy when handhelded which wasnt an option back then, obviously.
I played A LOT tactical rpgs on switch and its basicly my tactical rpg machine. Rn Unicorn Overlord (can't imagine playin it stuck on TV non stop, I played on TV like 5-6 times tops). And FFT is such a gam, Im so happy. Not being smartass just trying give good advice. HH>TV sentiment or not (I also played classic fft on psx later gba I guess and never played such games on standard consols)
@Serpenterror It's indeed incredible! I remember there was a full level demo on one of the PlayStation Magazine discs, and we probably played through that like fifty times.
Very happy this is finally here !!!! Am I the only one disappointed with the collectors edition ? Just seems like a lot useless tat , I would have loved something like an illustrated art book or strategy guide
