Kit and Krysta, the former hosts of Nintendo Minute, left Nintendo at the start of 2022 after a combined 25 years at the company. This gave them a ton of insight into the secretive company that they're now more than happy to share on their YouTube channel and podcast, including speculation based on their experience — which is what we have today.
In a 40-second video, Kit Ellis says that he doesn't believe the story about Nintendo having a "weak second half schedule of games" for 2023, as reported on by VGC through a publishing source "with knowledge of Nintendo's plans".
Ellis' theory is that Nintendo, as one of the most secretive companies in the world, wouldn't be "telling the [Entertainment Software Association] or literally anybody that they have a weak schedule of games," stating that he doesn't "believe" that to be the case. Instead, he says, "maybe there's another reason that Nintendo's skipping E3," and that we "might be finding it out sooner than later."
Not much to go on, other than the educated guess of a former Nintendo employee, but if the ever-swirling Direct rumours turn out to be true, well... we might be getting some surprise releases in the latter half of 2023.
What games would you like to see coming this year to Switch? Or would you rather have a new Switch entirely? Tell us in the comments!
I don't know, it sounds a lot less of a foreshadowing and much more of a simple educated guess
It's probably because, for whatever reason, they think having major Directs in Spring and Fall is sufficient. They don't seem to like having major gaming news to show in the Summer, we've seen that in 2 of the last 3 years that they're perfectly content to stay silent during E3 time.
They're only in the know while they're working at Nintendo, once they're out of the company they won't be able to share any inside info even if they still have contacts inside the company willing to share it.
If you take the E from E3 and rotate it 90° clockwise, you get an M.
Isn’t the rumour that none of the big 3 will have any showing this year? So either something has gone down that turned them all away (though Sony hasn’t bothered with E3 even since before covid iirc) or they’ve concluded over the last few years with no E3 that they do just fine without it.
Definitely sad if this is the death knell for it, it’s always been a fun thing to look forward to. E3 2006 when they properly revealed the Wii was probably the most exciting time to be a video game fan, it was nuts
There most likely just gonna have a Nintendo direct dropped every few months, Sony and Microsoft seem to be going the same route if they are skipping E3.
I doubt there's some grand conspiracy about it. E3's basically just completely past having any real purpose with everyone just doing their own presentations on Youtube any time they want to anyway.
They don’t work for Nintendo anymore. Why are we counting them as news? They’ve been wrong far too often. Also, Nintendo isn’t the only one skipping E3, Sony and Microsoft opted out too. Think the message is clear: E3 is not viable for an appearance.
Honestly, the most likely scenario here is that E3 is expensive, and Nintendo, along with Sony and Microsoft, realized they can do what they do at E3 on their own time and spend a butt ton less money.
Tried it and got a W, idk
Obviously it's because they'll have their own event dedicated to unveil the long awaited and much anticipated Nintendo NX
Nintendo is skipping E3 because they can.
E3: Nintendo please come to us
Nintendo: i cant do this sorry
E3: please repear this 10.000 times
6 month later
Nintendo do a similar presenation for the Nintendo Switch reveal and anounce the Nintendo Switch sucessor
E3: i see, that why she avoided me.
Tin foil hat time… Nintendo will be hosting their own Nintencon in Wahoo, Nebraska that is to be focused on first party titles that will be released exclusively on the NES. The apex of which will be the giant wooden statue of Reggie that they set ablaze to celebrate the closing ceremony while drones form the image of Miyamoto in the sky.
Nintendo can skip E3 because it isn't the same anymore. As the other two big companies eventually found out, that's what happens when you've done an online presentation for over a decade. Unless this next Direct is big and gives detailed announcements for the rest of the year, I just don't want another Nintendo summer of silence.
It means they’re bringing back Spaceworld, baaaaaybee!
Nintendo no longer benefits from an E3 presence. It's that simple.
They can do Directs any time they wish, without competing for attention and eyeballs from a bunch of other major publishers at the same time.
They don't have to pay the enormous expense of going to E3 when everyone just watches the Direct anyway.
E3 used to be an important tool for marketing and negotiating with suppliers, vendors, and distributors. It no longer serves any of those purposes.
Don't read into Nintendo's absence from E3. It means nothing.
These two have no insider information, so why bring them up. Also E3 been pointless for last few years.
TRUST ME I KNOW STUFF, NOTICE ME PLEASE SUBSCRIBE!
This is speculative information based on what Kit and Krysta saw days before they officially left Nintendo. It's just a pattern of what goes around throughout Nintendo, and how very obviously the secrecy runs through Nintendo, with very very few people in NoA knowing about upcoming releases.
Kit Ellis: Please go away now.
Just like Reggie. Left, but still acting like they are at Nintendo (but they are better than Reggie)
Switch successor announcement incoming
that's it, nintendo is closing up shop confirmed. we all knew it was coming
"Nintendo no longer benefits from an E3 presence. It's that
"-- everyone just watches the Direct anyway."
"E3 used to be an important tool for marketing and negotiating with suppliers, vendors, and distributors. It no longer serves any of those purposes."
It's interesting how many people underestimate the potential impact and importance of E3 simply because it's had its ups and downs. In truth, it remains one of the most significant gaming events even throughout its lows, because it's the most important event known to bring the industry together under one roof. At this event, voices are louder because presentations aren't exclusive, in other words, there's more potential for each company to grow because the whole nation of gamers and investors will be listening, versus a group of dedicated fans who would seek and watch a Direct. People must remember that Directs are supposed to be no more than an extension of E3 that is dedicated to the most eager of fans. Nintendo, for example, created Directs to reach their fanbase without distractions, but so far, has remained present at E3, in some capacity, to reach more investors and support growth.
I take the current rumors about the big 3 with a grain of salt because I understand that it would be unhealthy for these companies to skip an event that gamers and investors across the board will likely be aware of.
So this guy share some cryptic message about something he may or may not know but refuse to share anything else? Hahaha, coming from a guy who use to earn his living in marketing this seems pretty weak to me
@Bolt_Strike everyone is going their own way to have their products shine without any other competition around it that day. As for Nintendo their year starts in March so I would expect something later this month or early March.
@CircuitWrangler3 these companies are not going to present at E3 because it costs money and they can get the spotlight if they hold their own events. It is that simple. Competition is out of the way so we can shine. With the internet everywhere now E3 may be relevant for pc but not for console.
What are the rumors surrounding this direct?
Life has been really hectic so I’d really appreciate a recap.
@progx to be fair they know about games that were in development when they left that still havent been released
I am not sure I believe either of the rumors. As others have mentioned, all three console companies are skipping.
It is just not cost effective anymore. I know that these companies can afford to go, but why waste the resources when you can control your own narrative.
I really don't like these leaks forecasting such a negative outlook for Nintendo's games & news. Just shut up and wait until something is officially announced
My guess is nintendo is taking an all eyes on zelda approach until the game is out than the big rest of 2023 games will be announced
Lol, nintendolife just got click baited by a couple of YouTubers!!!
@DdG1408 Competition is good for us, the consumers, it helps with quality control. And, the moment a company stops competing is when a door opens for a potential competitor to get ahead; in fact, Nintendo knows that more than anyone, hence why the Switch was designed to be less gimmicky than the Wiiu and a better platform for third-party developers. Nintendo learned a lesson about relying too heavily on their own software assets when it came to the Wiiu; it was more expensive than its predecessor, the Wii, yet it had significantly less third-party support, and in the end, sold barely over a tenth of what the Wii sold. In the meantime, Sony and Microsoft were going at each others throats, which, due to a lack of standout innovation, led to an annoying war over exclusives, but their highly competitive approach to the market garnered them robust third-party support, allowing their consoles to sell in much healthier numbers. also meanwhile, Nintendo was becoming the company of yesteryear.
Yes, Nintendo seems to be the only company of the big three that's capable of carving out its own market, and that's a plus, however, it can only expect limited success without competing for some form of market share, like third-party support for example. Showing up at e3 can be a good way to let Playstation and Xbox fans know that there is a second option. After all, it is an E3 tradition for gamers to watch all of the big three's presentations and grade them.
@dew12333 We've been baited, NL are the trappers.
Did you know that Kit spelled backwards is “Tik?” And that Nintendo spelled backwards is “Odnetnin?” And that Coocamonga spelled sideways is “Who cares?”
Summer of Pikmin, a similar strategy used to the Splatoon strategy in Summer 2015 applied to Pikmin 4 to try and make it a big hit. Pikmin 4 was announced in 2015 after all.
I mean, it's very possible that these guys still have friends at Treehouse and hear things. Nintendo is secretive but the games have to be localized.
Although I still think Tears of the Kingdom is the Switch's swan song.. if a Switch successor is coming even in the next couple years, Nintendo's teams should be working on games for that by now.
Not sure either way, but I do think Nintendo has some good surprise games they haven't announced to us yet, for this year. I know there is Zelda and Pikmin already, and in a way Kirby soon, but yeah I expect some sort of other surprise.
Who would have guessed that 6 years into a console's life, a company is probably going to announce a new console soon?
Not sure how I feel about them having a YouTube channel about Nintendo. On the one hand, it makes sense to continue presenting on YT about a topic you like. On the other hand I'm thinking who in the games industry is going to hire someone that will talk about you afterwards.
Either way, going from video content producer as a Nintendo employee to creating rumour videos about Nintendo is quite a fall from grace and, not to antagonise as I know these videos have a place, but pretty lame.
But hey, what do I know? I mean they could go and write a book about their time at Nintendo and whilst that's perhaps more admirable, it doesn't capitalise on their expertise and is potentially flash in the pan too.
In any case, I believe they know nothing. So it's a prediction video about Nintendo with no more merit than the other 58,452* Nintendo predictions videos that released last week.
@Classic603 Wario World 2 confirmed! less go!
Really at this point im just hoping for the announcement that a switch 2 or more powerful switch will exist, even if its a year or so away, mainly just to see if nintendo keep up the whole "hybrid" idea and the amount of choice the switch has in how you play it.
If they ended up going back to a more restrictive system like wii, or to the lesser extent the wiiu or a handheld with no TV output like ds/3ds then i will likely just end up getting a steam deck.
I love the idea of the switch though the hardware is definitely showing its limitations more than ever, and while as mentioned in a prior article that more powerful hardware wont stop bad ports it would hopefully mean that having the power gap closed a bit would mean games are easier for devs to port.
not expecting some super powerful handheld but looking forward to see what can be done with newer mobile chips while keeping a similar form factor etc.
this is more hopes, rather than expectations, im mainly just hoping for a better idea of the kind of plans nintendo have going forward since im hoping for more of a ds>3ds kind of jump to the next system than a gamecube to wii or wii to wiiu jump
Do they need a reason? No. E3 was a necessary thing when conventions were relevant. They haven't been relevant in a decade and the pandemic just pushed the relevant needle even further to the non-relevant side. In person conventions are going to be a part of a Netflix YA horror series years from now. Like malls were to Stranger Things...
@Lizuka That is not remotely true.
No one outside the super hardcore watches "Directs"
I consider myself pretty hardcore, but I will not watch a prefilmed video to tell me why a game is cool. Obviously, if the game fails, chugs, or is boring in spots, they are just going to edit that out.
E3 got press in all the mainstream news shows/newspapers.
Basically, if Nintendo wonders why the Wii U failed, it was because of constantly doing filler E3 presentations.
@Dev9417 Part of the problem is gamers are suckers.
With the forced "renting" of old games, I plan to boycott the Switch successor in anger, but everyone else just makes excuses for Nintendo.
It should be EXPECTED they show up at E3.
A taped Youtube video is not even worthy of a news article.
If all the video game articles refused to cover taped Youtube videos we could make on our own, Nintendo would have to go to E3.
But gamers are suckers, so Nintendo gets away with it again.
@JJtheTexan "They don't have to pay the enormous expense of going to E3 when everyone just watches the Direct anyway."
If by everyone, you mean all the video game outlets, then sure.
If by everyone, you mean the entire population, no chance.
I remember around every E3, I would have to avoid Facebook for a week if I did not want to be spoiled by all the statuses from my marginal gamer friends posting about it.
I never saw a single status about a single Nintendo direct ever.
Nintendo will continue bleeding sales to its B/C list franchise games and casual games if they continue avoiding E3.
Nobody cares about their propaganda home movies videos.
@CircuitWrangler3 Another thing is the big 3 do NOT compete for attention at E3.
Their main conferences are all during their own time.
@DdG1408 Except the viewer numbers for E3 conferences were probably in the millions and I would be suprised if a Nintendo Direct gets 10,000 views.
@Pigeon Are you kidding? That thing was never even real in the first place.
It was just a phony topic designed to extort billions of dollars for the big pharmaceutical companies who already do no work in the first place.
Sorry you fell for it.
@fortius54 Because the types of people who would be tricked by controlling your own narrative won't watch the Directs.
The types of people who watch the Directs know Nintendo can selectively edit footage to not show chuggy framerates, a bad camera, horrendous graphics, etc.
So who exactly are they reaching?
@Mgalens lol seriously?
What exactly do you want in a Switch game that cannot be done because of "hardware limitations"
Are you one of those people who gives Mario games a 6 because you cannot see water running off Mario as he gets out of a water level?
@tseliot With your logic, sporting events would have 0 fans because you could just watch it on television cheaper, but even the worst sports teams still draw 10,000 fans a night.
By the way, the virus was never real. It was just a phony topic designed to extort billions of dollars for the big pharmaceutical companies who already do no work in the first place.
Sorry you fell for it.
@SportyMarioSonicMix actually the last e3 with Nintendo Nintendo got only 3.1 million views. This last direct Nintendo had they got over 5.1 million views. If you take away Nintendo, don’t and Xbox viewship then e3 is nothing more than a pc showcase with about the same number of views as all the others.
Now there is nothing wrong with that at all but my point stands.
@DdG1408 But how do we know a Nintendo Direct got 5.1 million views?
Nintendo would have to report that number.
How do we know it did not get 51,000 views and Nintendo just lied?
Or, more likely, 5.0 of the 5.1 million views were from Japan, where Nintendo is way bigger and the US views were 100,000.
For E3, an independent person releases those numbers.
@CircuitWrangler3 @CircuitWrangler3 @CircuitWrangler3 first of all the switch is way more gimmicky than the WiiU. The WiiU sold horribly because of marketing reasons not because of gimmicks or competition.
As for competition none of them need E3 to compete at all in todays age which is why they are leaving it. They are seeing the same and even bigger numbers by holding their own showcases and they are able to have more of them as well. Nintendos directs alone gets almost 2x’s more views than they have gotten at e3. Competition is good but e3 doesn’t bring competition and the competition it does bring is startup companies which Nintendo even welcomes themselves but that’s a good thing. I never said e3 or competition was bad, I said the big three do not need e3
@SportyMarioSonicMix it’s on YouTube man, look it up. Last Nintendo direct on 9/13/2022 got 5.1 million views. That’s just the views on YouTube. I am sure Nintendo fixed their viewership numbers on YouTube.
Let me be clear. E3 is not a bad thing at all but the big 3 do not at all need e3 to reach people. E3 is more for start ups and pc in todays world.

@DdG1408 Yeah, but aren't those the kind of videos where if you did an infinite refresh, you could generate thousands of phony views in a single day with a single computer?
View is NOT unique people watching.
@SportyMarioSonicMix You are pushing it a bit with that comment and good luck with that not being removed. I like your comments on E3 value, since it is open for debate of how important (or not) it is today. You do make good points, but sadly it will be diluted with those generalization opinions that you make about boys and girls and their relationship to games. It reads not only as rude but also sexist and you should be aware of it.
I also do not fancy the style of this particular author, not in the slighest I relate to what she wrotes but it is extreme to make a point about women and gamers based on it. Its not about the sex/gender but a personal style. Case in point, I will recommend Alana Hughes (another female writer in this site) which style of writing I do enjoy a lot, but again... I think it is important to value people's work despite their gender and avoid jumping to those quick conclusions.

It feels like a lot of the time when someone mentions hardware limitations there are those that interpret it as someone wanting some high end modern visuals.
I would be happy with a next gen switch that could play newer multiplatform games or more demanding exclusives at a consistent 30fps and stable resolution without being cloud games.
As mentioned mobile chips have improved greatly since the switch launch, a newer system would still be able to be a big upgrade without needing to go the full portable-pc route like the steam deck or other similar devices.
The difference between the switch and wiiu is that a lot of the switch's "gimmicks" are optional, at its heart the switch isnt that much different from something like the pspgo, a handheld device which can output to TV (pspgo even had an optional dock or "cradle" as it was known as) only handled better.
with something like wii or to a lesser extent wiiu, players often had to play the game in a very specific way, wheres with switch the vast majority of games allow you to play them with a large variety of controllers, which is closer to how something like PC was handling things, and imo is the ideal way going forward since when it comes to things like controls or "how" you play games the best way is whatever the player feels comfortable with (and in the case of "adaptive" controllers can be the difference between some people being able to play the games at all)
I notice a few people saying, nothing much after Zelda that must mean a new console is coming. I mean that is no evidence as Nintendo always keeps there heart close to there chest when it comes to future game releases.
@Mgalens Isn't most of the games that won't run 30 FPS either the developer is too lazy to code it properly or they try to push too high end graphics that the frame rate is what suffers?
A 30 FPS game could be coded on Gamecube.
it can depend on what system the game is targeting among quite a lot of other variables, its why something like "graphics" cant really be quantified on its own.
in terms of system limitations vs issues with the game from what i gather Xenoblade 3 vs pokemon S/V seem like a good example, with Xenoblade 3 it felt like it was pushing the system to its limit with its large detailed environments which is why some areas have framerate or resolution drops wheres something like pokemon S/V feels more like an optimisation issue (also some of the worst performance i heared is caused by a data leak bug where you need to reset the game to fix it)
Its also similar to why people were confused why kingdom hearts 1 and 2 were cloud versions when something like Crisis core reunion is running natively.
as mentioned for me its less hoping that nintendos next system is some powerful device that matches the ps5/xsx but rather something which keeps the "hybrid" aspect.
in terms of framerate technically psone and n64 could do 60fps with certain games, for example klonoa on psone and F zero X on n64.
I just want some games
