Video games and sports have a lot of overlap, and we've spent a lot of time trying to recreate our favourite stunts and moves in various sports games, but NASCAR racer Ross Chastain has done the opposite — he recreated a move he used to perform in NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup on GameCube to secure the final qualifying spot for the championship.
Shared on Twitter by @barstoolsports and Steve Lin from the Video Game History Foundation, this risky manoeuvre is known as a 'wall ride' and involves literally driving right up against the wall to squeeze past the other cars.
Chastain does this in spectacular fashion, leaving it until the very last minute to secure that final qualifying spot for next weekend's 2022 NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4.
In the post-match interview (above), Chastain was asked "how did you ever dream up a scenario where something like that would be what you needed to do and then it would work?", where the racer credits the 2004 GameCube racer for the idea:
"Oh, I played a lot of NASCAR 2005 on the GameCube with Chad growing up and you can get away with it, and I never knew if it would actually work. I mean, I did that when I was eight years old and I grabbed fifth gear, I asked Alpha two on the last lap if we needed it and we did. I couldn't tell who was leading and I just made the choice; I grabbed fifth gear down the back and full committed.
Once I got against the wall I basically go to the wheel and just hope I didn't catch the turn floor access gate or something crazy, but I was willing to do it."
So, all of those times you've clipped past your friends in racing games by hugging the wall, and all of those times they've called you a cheat? Show them this. It's all skill and guts, and the fact someone has done it in the real sport itself is pretty amazing.
NASCAR 2005 was released on PS2, Xbox, and GameCube back in 2004, and across all three platforms, it received strong reviews for its production values, gameplay, and audio. It was even up for GameSpot's "Best Driving Game" award, but it lost out to a little game called Burnout 3: Takedown.
So, what's next? Banana peels on the race track? Have you ever tried to recreate anything from a video game in real life? Let us know below!

see I was thinking F-Zero GX snaking, but I guess one of the maps in that is just future nascar ostensibly
this is the first time i have ever been hyped for anything in NASCAR
gamecube squad RISE
I watched the race and Martinsville has always been among my favorite tracks. It was an amazing last-ditch move. Chastain had to pass a couple of cars to qualify but wasn't close enough to anyone, so this was his only option. To put it in perspective, he was 50+ mph faster than any other car when he did that and he passed five cars. The fact that he learned that from the Gamecube version of the NASCAR game made it even better. Gamecube was my system of choice back then. It will be a highlight video for the ages and was a great move, but I think they're going to have to add a rule to prevent it because then you're going to have races end with dozens of cars attempting the move at the same, which seems like a safety concern, and would also just be a bad look when everyone is doing it. But it was cool, and confusing at first, when it happened.
Forza horizon 6 looking very realistic 😂
I once tried to beat a fox to death with a skeleton arm, but I got a lot of funny looks.
That driving looks amazing and terrifying
My parents always told me that video games were a waste of time and couldn’t help with anything real life.
WELL WHOSE RIGHT NOW MUM AND DAD?!
Ahem. Excuse me.
I will now never let my children skip another day without playing video games.
Haha, cant wait to see future races, where now everyone does this at the last lap xD
Do videogames imitate life or does life imitate video games?
I was at the race, in turn 3 and it was the wildest thing I've ever seen. Absolutely love how he just went for it with everything on the line. We see the white flag wave, and all of a sudden here comes Ross and his Red/Black machine flying against the wall! Love how two things I adore, racing and video games meshed together into one.
@Benaffect nice 👍
@AlanaHagues "against the wall to squeeze past the other cards." Think you made a typo there.
Honestly, that's just so crazy! Guess it shows just how influential games can be on our lives.
Imagine being the guy who got second place. You get the knowledge of being beat by a tactic in a video game.
This is awesome.
@blindsquarel I think this guy actually came 5th, but it was still enough to qualify.
From comments I've read apparently he knocked his rival out of the competition with this move (they came 6th)
@Dizzard
Ah well, at least he knocked out his rival.
I had a Nascar GCN game too but I used to turn around and crash into the oncoming cars. Probably shouldn't see if that move works IRL.
If they tried in F-Zero, your machine would not only slow down, it will explode. Anyway, that was pretty cool and I don't even watch NASCAR
I've never tried to do anything like this in real life but I do remember playing Mario 64 for so long when it came out, when I next walked down the street felt I should be jumping like mario everywhere! hah
He should have tossed a blue shell to take out the leader.
The headline left me hoping for a blue shell with wings in the article, I left disappointed.

I love how Nintendo Life gets "GameCube" right, with the capital "C". Respect! This is the best Nintendo site anywhere on the net, hands down!
@tseliot
The "thought gestapo?" Pray tell, what NASCAR-related "thoughts" are you upset about not being allowed to share anymore? I'm sure they're nice and wholesome.
Classic wallriding. Indeed it's something that seems unrealistic in games, and that you'd likely spinout in real life. Amazing it worked.
I used to play NASCAR Thunder all the time on my Gamecube. To this day, easily the NASCAR game I played the most.
This is quite amazing that it worked, but also a testament to how good that GameCube game was
@datamonkey
GTA 3 came out right when I got my driver's license, and I seriously felt the urge to commit vehicular crimes! haha like it felt weird that I couldn't just drive up on the curb, or hop out of my car in traffic and take another car. I'm not even kidding!
your comment really spoke to me 👍
@tseliot
oh please 🙄 nobody wants to control your thoughts. not even NASCAR.
Real ones did it in Diddy Kong Racing
I don't watch NASCAR but that was such a NASCAR move. The cars can take a good beating so good on Melon Man for pulling it off to perfection. Now everyone's gonna try it though... that could really hurt the sport.
bro discovers smart steering
He basically broke the sport. This is now meta! /s
This is so cool! I love racing games but one thing that always drives me crazy about "serious" racing games is that they dont let you do this. Like the auteurs and experts are all like: no that's cheap arcade stuff, in real life you would be spinning around in circles the second you leave the optimal racing line, actually scraping the walls should essentially forfeit the race right then and there.
Now it's a proven valid tactic!
Pretty funny stuff.
I wonder if NASCAR will ban this sort of thing now that it's been proven successful. My guess is yes.
I would have thrown banana peels and dead turtle parts to take the lead, but I concede this is the better option.
@Luigi05 Squeezing past cards is certainly a lot easier than squeezing past cars😅 Zapped it! Thanks for spotting.
@sdelfin 70 mph faster. Amazing
First and last time you'll ever see Nintendolife cover Nascar
@dluxxx Thanks. I had heard it was clocked a bit faster than initially reported. I think I was going by the original reporting from just after it happened. Pretty crazy all around.
@sdelfin I mean 50 or 70 he was fast af
Oh, is that it? Tell me when someone actually drives on the wall like in "Herbie: Fully Loaded."
@theModestMouse Then again, you might just see more drivers taking the outside lane close enough to the wall to prevent anyone from passing them with that tactic.
It's certainly not the ideal racing lane, but if other drivers are hogging the inside half of the track beside you, you might as well make sure nobody passes you on the outside with a repeat of that stunt.
@dluxxx Actually, the review for the Wii U version of "Sega All-Star Racing Transformed" mentions a certain female NASCAR driver among its character roster.
I was expecting a winged blue turtle shell...
