Microids has revealed that New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja, a remake of the 1991 Super Nintendo classic, will be wheeling its way onto Switch this November.
A remake from the team behind Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All (Mr Nutz Studio), we'll be travelling back in time to join the two cavemen who are on a mission to rescue their wives who have been kidnapped by a rival group! The arcade, Amiga, and Mega Drive/Genesis versions of the game (plus a few other unusual ports) allowed you to choose between two different routes after boss battles, and certain versions of the game also allowed you to play two-player — the latter of which has been confirmed to be a part of this remake.
Here's a summary of what this blast from the past entails from Microids' press release:
When “Rock & Roll” was just rock and “fast food” a dinner running away from you, two cavemen named Joe & Mac were living quiet lives in their peaceful village. Peaceful until a bunch of Neanderthal primates ransack the village and kidnap all the women!
It’s time for our cavemen to go head to head against dangerous dinosaurs and other carnivorous plants to free their beloved wives! Don’t be fooled by these entirely reworked graphics, New Joe & Mac promises to be brutal and completely crazy!
Developed by Mr. Nutz Studio (Toki, Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All!) this new iteration of the cult arcade classic will invite players to discover a trustful remake and enriched with an Arcade Mode, offering a remaster of the original game, as well as a longer version of the story mode called Extended. Just like the original game developed for arcade play in the ’90s, New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja will offer a local two-player co-op mode. Additionally, the game will also contain a training mode, a boss rush mode and even a speedrun mode!
New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja will offer an incredibly fun and complete arcade experience!
Publisher Microids has also shared details on the T-Rex Edition, the physical release of the game. This nifty little collection comes with a handful of goodies to help you relive your arcade-playing days. Here's what it looks like, as well as what you'll be getting if you pick up this version:
- The game New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja
- 2 sticker sheets
- One trading card
- A 3D keychain
We don't have a concrete date yet for the Joe & Mac remake, however, we do know it should be here in November. Time travel takes a while, we hear.
Will you be picking up New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja? Let us know!

Not sure if i'm a huge fan of the direction they went. Looks pretty low quality random XBLA remake type. It was just a few tiny snippets though, so hopefully I'm wrong.
I like the look of this....and a physical too! Is it made by the same developers who did Toki? Loved that one!
Can't say I expected this.
I remember beating the original Joe & Mac on the SNES NSO service about a year ago at this point and it's probably the most average game I've ever played. Not bad, but not necessarily great either, just.....ok. A remake is nice though since it gives them the opportunity to touch it up and make it better which is always appreciated. It also gives them a way to explain what the **** that ending was about but that's neither here nor there.
Well, this isn't a remake announcement, I ever expected to hear.
I enjoyed the two games that were on the SNES, I might consider picking this one up, at some point.
classic, enjoyed this back in the 90s! Can someone now make a NES, SNES N64 and Gamecube Star Wars collection along the lines of TMNT Cowabunga Collection, please??
Joe & Mac are/were fine, but I really do feel like the industry has either hit a serious creativity block at this point, or has just grown to the point where there are far more coders than creative people. They've got past remaking the great games, then the good/important ones and now they're just remaking/remastering everything. And journalists describing everything old as being a 'classic' doesn't help!
Ngl, not a fan of the animation, I could tell how it was going to look just based off the art style alone, which is not good.
Not really a fan of the art direction. The pixel art of the old games had a certain charm to it, which is kind of lost here. The dinosaurs in the second one looked particularly great.
Looks like a disservice to the pixel art just like the Asterix remake. But then I like the way old games look 🤷♂️
Definitely keeping an eye on this.
I think I’m better off with the SNES games on the Switch online.
I like Joe and Mac. The caveman aesthetic works well when mixed with some 90’s ‘tude and I thought Joe and Mac Returns was fun, so I got some interest in this.
One of the reasons I love the Switch is the huge bestiary of games it’s racking up.
But does it need some of these? Joe & Mac? Really?
Okay fess up and be honest y'all... Who had this on their 2022 Bingo Card and manifested it into the universe???
I don't think the women were their wives, at least not in the original. I believe they were all the females of the cave village (and showing the sensitivity of 1991 game directors, one of them an obese woman who gets dragged by her hair in the cutscene)
In 2P mode, only the guy who did more damage to the boss got a health-restoring kiss from the rescued lady.
It is true that the SNES version was a specially redesigned version of the game, with much more of a platform emphasis, the others were more of a... single-plane beat-em-up, I think is the term.
Funny though that the PAL versions didn't suffer the "ninja" censorship. I guess being cavemen made them deemed not harmful to the children?
I enjoyed the original games, but this teaser leaves a lot to be desired in terms of gameplay - especially for a game coming out in a few months.
If this is what we'll get, it's a no. Go for the original instead.
If it’s not a remake of the SNES version specifically, pass.
Man, I really wish someone would tackle an Adventure Island remake! I know it doesn’t have anything to do with this game, but seeing this remake made me want that!
I'll stick to playing the Original on the SNES. When I read there's a remake I was excited but the styling is weird. They look like paper cutouts and the caveman don't even look the same. On a different note, there's so many remakes and remasters and yet we still don't have Hogs Of War!
@somnambulance At the very least it'd be great if they released Super Adventure Island on NSO. That game has one of the chillest soundtracks on the snes.
I've played a lot of the original, so I'm wondering if there's anything new here to attract me. If not it's still great for those who never played the game
Always enjoyed Joe and Mac. Would also love to see Hamster release it. Curious that there’s no Xbox version? 🤔
It's nice to see some hand drawn artwork instead of the usual retro pixel art that's so common.
That trailer went by too fast though. Too quick to get a good look at the game without re-watching it.
The 2D graphics is kind of not good, I prefer the old school pixels graphics like river city girls, sonic mania, or the new tmnt game.
Looks like it’s using the assets from the previously abandoned Golgoth Studios remake, but they cheaped out and didn’t bother with the animation.
@FoxMcMuffin I've heard it called "cutout animation".
Never forget how Microids absolutely BUTCHERED the XIII remake. I won’t touch anything they’re involved with.
At last! This development was announced ages ago, it looked like it was never going to be but hell, here it is. Day one purchase, I love the original.
Got the original on Snes and the sequel lost in tropics. This remaster looks ok, but its that usual art style they always use. It's pixel art that interests me. Check out moon rider, now that looks amazing. What's annoying they make the investment for remasters why not make a completely new instalment, new levels, new bosses. At least we had that with streets of rage 4, and TMNT shredder's revenge.
I don't know man. It was cool back then because of the good pixel art. This one just looks random.
@BionicDodo It basically comes down to fact that creating new games now costs millions, when before it was fraction of that. add in fact that games sell for same price or only 10 dollars more than those games they made in 90s did and you get into situation where they aren't making the money on new games that they do remaking old ones for fraction of cost.
Studios want to remake everything because they can do it for 10 of thousands versus millions, and make the same profit.
consumers don't want to pay for the increased dev costs, they threw a stink when some games went up to 69 (first price increase in literally 20+ years). and devs want to find a way to get profits to cover these costs so they do remakes and microtransactions. There is also some obvious greed involved too when studios buy studios and management are money guys and not developers and are held accountable to shareholders who also care more about profitability than reputation.
I think direction games are going are sadly inevitable. Pretty much only games that stand out anymore are ones specifically funded by selling more than just games. Nintendo for example moves a lot of hardware and subscriptions with their games. Of course even they do the half assed remakes too.
can we get a remakes of the nes turtles game i love that game and its music and while your at it mcdonald land lol oh the old nostalaga days.
@NeonPizza you’re absolutely right! And I forgot I already own it! How silly of me!! Lol 😂
