Animal Crossing: New Horizons is officially the best-selling video game in Japan.
Sales for the game now total 10 million in Japan alone. The previous record-holder, Super Mario Bros., managed to shift 6.81 million on the Famicom (known as the NES in the west).
While the combined sales of the Red, Green and Blue versions of the first Pokémon title on the Game Boy total 10.23 million, these are considered to be separate as only the Red and Green version were released at the same time (on February 27th, 1996, with Blue coming out on October 15th of the same year).
New Horizons has now sold 37.62 million copies worldwide, placing it just behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has sold 43.35 million. New Horizons managed to sell 32.63 million copies in its first year on sale.
Nintendo also confirmed today that the Switch has overtaken the Wii in total hardware sales and has passed 100 million hardware units sold faster than any other games console in history.

Awesome result for the best game in the series so far, the latest update added the icing on the cake to an already incredible package, still playing it every day since launch, only thing i have not touched is the paradise DLC... will get to it at some point.
The theme of today sure has been "Nintendo is succeeding" eh?
Huh, I would not have guessed that.
@RupeeClock,
Guess they must have been succeeding, but you know nothing succeeds like a toothless Budgerigar.
I enjoyed it but I wouldn't say it is the best in the series, it felt kind of...hollow?
But it's the best HD game in the series! Amiibo festival isn't taking that title
Is this even a game?
@johnvboy haha, not heard that before! And you don’t hear many people use ‘budgerigar’ these days!
@Bydlak Yes?
HOLY CRAP! That's phenomenal
@Picola-Wicola,
I was going to go with Budgie, but was not sure of everybody getting it.
@Bydlak,
Easy tiger, but pretty sure it's a game/ life simulator, been playing it for ages now, I might have to stop if find out it's not really a game.
As I have been mentioning, the Switch will be 5yrs old this March. I would like to believe Nintendo will keep the Switch going further, especially since they only have the Switch as a hardware platform. They have profits from mobile, but only Switch for hardware. I would love to see the Switch go the distance, like the 3DS.
They should capitalize on this but they won’t so look forward to another half decade or more before we see a sequel.
Hmm…. I suppose this doesn’t count the various ports of SMB over the years (such as the GBA and VC versions).
All Stars, the GBC game, and the 35th Anniversary Game and Watch probably shouldn’t be counted as they are more alternate versions that come with extras.
Wow, I did not expect that. Congratulations to Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
@Captain-N Yup, exactly one more month until the Switch is 5 years old. I think it's got at least another 3 more years in it. The software line-up for this year is looking fantastic, and I expect Gen 9 of Pokemon to still be on Switch, so that'll be another hardware boost.
I knew Animal Crossing sales were great in Japan but this is extraordinary news. I love the Switch and I’m glad that the system and games continue to find success. great news day for Nintendo and its fans 🥳
Yeah... cause you need a copie for each member of the family😑
@Frankiiie
No you don't
Nice! Personally I don’t care for AC but this is really cool!
Actual quote from he Wiis funeral; "rip wii. and so ends its decade long reign as nintendos top dog. no the virtual boy wasn't invited to the funeral wii u. Long live the king"
Such is the Power of Isabelle, K. K. Slider and Tom Nook!
Super Mario Bros. had a great reign, but a worthy successor appeared at last.
Ya know for some reason I thought one of the Dragon Quests was the best selling game in Japan ever. Not SMB.
Congrats to Animal Crossing on crossing the barrier.
After the final major update it finally became worthy of competing with acnl in terms of content. Outside of a few QOL changes I wanted it's honestly the best I could've hoped for with a sequel
@Ade117 3yrs sounds about right. Also, as you said: Pokemon. You're right.
@Bydlak "Is this even a game?"
I've been playing Animal Crossing for the past month and it's very frustrating. I can't beat the first boss.
@westman98 oh you can start a new island with a other account now?
@Frankiiie nope
long live the king. rip Wii
