Animal Crossing: New Horizons is officially the best-selling video game in Japan.

Sales for the game now total 10 million in Japan alone. The previous record-holder, Super Mario Bros., managed to shift 6.81 million on the Famicom (known as the NES in the west).

While the combined sales of the Red, Green and Blue versions of the first Pokémon title on the Game Boy total 10.23 million, these are considered to be separate as only the Red and Green version were released at the same time (on February 27th, 1996, with Blue coming out on October 15th of the same year).

New Horizons has now sold 37.62 million copies worldwide, placing it just behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has sold 43.35 million. New Horizons managed to sell 32.63 million copies in its first year on sale.

Nintendo also confirmed today that the Switch has overtaken the Wii in total hardware sales and has passed 100 million hardware units sold faster than any other games console in history.
