Wii U's Getting A New Game, And This Will Probably Be The Last

Somehow it seems like the Wii U should be older than 9 years... It was a good wee machine with some great games, a machine that we needed to have in order to get to the Switch!

I didn't realize it's been 9 years... Time's really flown by. I know it's not a popular opinion, but I love the Wii U and I think it had a fair amount of strong games in its library, even if it wasn't as many as other systems. It's also the only console that can play my favorite game of all time, so it'll always hold a special place in my heart for that.

I have 16 USA Wii games currently and will keep add more Wii U games in physical.

I love the Wii U, and i think is a fantastic console. I fully enjoyed my Wii U from the first day I bought it all the way to when I got my Nintendo Switch. I had a blast with that system and it will forever carry a very special place in my heart. I made some wonderful memories with that system (and Miiverse).

@VIIIAxel I think that's part of the beauty of Nintendo consoles - they all feel pretty timeless and like you can just keep going back to their libraries again and again. I'll be playing my 3DS for years to come.

The developer's name reflects the quality of the game.

Not to offend, I'm sure this must've taken time to make, but damn, if I'm gonna pour hours into making a game I'll be sure not to make it look like a bad rip off of NES Mario games.

Captain U sounds like Captain N after a parallel move to a dead post in disgrace to the service, if I might borrow a clumsy military analogy. The video game equivalent to Thule AFB.

@Maximumbeans Agreed! I still use the old GBC and SNES I had when I was very young from time to time, the hardware holds up well and there are plenty of timeless games on all their systems. If it wasn't for the fact that the vast majority of its notable games have been ported to the Switch at this point, I'd say I could see the Wii U becoming a hit with collectors in another 5-10 years much like the GameCube has been lately. The DS/3DS also have fantastic libraries, I come back to them very frequently!

on the topic of Wii U…would anyone know where one can go to get the Wii U game pad repaired in the US? I still have my 8GB white Wii U that’s functional but cannot play games that require the game pad for play

I'm a sucker for games that make use of the GamePad's various functions so I'm tempted to buy this.

I have the Xenoblade Chronicles LE console brand new unopened.
I bought it cheap when the Switch came out.
I bought it as back up for when my day 1 Wii U decides it's had enough.

If only it was a physical release...

Kinda surprised and disappointed this wasn't RCMADIAX.

I need to finish Fatal Frame, Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE and Xenoblade Cronicles X at some point. Everything about the WiiU was so nice and pleasant, from the main menu to additional features like the web browser to Miiverse. If only the system itself wasn't so damn slow

Calling it right now the Wii U will become super collectible soon.

Already has. About a year into the Switch's lifecycle, Wii U prices skyrocketed on Amazon, eBay, and other resellers.

I hope this doesn’t mean the Wii U eshop will close soon. I’m worried about what will happen to my downloaded games if my Wii U dies and the eShop is shut down.

Man, imagine if they'd just never ported Breath of the Wild and it was left where it was on the Wii U. Crazy.

There are other methods you could pursue to preserve your purchases, of course, but I cannot explicitly state them here, nor would I dream of endorsing it.

Why would I throw away my only way to play Wii games thanks to backwards compatibility (the Wii stayed with my family), one of the better Virtual Console libraries that you don't have to subscribe for, and the handful of exclusives that haven't made the Switch?

Well, as long as RCMDIAX has internet access, there's always a chance that another shovelware "game" that nobody wants will extend the Wii U library.

9 years since waiting at midnight to grab one with Nintendo Land, ZombiU and NSMBU! How time flies, that launch night was good times.

man time flies, i remember still being a kid buying the wii u clse to launch too. the description of this game alone sounds like the kinda "tutorial game" that introducing you to the gamepad innovations, kinda nostalgic in a way

I recently hooked up my Wii U again after I moved. I've been having fun replaying some GBA games on the big screen and I'm fairly sure I'm going to buy a few more classics. I always loved the Wii U, shame it was such a big flop.

This game, however, doesn't look quite as exciting as a final game for the Wii U should be...

@HANH Xenoblade X. The games you listed are all great as well! I'm glad the Switch is giving more people an opportunity to experience the Wii U's library, it really deserved more attention.

The kind of people that would throw away a Wii U are the same kind of people that would then relentlessly complain about Nintendo not re-releasing every game they ever make infinitum for each new console. If you like something then hold onto it, this company is not going to cater to your specific whims for the rest of your lifespan.

I was thinking about modding my Switch but even if I do, I can see myself buying this as a fun little last hooray. It’s only $3, seems like a fun high-score based 2D platformer that makes use of the Wii U’s capabilities, and I always like supporting smaller developers when possible (especially when they try keep legacy consoles alive).

@CovidBarbie Not 100% related but your comment reminded me of this recent amusing story of a close friend of mine. He was tight on money earlier this year and had a Wii U he got in high school as the only Nintendo system he owned. He barely played it anymore but still had everything that came with the system, including the box, along with a few games and a Wii remote.

He told me his situation and that he was going to trade his system in. I told him Wii U’s CIB are currently going for $150-$200 on EBay and he could sell it there or on OfferUp or something. Even after I told him this and showed him the values online… he ended up trading it all in at GameStop for like $45 cash. I was dumbfounded.

Worst of all, every now and then he brings up that he would like to play some Nintendo games again and get a Switch. You could have kept your Wii U and played a ton of games there (even modded it) or sold it for a WAY higher price and got a super cheap Switch!

Not my life but it still mildly infuriated me lol.

My only problem with Wii U is that I have 298 titles and I can only buy 2 more games and have them installed, maybe I'll save some shoveware to a flash drive to empty space, and I hope it doesn't lose folders every time I change from HDD to USB drive (because when you have 2 HDD to make a backup afterwards all games.go to the main screen outside folders, and it is a pain to rearrange them)

@boxyguy Same, it feels surreal. I was in early high school when the Wii U came out and it was the first system I got during launch week… also the last system I got where I felt like a “kid”. Now I’m two years out of college and working an uneventful office desk job lol.

@DeathByLasagna That perfectly demonstrates how these high street places still make money. People won't put in slightly more effort and spend slightly more time to get a lot more money, or else save a lot more.

A friend of mine was looking at prices for Pokemon games and he kept looking at high street resellers. I was like, dude, you can easily get these for like 40% cheaper if you just use eBay. 'Oh but I don't have an account and then I have to trust that the pictures are accurate and then if there's a problem I can't return it the same way I can to a store.'

I just told him to sit tight and let me get them for him. The difference for slightly more convenience is absurd.

What a way to go out on, a better swan song than breath of the wild

It's always a shame when big platforms go out with shovelware like this.

Oh, hey, it's that thing! ... That I never saw in the wild since all the gaming stores around here collectively dropped it like a very hot and very rotten potato as soon as possible.

Kind of a pity that it's going out on shovelware.

I bought a used one this year mostly for GBA Virtual Console, N64 Virtual Console, and WindWaker. I also picked up Metroid Prime Trilogy, but haven’t played it yet, I think I’d prefer a re-release of Prime on the switch with regular controls if it really happens. I strongly prefer handheld gaming.

I’ve thought about picking up Affordable Space Adventures, but I am not sure if my kids would play it and not get frustrated or possibly scared by the dark atmosphere. I should pick it up before the eShop shuts down some day though.

Ahh WiiU. The machine that can play most Switch games for less money on a controller that doesn't drift.....

Ah yes, the Wii U, I still love it for what it had to offer. It stood out more as a retro gaming machine to me than anything else.

the wii u will always hold a place in my heart, I fondly remember about to go to sleep on my birthday, then my dad calling me downstairs, with a huge Just Dance 2014 box. In fact, I still use it daily. I don’t use the just dance or mariokart because my dog bit them both, but we have lots of great games and I enjoy my Wii Uand the Miis more than my friends switches. We have some of the most relaxing and fun music in the history of music. They got nothing.
