Remember Calculator, the £8 app that lets you put your real calculator, computer or mobile phone aside to do sums on your games console instead? Well, it now has a direct competitor.
Introducing Battle Calculator, a new game that has you using your calculation skills to do battle with your friends. In a format similar to the numbers round in the popular British game show Countdown, a randomly generated number is provided on-screen, and players must use a combination of numbers from 0 to 9 in conjunction with the add, minus, multiply, and divide functions to make that specific number.
The first person to successfully reach the number wins the round, and you can change how many wins a player needs to take victory. You can also change the size of the number you need to reach, meaning you could opt to hit something in the hundreds, or go crazy with a nine-digit monster.
The game can also be used as an ordinary calculator, which when coupled with the 'battle' element, essentially gives it a one-up over the original Calculator app. We never expected to see such a fierce rivalry in the Switch calculator category, yet here we are.
Battle Calculator is out today on the Switch eShop and costs $14.99. Will you be downloading this one?

Fine, I'll review this one too
That’s a weirdly genius idea. I’m not sure that $15 is the right price for it but with the right advertising and a mobile version, it could be a smallish hit.
You’ve heard of Calculator, now get ready for…
Calculator Deluxe
But what's the frame rate? We need to know these things???
Well, but does it have online multiplayer? What about ranked matches? Can we download and view videos of online matches? There's lots of room for improvement in the fiercely contested calculator game category! I'd like to play this, actually.
Ah, the great Calculator War of 2021.
@WiltonRoots You read my mind! Are you psychic?!
@60frames-please hahahahaha
Can it save replays?
Hopefully Hori releases a good arcade stick for this.
Are we serious?
@Terra lmao, please do--looking forward to it
Gonna wait for Calculator 99
I want to see how this game plays! It sounds like a fun arcade game
...
10 = 10 x 1
N = N x 1 is true for all integers
So is anything that makes and then inverts a calculation like
N = (N-1) + 1
N = (Nx2) / 2
Love the world of gaming....
Another meme purchase for the eShop...
I hate this.
$15 would have been cheap for a calculator at one time..........having an actual game to it adds some intrigue but not on my Switch and not for $15. Maybe $2 on my phone if it didn't have a free calculator already?
I would really like to know the sales numbers of the original calculator and how this new battle stacks up comparably........I'm thinking 100 sold copies might be a high estimate.
Jokes aside, they seem to be different categories at the end of the day, even despite shared functionality - one is a pure app (and let's not pretend portable consoles haven't had the likes of it since Game Boy days) while the other is programmed as a competitive game. A basic one? So is 2048 and it was a hit. Price? Publisher's call and never a big deal for anyone not feeling inexplicably shotgunned to buy things on digital stores. And like I said before, I'm a bit too sociopathic to sympathize with a whole fandom's worth of lacking willpower.
Will I get it myself? Not likely - not even compelled to wishlist it yet, and if I did, it would still be buried somewhere at the bottom of its two-thousand-something titles therein. I just find my disinterest more mundane than to warrant internet dramas and pretentious pseudomoralist soapboxes.
fingers crossed we get Battle Notebook
@CharlieGirl I hear that's the first DLC.
The calculator again, XD, well, leaving aside the memes and the "make fun" for these games, the truth is that this would be worth it as a quick game, especially for games with numbers and fast action, of course, $15, it's very, very exaggerated.
GOTY Material
@HeadPirate While that would completely game the system, it only lets you use 0-9 and 0.1-0.9 as figures.
When I was in 7th grade we played this Math Game called 24, same idea as this game except the number you were always trying to make was 24. You'd draw 4 random digits and have to combine them so 8, 5, 2, 1... (5 - 2) * 1 * 8 = 24. I could totally see a 24-99 battle royale for math nerds.
Yo, Battle Calculator just might be at EVO as the next big game on tournament competitions!
Maybe they'll even make a Battle Calculator Championship Edition.
And you all mocked Donkey Kong Jr Math! Nintendo were just ahead of the curve, as always!
This game will let me consider the OLED switch.
It’s not even April Fool’s Day
Someone saw calculator and was like, "I've got to do something"
Whats wrong with the human race?
Looking forward to the Tom Clancy inspired sequel, The Sum of All Fears
I can’t believe I’m asking this but… is there online play?
Is the game 60fps?
And then to think, the iPad still doesn't have a basic calculator.
What we really need on this system is Seanbaby's Calculords game.
That's great, but it won't be as good as the old ti-83s or 89s until you can download and play tetris and zelda on it.
@SorridoSnake And get ready for the prequel, Abacus: the Conquest of Calculus.
A lot of people seem to be mocking the game, but I actually think it sounds kinda awesome. I’d pick it up on sale, maybe.
Sneaky bosstards, hiding a game in your calculator so you can play games in class...
Don't expect much from FPS, look at those PS2 graphics
Waiting for physical!
@WiltonRoots will the amiibo unlock special abilities?
@ChakraStomps I think the amiibo unlocks a special version of a scientific calculator.
@FaroreAbhorsen
That would be an interesting little indie game project, might have to add that idea to my list.
I hope it doesn't have horrible input lag like the last competitive calculator game on Switch
What is wrong with these developers? My phone has a calculator. Video game console doesn't need one.
@stuntz0rZ But does your phone have a "Battle" Calculator ⚔️🛡️ ??
Mortal Kalculator!!!
Is this Numberwang?
@Terra This real
@Gamer_Mario002 It was for another site but yeah, I had a laugh with it
It reminds me of the ff4ds mini game with the young one, where you do math to increase whyit intalect
Still better than most game shows made today. Not $15 great, but at the right price and level of consumption, I could see this getting incredibly competitive and causing some screaming on game night.
@WiltonRoots Invincible frames ftw
@MS7000 too bad Switch will never get the best meme game which is Meme Run
As a previous Countdown contestant that enjoys nothing more when I have a spare couple of minutes than loading up the Countdown app to do some Numbers game practise. this is the sort of thing I'd get, if it was a little bit cheaper.
