Apart from Metroid Dread, one of the other standout announcements of Nintendo's E3 Direct was the return of the Advance Wars games from the GBA generation.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is being made by the Shantae developer WayForward and has had a facelift (as you probably already noticed), but apart from this, we don't know much else about this updated two-in-one release.
At the end of the Nintendo Treehouse Advance Wars segment, Nintendo of America's representatives confirmed the Re-Boot would include "online gameplay" - with more details about it coming soon. It was also briefly mentioned how there would be support for "up to four players".
Over on Nintendo's official game page, it's mentioned how up to four players will be able to battle each other across dozens of maps, and that online play will require users to have a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Adding to this, the eShop listing says the game is 1-2 players online, and 2-4 players via local wireless.
Obviously, online play wasn't part of the original GBA titles, so it's great to see this modern take including these newer features.

OBSCURE NINTENDO FRANCHISE FANS WE EATING GOOD TONIGHT
@PBandSmelly looks like steak to me!
All we need now is confirmation on the revival of the map builder and this will be my perfect remaster. Fingers crossed!
Can't wait to wage war with the Orange Star Nation again.
Hopefully DS shows up at some point as well.
@Ryu_Niiyama looks like meat’s back on the menu, boys!
great . come on nintendo fans if we buy this and show nintendo that we want old franchises thlen F-zero could be next.
Why not put all this information out during the Direct? Online play for this game is a huge deal.
Unrelated: i hope this means that this will confess Nintendo to do more smaller IPs they own. like Custom Robo and such.
overall, glad to see that it has online though.
Awesome. I remember Days of Ruin had online support back in the day, but obviously you're no longer able to access that (which took a chunk of the game's total content with it, unfortunately).
This is shaping up to be a must-own holiday Switch title.
@Ralizah just wondering but is your profile picture from Danganronpa
And yeah it does look nice and it will be a decent holiday title
@anoyonmus Yep.
@Ralizah very nice
@anoyonmus Thanks!
I don't usually repurchase games, but I'm looking forward to copping that collection of Danganronpa games that's hitting the Switch later in the year. Thought it was never going to make the jump.
This is awesome. Online hopefully includes map sharing.
Hopefully Battalion Wars 3 will be next.
@WCB ...and girls!
Hell yeah. I kept getting close to grabbing both of these for GBA but they're so pricey. Stoked for this.
The eShop page for this says 1-2 players online. I really hope this has asynchronous matches, ala Wargroove, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Hope there's a demo.
@Joeynator3000 As much as I'd really like that, it would probably requite a lot of additional changes. Dual Strike, unlike a lot of DS games, did make a lot of use of both screens. A lot of campaign missions would need to be split or totally reworked.
That's totally something they could do, but I would understand why they might now.
But will the map creator/editor from Advance Wars 2 be back? That was the best part. It is what made war groove so great too.
Excited to try these games for the first time. I got into this style of game last year with FE3H so it's nice to see its "sister series" (I suppose haha) make a return
More importantly, will there be a physical version?
I kind of wish they went with hand drawn animation for the combat sequences and stuck to 3D for the maps, but it's cool either. Looking forward to playing through these again.
Great! online play! Thanks
If Wayforward can do something about the plastic one-tone units and contrast of the map:
Anyway Nintendo, we will be mighty fine when this is released both boxed and digital.
Very excited about this. December is so far away 🥺
We do know it will be a full priced game, and that will put a lot of would be buyers off, it certainly doesn't look like a premium game.
I'd like to have a classic mode. I prefer the 2d graphics. Speaking of which I need to score a GBA and advance wars 1 and 2.
Loved playing the original games on the DS
Not completely sold on the graphics yet. I am, after all, a pixel junkie, but I am still looking forward to it.
@Kanbei Thanks, I've updated the article to include this information.
Now we're talking
Hold up, I just noticed this game doesn't support Cloud Saves. How can something like Monster Hunter get by fine with them but Nintendo adds online vs. to a game and instantly disables Cloud Saves?
but no physical version? I'm not buying this digital
Lego Advance Wars for $60! What an awesome thing, probably they could have made a scheme like Pokemon where you have to pay $120 to defeat 'em all!
@KBuckley27 It has a physical version.
I hope they add some serious new content, like new campaigns. I'm tired of the switch being all about ports of old games.
Can't wait; hope this gets the support it needs to warrant a new entry sometime afterwards as well.
I am glad online play is included- hopefully with friends rather than random nonsense!
This is where Monkey Ball Mania has dropped off my list- no online play for mini games (target, billiards, golf, etc) which is a huge loss! Such a shame
Hopefully it will be more lively than Tiny Metal's online. Area35 really dropped the ball on not shipping the game with multi at launch.
Also hoping for hot seat!
@chipia It's a remake of the first 2 games. It's not a port.
@tntswitchfan68
You said F-Zero when you meant Wave Race. 😉
@FatWormBlowsASparky you said Wave Race when you meant Pilotwings
I balked a bit at the full 60 Euro price initially but after thinking about it, my view softened a bit. If paying full fat will help them to renew the franchise, then I'm all for it
I think we can be sure that there will be a physical release. I have no doubt about that.
I hope the online mode will be not in real time. So that I make a turn when the other player is not online and the next time the other player is online, he can make his turn when I'm not online. Like postcard chess or Outwitters on the iPad. That would be the first reason for me to have a Nintendo Online subscription.
Easily the biggest announcement of E3 for me. I really REALLY hope they have another, full-fledged title in the series on the way (maybe using the same engine as this Re-Boot?)
@FatWormBlowsASparky they all sound great to me! would love to see all of them.
@sanderev Doesn't matter, remakes are usually not much different from ports, they generally just have a more substantial graphical update, like Links Awakening.
The only exceptions I can think of are things like FF7 Remake and Metroid:Zero Mission as they also overhauled the gameplay and added new content.
But so far advance wars looks like it will be closer to Links Awakening, in terms of new content.
Day 1 a thousand times over. 😁♥
Must remember to play Tiny Metal before this comes out. Would have loved a new AW game but it's been long enough since I played the GBA ones that I'll definitely be getting this.
Don't think I'll be playing it online myself but it's nice that they added it in for sure. But even if they didn't, I'm just glad they're bringing this series back at all. It's like they're finally listening to fans.
I hope they will do something like this as well:
An enhanced version of the original Game Boy Wars was produced by Hudson Soft and was released in 1998 under the name Game Boy Wars TURBO. The main new feature in this version is that the CPU now has a faster decision-making algorithm during its turns, allowing battles to proceed swifter than in the original. It also boasts 50 new maps, as well as support for the Super Game Boy..
50 maps!
I'm really not good at these types of games, but I don't even care. I love Advance Wars. It's just such a cool little series from one of my favorite eras in video games. I hope Dual Strike and especially Days of Ruin get this remake treatment soon. I really need to play through the Tiny Metal games ahead of this game releasing.
In Europe Nintendo is listing this as both:
So physical release confirmed for EU. Can't seem to find this info on .com.
I don't like only 2 players online. Wargroove takes the online part in such a good way, with open-ended matches and up to 2vs2. I can just hope that it will at the very least be better than the "online support" in Days of ruin. That was a disgrace.
Furthermore, no mention of map editor.
I love the online system in Wargroove. So much settings, you can suspend a match and continue later on, you can get a disconnection, no problem. Only thing I miss in that game is no connection to the Switch last play with add-function and no way to communicate even by emois.
Most important thing for Advance Wars online matches is to have an asynchronous option for matches. Give players a week to take their turn or something along those lines, maybe a day for matchmaking with non friend players. They have required both players to be online for the whole match and it had to be played on one go in the past games. I never finished a match online because of this. It's such a simple oversight and I don't understand how it was overlooked.
@chipia Remakes are made to represent the original work in a new way. A port is an original game that is adjusted to run on a newer/different platform.
Both can have additional content. But only remakes are completely remade (hence the name) from scratch.
So no, those are not comparable.
MarioKart 8 deluxe = port
Link's Awakening DX = remake
@Daniel36 A friend said the same, they've not mentioned anywhere that there would be a retro mode, but would be nice.
@sanderev I'm aware that remakes are technically different from ports, as they are developed from scratch, but from a consumer point of view it doesn't matter.
People don't buy a game for the way it has been developed, but for the actual final product. When I remake a game and the final result is almost identical to the original, then it is certainly comparable to a port.
In the case of Link's Awakening, from a technical point of view it is a new game as it was developed from the ground up, but from a consumer point of view it is just a graphics patch for an old game, as the gameplay is almost identical to the gameboy version.
I am so excited for this. I'm a little bummed that it's a full priced release, but i'll buy it anyway. The two campaigns together are at least 40 hours of gameplay. I have been gagging for anything Advance Wars related for over a decade at this point...
I'm stoked for this release and will almost certainly get it, especially with online confirmed, but I really dislike the art style. I would have preferred higher resolution 2D sprites, or pretty much anything that didn't look like a mobile game.
A few days ago, there was an NL article lamenting that Nintendo no longer developed the modestly budgeted titles that were still wildly entertaining games in the DS/3DS era. At E3, we got Advance Wars, Warioware, and 2D Metroid. They seem to understand that spectacular new releases don't always have to be expensive, multi-year developed AAA games. This is good!
My only question is: Will the Design Map feature have online capabilities-to upload our creations to be downloaded and used in these matches??
Delighted this is back love the series since GBA days got them all and was terrified I'd never see it again.
Don't care if digital only or no cloud saves. I'm delighted and I'll be getting it.
This series was a massive part of my childhood, i'm thrilled its coming back and i really hope this is a testing ground to see if making a new one is worth it. Buy it people.
I do not care for online play, but I'm looking forward to this remaster. I only played a little bit of the first one, but i enjoyed it greatly.
@roadrunner343
Yea, the graphics is not pretty. But I do think 3D is the right direction anyway, it gives the battlefields some depth. And while the graphics isn't impressive by any means, it at least looks very clear in opposite to Tiny Metal with its overly-clottered graphics, were one can barerly distinguish between unit types. I think they did the right thing there with this remake. Would be neat if it got some modern post-process effects to stuff like rain, fog of war, explosions etc...
@RasandeRose Yeah. I would have loved something very stylized like Valyria Chronicles. It's also possible that once in motion and I'm playing it, I won't care about at all, but initial reaction for me is that it is quite unappealing. Still - underneath it all, it's going to be Advance Wars, so it will be hard to be disappointed =)
Things I wish they did, hope they add:
Let us switch between the original version of the game and the new.
Let us mix and match the new and old features. I'd love to play with the new soundtrack and backdrops, but use all the old pixel animations and army men.
(Everything about this game looks great except for the troops and the character animations. They look very lazy, and I've heard that classic character animations like Andy's peace sign are no longer in the game)
Perhaps now, with Warioware and Advance Wars both having a game on Switch, Nintendo will be ready to get some of their best characters in Smash. Not that I play Smash, but I DO wonder why they haven't added Ashley, Kat & Ana,... and Sami, Andy, Max,... as proper characters as far as I know.
Well, whatever, I'll play Advance Wars again, maybe the originals rather than the remake, and Warioware, also maybe the original, or Twisted, the best one. Smash, probably not.
I think this pretty much indirectly confirms the reality that ninty would rather monetise classics, rather than put them on switch online.
I want this so much but i know itll be a full price and never go on sale
I never owned 1&2 so I’m stoked for this.
I hope they include an “email” type mode. That’s perfect for these turn based strategy games. You make your move and then can go play something else. Come back to the game later and your opponent has made their move.
They could even integrate notifications onto both the Switch and the Online app on iOS android. That way you’ll know when your opponent has made their move.
No doubt this is gonna turn out fantastic. I hope this does well when it launches, maybe then Nintendo will do a new one.
@chipia No, if you make a new game to give the same feeling as the old game, but without using the game engine, sprites, etc from the original game it can't be a port in any way. It's a remake.
Link's Awakening is 100% not a port. There is nothing, I repeat NOTHING from the old GB/GBC games in it.
Actually Link's Awakening is a very nice example.
GB: Link's Awakening = original
GBC: Link's Awakening DX = port, exactly the same game but modified for the GBC.
Switch: Link's Awakening = remake. All 3D models, all new graphics, all new controls, new modes, removal of some old modes, new game engine, new animations, everything in this game is new. Well except for the story. That makes it a 100% remake. Not. A. Port.
"People don't buy a game for the way it has been developed, but for the actual final product."
That is something you should always do. Buy games (and other things) depending on if you want to buy it and you want to spend the money on it.
"When I remake a game and the final result is almost identical to the original, then it is certainly comparable to a port."
Link's Awakening (Switch) is fully 3D, has nice animations and is in full color. It's IN NO WAY IDENTICAL to the GB/GBC games.
Also remake / port aren't technical terms, they literally explain what the game's relation is compared to the original.
If Link's Awakeing would've looked like this:
But streched to the 16:9 ratio of the Switch, it would've been a port.
But it looks like this:
And the same goes for this new game. Which I 100% sure am going to buy.
Oh hell yeah. That's exactly what I wanted. Missed the bit of Treehouse where they said it, thanks for the heads-up.
@Liam_Doolan So I know this is out of subject, but are you working for Nintendo?
@Ralizah yeah I might get the Danganronpa games too on Switch
