Metroid 5 Is Coming To Switch As Metroid Dread, And It's 2D

So looking forward to this. I think I wanted this more than Prime 4. I was just posting that I missed the smaller companion games.

Would have been happy with bringing Metroid: Samus Returns over to Switch. And then it's the infamous Dread. ~Now the speculation about whether it has anything to do with the rumored dread game from so long ago.~ Edit: No need to speculate if you believe the interview.

This looks very much like its made by the numbnuts who made Samus Returns which does temper my expectations and hype in a pretty big way but I suppose its better than getting nothing Metroid related ever.

Pretty much this and zelda did it for me. I was hoping for a few more franchises to be there, but I suppose 2 out of 5 ain't bad..

This game alone automatically made Nintendo the winner of E3. Nothing beats Metroid, nothing.

That trailer makes this game look a lot scarier than Metroid Fusion. That game very unexpectedly scared me a lot. Took me by surprise. If this is more scarier I'll definitely be more prepared Can't wait to get my hands on it so I can pause it to take a breather when scary stuff happens

Great devs tbh but they didn't capture Metroid 2s vibes that well with returns (and I loved returns it was amazing) but this seems like Samus returns but they make it more in line with og metrois this is a dream!

I shouted out 'Get in there' when this was shown. Amazing reveal. A modern remake of an unreleased sequel to my favourite 2D Metroid.

Really excited with this announcement, it was probably the one that made the direct for me.

A new 2D metroid with artstyle that reminds me of Shadow Complex, should be awesome.

Has a bit of a survival horror feel with being chased like Fusion did.

Although the graphics are decent I kinda prefer the pixel art. What was shown looked a wee bit bland. Still gonna get it though.

The highlight of a very lacklustre presentation……no Starfox, F-Zero, Mario Kart, Pilotwings, Wave Race, 2D Mario, 3D Mario. Longtime Nintendo fans still left wanting.

I'm a bit cautious cause SR was good but I didn't like some elements of it, but hey...it's a freaking new Metroid game!!!

This definitely looks awesome. Hopefully this sells a few million so it won't be the last 2D Metroid.

The game looks like a dream, so I'm going to stay away from watching any more. Treehouse is doing a great job, but gotta save that discovery feeling for when I am definitely planning to play (day 1, probably with Amiibo in hand)

I've been a fan of Metroid since Metroid II on the Gameboy, I didn't have a NES at the time, though i have since played it. When i first saw the announcement, Metroid 5...YAY!!! 'Metroid Dread' - OMG It's REAL!!
I'd actually given up expecting this game. WOW At last I so can't wait to get this game....and Metroid Prime 4.

This was unbelievable. I figured we might get another 2D Metroid someday, but I never would've expected Dread to come back

Never got very far in Samus Returns, as I got sidetracked by the 3DS Metroid Prime game that sort killed the hype I had for the former (it was just not very good played solo IMO).

But this inspires me to give Samus Returns another (I actually liked it quite a lot - the gameplay was interesting and the graphics quite ok).

But then I'm also a bit of a Mercury Steam fanboy. I liked Castlevania LOS Mirror of Fate for the 3DS and also LOS 2 for the PS3. I just hope they keep the price of Dread relatively low (being a 2.5D game and all).

@Ventilator Yeah but the thing is if this entry is fantastic then who needs Metroid Prime 4. This game isn't some Metroid spinoff so we could game until MP4 arrival, it's an actual sequel in the main Metroid entry. It's the actual Metroid 5. We should had been playing Metroid Prime 4 waiting for this instead.

This was easily the moment of this year's E3, imo. Love the Prime games but prefer the 2D ones so even with Prime 4 still not getting a real showing this is a tradeoff I'm not upset with.

No More Heroes III in August and this in October, Switch is set up for a really nice second half of 2021.

I'm confident the game will be good, but why is it so devoid of color? All environments look so bland.

Best part of the show to me even though the art style seems a bit off. I almost expected a "Metroid X Portal" logo to show up ... which yeah, I guess, why not, but it feels weird coming off previous games, that felt more grime&gritty.

I’m torn really on this direct. This was the only thing to interest me apart from Zelda, and will be getting day one but . . . Just couldn’t get on with shamus returns it felt boxy to me and never got a few hours in . Love super and fusion and prime games and yes other m as well. Oh well back to streets of rage 2 xxx how did link get to be freefalling, hope there is a loft wing in the game xxxx

This was my favorite reveal. Not only was it new, but it was a new Metroid game and in 2D fashion. One of our kids absolutely loves the 2D Metroid games, and has beaten them all (some multiple times), so this is a day one purchase for us.

Maybe it's time I go and try the 2D Metroids and attempt to finish them.....

Nice looking Amiibos. Estimate them being 29,99 as well skyward sword Amiibos. If you look at the picture and the statue, you see some details missing on Samus's left hand glove and shoulder pads. Let's wait for the final versions.
This game looks good as well. Hopefully it plays better than the Wii's Metroid: Other M game.

Kudos fellow Mark of the Ninja fan.....I love that game, played it thru multiple times, first on X360, then PC, then Switch. That is one of my favorite 2D Platform games ever and has great replay as you unlock the various Ninja styles and then the game plays very differently with each one. I really wish we would see a sequel to Mark but Klei been busy with other stuff like Griftlands (which I haven't tried yet but like card RPGs so expect to).

This new (old) Metroid looks dope. I like the work Merc_Steam has done with the Samus Returns remake and the CastleV 3DS game (that too many people seemed to hate).

This is what I had been wanting for over 2 decades now since Metroid Fusion and now I'm glad it's finally real and coming. Dread was hinted at and rumor at one point to be coming for GBA, DS, and 3DS but never materialize until now. Definitely a day one buy for sure.

I remember thinking the wait from Super Metroid to Fusion was long. Good for those that are excited for this new entry. I hope you all enjoy it. Personally, I saw several things that I didn't like in the trailer and I'm not really into the overall look of this series done in this style. So I'll be skipping this one.

Guess they weren't able to save Metroid Prime 4, but as one that prefers Metroid in 2D, I'll happily take a 2.5D style Metroid game in the place of what we've been expecting for four years now.

Hopefully for the Prime fans (Of which I'm also one, although I do give a slight edge to Metroid in 2D with my personal presences), that long rumored Metroid Prime Trilogy HD collection actually ends up happening as a consolation prize.

If so and Metroid Prime 4 is still in the works, than that's great to hear. While I'm rather skeptical that they've quietly had a completely different Metroid project underway simultaneously, I'd love to find out that indeed has been the case.

So while I doubt it, I'm hoping that's correct.

The developers fill me with no confidence. We will see more in the coming months and hopefully they pull a turn around and not become complacent like Arzest.

If one wants to think that Metroid Prime 4 is safe and still in development, that's fine and I very much hope that indeed is the case.

I quite possibly have been too hasty in thinking that the project has likely been reimagined away from the Prime formula and that this is it, but we'll see.

Either way, what's getting lost in this back & forth is that a new Metroid game was unveiled today. That's all I care about, so consider our sidetrack closed from my end.

Maybe people will actually buy Metroid this time and actually make it a franchise that makes it worth Nintendo time to invest in.

@Atariboy Why would they change it from an FPS after 3 whole titles, and switch it to 2D? You're not making any logical sense at all. Metroid Prime has always been an FPS sub-series for Metroid. Samus Returns was made by MercurySteam, and the style of this game is too similar to Samus Returns. It's logical to think MercurySteam is behind it.

Retro Studios and MercurySteam are nowhere near the same company or studio.

Further: They say they are still working on Metroid Prime 4, right in the direct itself. After they previously announced, publicly, that Metroid Prime 4 had it's development scrapped and restarted under Retro Studios after Bandai Namco's work wasn't up to snuff back in 2019.

You literally have nothing to base the project being dead on, except personal opinion.

Have just recently completed Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Hollow Knight. Sad to say, but everything about this looks bland compared to both of them, even the music playing during the trailer. Hope it'll be good when it releases.

Metroid Prime 4 was announced four years ago; then, in early 2019, Nintendo said that development had restarted with Retro Studios. It's still in development, and hasn't appeared in this year's E3.

This game was in production much earlier, back in the mid-late 2000s, but it didn't reach completion and nothing was certain about its status until now.

Anyway, its a 2d game, unless its a massive adventure with tons of replay value i aint paying $60 for a sidescroller in 2021. Those type of games with high production values generally go for about $30, and I'll be happy to pay $30 for it when i get the chance!

Whilst it wasn't Prime 4, it was a new Metroid game. I am so excited for a fresh 2D concept. And in fairness they did say Prime 4 was still in the works, let's not lose hope!

I’m surprised how much Metroid Dread has stuck with me... I keep thinking about it, and I’ve never really played a Metroid (besides Prime series).

The Developer interview is what really sparked my imagination... this looks like a very special game.

Highlight of the show for me. I was hoping for and expecting a 2D Metroid. I didn't think they would bring back Dread. It looks so refined and dynamic that I think they might have actually surpassed my expectations. And the E.M.M.I.s, yeah I think they're going to give me nightmares for weeks. I want this game. Inject it directly into my bloodstream.

It looks good. I am in on this one.

The bar has been set so low/people have been so starved of Metroid news that people actually think the trailer looks great.

Besides the game looking like a reused asset dump from 3DS Samus Returns, albeit upscaled to HD but HD as in WiiU levels of HD and not what the Switch should be able to do, the only gameplay hook that's new is having your very own Nemesis chasing you around.

Compare this to the other Metroidvanias already on the Switch like Hollow Knight, the Ori series etc. and this falls flat in terms of gameplay and graphics (at least in terms of what Nintendo has shown in the trailer).

If the next 2D Mario was shown off with such un-polish and boring gameplay, I'm quite sure there would be a big hoo-ha about it. Thus it's a surprise game only managed to escape those kinds of criticism but instead was generally viewed positively really shows how much pass we give Metroid.

Can someone please objectively tell me what was good about the trailer shown. I.e. "Gameplay looked great and unique" or "graphics really popped".

I'll keep my eyes on this, as I love Metroid. I do prefer free exploration, as to linear "go hear, go there" for Metroid.

While I prefer the prime games this pleases me to exist and I'm quite excited by a day 1 pick up. The question I need to make a call on is regular or special edition. What a way to slip a surprise for the Metroid 35th anniversary .

Best reveal of their Direct. With E.M.M.I. sections, I think this game will be more varied than Samus Returns which had too much focus on the Melee Counter. Looking forward to the environment backgrounds for Dread as well, the backgrounds might have been the best aspect of Samus Returns.

@Aqueous There's very very very little chance of you getting a Collector's Edition. If you see one tho, do not hesitate and preorder it. Same with the amiibo, it's been hell today.

@QuickSilver88 I did a second play through, but stopped after half way, I loved it, but I was ready to move on. It’s in my top five, when it comes to modern days games. I’ll revisit one day. I was looking forward to a sequel, but when I read that the developer was purchased, and the corporation didn’t have a good track record, I figured a sequel will never happen.

I agree! You can take issue with smaller games/remakes like the new WarioWare, Advance Wars and Mario Party costing 50-60€, but a game like this deserves to be full price.

The sequel that I was really wanting. Prime is an OK game I guess… despite owning the original trilogy for Wii, just played some minutes of the first game…

I'm hyped for this, so happy to be getting a new Metroid game on the Switch. While I'm looking forward to Metroid Prime 4, as well as the rumored Prime trilogy, this is something to tide me over.

@ProfessorNess Boi. Comparing Metroid Dread to Hollow Knight and Ori is stupid. What the actual heck is wrong with you? They are completely different art styles entirely. Hollow Knight is hand-drawn 2D animation. Ori's visual style is unique. You're grasping at straws by comparing apples to oranges to melons here.

Now I'm no expert, but I'd say the gameplay looked great and the graphics really popped.

The chase and stealth sections look intense, the standard gameplay looks fun as well. It looks like it's smooth, the action looks top notch while also seeming to put attention to exploration as well.

Graphics-wise it looks good to me, especially the few areas where Samus is mostly shadowed and the foreground is the focus. Reminds me of Donkey Kong Country Returns in some areas.

And from what I've seen of abilities, the slide looks smooth. The spiderclimb looks like it will add more puzzle elements. Shadow Cloak looks like it will increase tension and stealth.

My only other hope is for suit upgrades and unique abilities

@huyi uhhh no, Metroid Dread is a 2D game, which is Metroid 5 and follows on from the original 2D games and Metroid Fusion. Metroid PRIME 4 is a 3D game. The Prime series is a separate series set at a different point in the timeline and all follow on from each other. They're all 3D. There are two new Metroid games in development, one 2D, one 3D.

Ahh thx for clarifying, was beginning to think this was the Metroid they talked about a few years ago in Direct, the teaser was only the logo, as you said was prime 4.
So we’ll be getting another Metroid the…..think launch game next system.

@Classic603 I'll accept the fact that different people like different styles of graphics and leave it at that.

However regarding gameplay (sliding, clinging to walls, stealth mode, chase sequences etc.), what you've just described has been done so many times in other Metroidvanias and cannot really generate the excitement in most of the average and common gamer who is not a Metroid fan.

Given that I missed out the Treehouse section when I made my comment, the boss fight looked really good, but other than that, the general moment to moment gameplay looked real bogged-down standard fare.

I'm not comparing apples to oranges, I'm comparing the common apple to those apples in Japan that sell for $10 a piece. That's how I'd prefer to peddle apples.

In any case, we should look at how consumers in general view the different kinds of apples, and not determine it by our own bias opinion. Looking at sales figure for Samus Returns on 3DS compared to Hollow Knight and both the Ori games, I kind of feel that they would prefer the $10 Japanese apple a lot more than your common variety...

@ProfessorNess Do you even understand what the meaning of generic is? Nothing about what we saw in the Dread trailer, or anything else qualifies under any definition of that word.

Also, yes, you are comparing apples to oranges. 2D animations is an entirely different style of graphics than 3D models. Ori and the Blind Forest and it's sequel use a completely different style than either Dread or Hollow Knight, and Dread has it's own visual style distinct from either of them. Just because they are Metroidvanias doesn't mean they are apples to apples. Your entire assertion is ridiculous.

Just because the visual style of Dread doesn't match up to your standard or desired aesthetic does not make it "generic" by any stretch. You cheapen the word and make it lose it's meaning by doing so. You and so many other people do this crap and use "generic" like a catch-all for something that doesn't particularly wow you, and I'm sick of it.

Either use the word properly or don't use it at all.

@HamatoYoshi I grew up in the 90s you presumptuous jerk. I grew up with the Super Nintendo, Game Boy/GBC, the N64, the Gamecube, GBA, the Wii, NDS, and so on. I have been a Nintendo boy all my life. Also a poor attempt at deflecting.

Just because a lot of the franchises you listed are dear to people's hearts doesn't mean you speak for them. I get tired of people like you doing that crap.

@MegaVel91 Ok sure. Explain to me Metroid Dread's visual style since you managed to nicely explain Ori and Hollow Knight and how it sets itself apart from other Metroidvanias.

Anyway seeing how you're trying to defend the game from multiple other comments makes me feel real bad for you so I'll be back in a few months when reviews and sales figures are in to see how well your comment has aged.

@ProfessorNess I am going to wheel around from your original comment and give you the full package instead:

Metroid Dread has a heavy sci-fi visual style with lots of visual minute details, the kind of stuff you'd expect from it's inspiration: the Alien movies. Such visual details include the greebling on Samus' suit and the visual environment around her, as can be seen in the cinematic trailers. It is however a distinct visual style from Samus Returns, and even the likes of Metroid Prime, which is also visually detail-heavy due to also being of the Sci-Fi genre. It doesn't however have the gritty look a lot of AAA devs go for (not to speak of the Prime series, which doesn't do that either) which already is a good thing.

As of the current build of the game, the lighting conveys a feeling of sterility and unnatural cleanliness in some parts of the game, despite the look of everything else, like a hospital ER or well-kept research facility, which, if you had seen anything beyond the trailer, like say the Dev history video for Dread, would make some sense why the artists, SFX and other people working on the design of the game chose that.

As for the gameplay, the things that pop out the most are the increase framerate, which means gameplay will be smoother compared to Samus Returns, which, if this holds up in the final build, means MercurySteam did a bang-up job optimizing the game, adding more to that is the new Dash Melee ability shown in the trailers, which hopefully means the "stop-and-go" nature of the Melee Counter from Samus Returns has been somewhat mitigated.

The fact Samus has a Slide Maneuver similar to Mega Man now is another standout feature, something Samus has never had in any game before, where the Morph Ball usually was the sole way of going through tight spaces, this means the player has more options for navigating those spaces if they so desire, and more options are never a bad thing.

Overall Dread is shaping up so far to be MercurySteam's greatest work, which considering Samus Returns played so well despite it's flaws, instills me with quite a bit of confidence.
