The original version of Dark Alliance made its debut on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2001 and was ported across to the GameCube. Here's a rundown if you've not played this title before, along with some screenshots and key features:
This revival of the original Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance puts the ‘action’ back into the action-RPG genre, plunging players into the heart of Faerûn. As well as looting and leveling, players must actively defend against and dodge attacks, evade deadly traps and fight hordes of monsters ranging from swarming kobolds to the iconic and all-consuming Gelatinous Cube.
Featuring three customizable heroes, this epic adventure spans dozens of locations across three massive acts, through the dungeons beneath the city of Baldur’s Gate, to the peak of Burning Eye mountain, deep into the Underdark and beyond.
Key features:
- A re-release of the beloved console classic
- Three race and class combinations. Play as a dwarven fighter (Kromlech), a human archer (Vahn) or an elven sorceress (Adrianna).
- 11 vividly rendered spells, including Magic Missile, Otuluk’s Icy Sphere, and Mordenkainen’s Sword.
- More than 40 different types of monsters and boss villains.
- Over 25 active and passive skills to buff your adventurer’s ability to deal and take damage.
- Varied environments, from the sewers beneath the city of Baldur’s Gate, to the Sunset Mountains, to the Marshes of Chelimber.
- Four difficulty levels to challenge even the hardiest adventurer; "Easy", "Normal", "Hard" and "Extreme".
- Fully voice-acted by an all-star cast.
- Local co-op support!

Anybody know if there is online play? I'm guessing no but 🤞
My brother and I co-op played the GameCube version together back in the day and had great fun beating it. Sometimes at night I'd be dozing off and he would bull rush into my character and give my controller a good rumble to wake up lol. Good stuff. I was so bummed the 2nd game didn't come to GameCube back then. I hope that comes to switch.
I've never played a Baldur's Gate game before but I've always wanted to. This could be the one. I really like the look of it and if it was regarded as one of the games of the year in 2001, it should still hold up pretty well today.
Wow! This is hawt! Thanks for the news!!
NINJA APPROVED
Too expensive IMHO. A straight port of a game I played (and loved) in 2003?, for US$30 today it is too much. I would definetily pay this if it was remastered. I will pass until a sale comes up.
Yes it’s £30. For a straight port of a GameCube game. No remaster.
Eh maybe at $15-20 I'll bite.
I loved this one when I was a kid. I don't think I will be revisiting it though!
One of my favourite games. But at this price it should have been both games in the series.
Also: very weird to release this when a new game that's very different in gameplay but with an almost identical name is just about to release in a few weeks.
What's with that exchange rate? €30 is £26 and $30 is only £21.50!
Oh yeah! I’ll be getting this. Great game.
Like others have said here I love this game, but £30 is a bit steep if its not a had much improvements beyond wide-screen support. Still tempting though honestly
So iconic I'm pretty sure I've never heard of it. Might still be really good but I don't think "iconic" is the right word.
I only ever played the GBA version, it was pretty good.
Too expensive. Otherwise, it's a wonderful game and I'm so happy they ported it.
30 bucks is too much, they have killed the game by putting such a high price for 20 years old game
...and iconic? no way..
I loved this on the GC but it is really short.
Considering the original games caused the company to be sued this is a crazy surprise. I'm probably still going to pick it up even though it is really expensive.
Very tempted. Absolutely loved this game - nostalgia is a huge draw. Price however is ridiculous
@BetterThanVegas Really?? Why?
Also, I loved this game on Gamecube! I was just thinking about it literally about 2 days ago, and how it would be kinda cool on Switch. Though, as many have pointed out, 30 is quite high for a pretty straight port. Not sure if I will revisit it or not yet.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Yes, and 30$ is also 25€, but we always get 30€... It's unfair.
My partner and I absolutely loved this game on the ‘Cube, we played it through three or four times! I’m glad co-op has survived the port. I’ll stick it on my wish list and wait for a good sale discount (the other BG games have had discounts in the past).
I’d really hope for the sequel to be ported as well, but I remember reader there were licensing or rights issues which is why it never made it past Xbox and PS2.
@neufel What is the similar named game due out in a few weeks?
I know the name but never played this One. Kinda looks similar to diablo.
@TSR3 My guess is Diablo 2 but just a guess Also nostalgic or not for this price better get Diablo 3.
@samuraicop
Aside from the polish, they made new Campaigns for the Ports.
I wouldn't call that lazy.
The PS2 version got a 9.4 from IGN, and D.I.C.E. named it the best RPG of 2001.
It definitely has and Untold Legends/Diablo vibe to the gameplay and loot system, which is something I can definitely get behind.
This game always looked pretty sweet. Now to find a friend...
Shame it's not 4 player. Otherwise, cool that they rereleased it.
This is an awesome Diablo-like on the Xbox.
OMG I used to play this game with my mom years ago on the ps2. I love this game so much and hope 2nd game makes it to the Switch!
@TheWingedAvenger Haha you say Russian is shun? What about Baltic region? We don't even have eshop officially that is Still have to use UK region. Same for Playstation or Xbox for that matter.
@Liam_Doolan You forgot that this game has been released on GBA as well.
@TSR3 Galdur's Bate: Park Reliance
Absolutely love this game, so will purchase it to hopefully support the release of it's much superior sequel!
@samuraicop The other BG ports on Switch are fantastic, they are enhanced versions of the original game with expanded content, updated UI, and even the console versions got a lot of special love in regards to it's control scheme. For $30 I think the BG1/BG2 Enhanced Editions are extremely worth it as they are collectively like 50+ hour games with loads of replayability.
I do however think $30 is a bit steep for this particular re-release since it isn't even really a remaster, I will still get it as I love those games, but yeah asking the same price for this as the dual pack for BG1/BG2 is a bit crazy, especially if there's no physical.
I played this game alot as a kid, liked it then but I feel like games of this type have improved a whole lot since this game was released. I had my fill of this game back in the day so I don't really have any desire to return to it.
people complaining aren't noticing that it's widescreen - and 60fps - and we spent way more on Fortnite Skins that we never use anymore.
@aozgolo the 30 dollar price tag is for people like me that want the game and will pay it - whatever.
everyone knows that sales happen - OFTEN - so if you don't want to pay that price - then wait for the sale.
@neufel What game is that?
I'ver just finally watched the trailer. The graphics do look seriously improved over the (GC) original. But as it's multi-platform the trailer's probably from current gen. It'll be interesting to see Switch gameplay footage.
"Diablo clone"? You know nothing, @Diogmites !
Dark Alliance is an ARPG spin off for consoles from the OG Baldur's Gate RPG from the late '90's. It still follows AD&D 2nd edition rules, like PC BG. I never played Diablo 2 (looking forward to the remake), so I'll bow to your comparative opinion of the two.
is this on the UK eshop? I can't find any mention of it.
This was a fun game back when it came out, but I can't see shelling out that much for a plain re-release.
This was a nice wake-up call. It’s a straight port... but take my disposable effin’ income!!!
Not at that price. £15 tops for such an old game that already ran at 1024x768 on xbox and GC. Perhaps in a sale. Not sure why it is priced so high compared to other games of the era, Ikaruga, Jedi Knight 2&3, Repulic commando etc.
@gurtifus Intentional, it's not the same game.
The GC version was my favorite GC RPG, and that is now on the Switch.. Yeah.
Also can't find it on the eShop.
Awesome!! Had a great time with this game and the sequel on Xbox but I’m gonna hold off however as the price is just too steep for a digital game and it’s not even a remaster. $15 would be more of a fair price IMO.
I'm glad they brought this back, even if it's just a re-release the smooth performance makes it worth replaying. Hopefully they also bring back the sequel too since that one was never ported to any Nintendo hardware.
wow thats a bit steep for a straight port
This is never one I got to back in the day but always wanted to. It really reminds me of my old favorite gauntlet legends games. I will wait for the a sale I’m thinking tho.
I love this push to bring back gems.
@Diogmites
Ah i see. I might look into it.
@TimNL @TSR3 I was talking about "Dungeons and Dragons: Dark Alliance".
The game is set on the same "realm" as Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance with familiar characters like Drizzt. But the gameplay is very different.
The game won't release on Switch though.
@Heavyarms55
definitely iconic. there's even a sequel. My friends and I would get drunk and play this game.
So many people complaining about the $30 price tag don’t realize how much of a STEAL that is - the GameCube copy of this game still regularly sells for $40-$50 USED on eBay and has been for ages! There’s a lot of nostalgia for this, and that price is perfectly fair compared to the aftermarket price. If anything I expect this to cause the aftermarket pricing to take a big hit.
@neufel Ah yes, thanks. I just knew it as Baldur's Gate 3.
I played the Game Boy Advance port of Dark Alliance many years ago. It was the closest thing to handheld Diablo at the time. Probably won't bother with it on the Switch since I already have Diablo III, Torchlight II, and Victor Vran, so I'm pretty well set as far as action RPGs go.
@TSR3 That's yet another game in the Dungeon & Dragons Forgotten Realms universe, but this is not Baldur's Gate 3 either.
Baldur's Gate 3 is a single player game PC only for now
Dungeon & Dragons : Dark Alliance is an online coop game for Playstation/Xbox https://darkalliance.wizards.com/en
As I said: very weird to release this game when the names of other games are so similar and will get lost.
Nothing on the french eshop for now !
Wow did not know this was coming out
I used to love this game
Will admit i am tempted to pick it up but not at that price
Needs a price drop first
Awesome! I played the PS2 version and wouldn't mind picking it up again. I also had the Xbox version of the sequel, but I never got to it. I hope they release that one too.
Seems pricey. Game was just fine, nothing fantastic. Basically a diablo clone w/D&D skin. Lots of companies were doing that around that time.
30 is more than fair for having a team port a game over, a phenomenal game at that. People love to cry over nothing. And whine at those that call them on it.
Link to the e-shop goes to a generic page and searching for doesn't find the game.... was it delayed?
@OorWullie This game isn't anything like the PC Baldur's Gate series though. Check Pillars of Eternity to get a better idea of what Baldur's Gate would be like on Switch.
I missed it unfortunately on the NGC but I might give it a chance if it gets a good discount in the future.
@neufel Ah yea, thought so you ment that one. Looks awesome, 2bad its not coming to NS.
The Switch eShop game page for Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance should go live soon.
@Dracavius I would say that most valid complaints come from everywhere outside of the US are paying a lot more for it. They pulling an EA thinking every currency is identical. I would jump at this personally if it had online, but unfortunately doesn't look likely, and a shame if 2 ever comes will be without online too.
Still got 2 on my PS2, though I recall it hogs so much of the memory card.
Interplay ❤️💛❤️ It would be so cool to see MDK or Giant citizens Kabuto & amazying Shiny catalogue on switch one day…
I loved playing this on PS2. It's silky smooth graphics are still entrancing if played on a CRT or with the right video cable to your HDTV. I'm not sure if I'll spend $30 on it, but it would be easier to make that purchase if it was on cartridge.
Awesome!
Wait, $30?!? Hahahaha! No!
@MJF Joke’s on you if you really spend money on an overrated f2p game.
I choose waiting for a sale, however I have this feeling that by the time it happens, Diablo 2 gets a release date on Switch
@Mana_Knight Been a while but if I remember correctly the engine they used was from another game whose IP included the engine. So when the company who owned the IP found out they used it in the 2 BG:DA games, they sued. It's the reason there wasn't a BG:DA3.
@TSR3 dungeons and dragons: dark alliance, it's a third-person arpg, closer to looter shooters than a diablo-like game.
Indie devs are out there paying for artists, designers, writers, and all sorts of other positions not needed for straight ports, and charging less, and we honestly have people defending a £30 straight port.
still waiting for this to appear on eshop, i just need to know its dl size and whether or not it has online play.
@Friscobay Giants! Imagine if they did a remake where the tactical part was over a few levels rather than just the last ones of each section. What an outstanding game.
MDK2 still feels like a modern game on PC, would love a switch remaster
There's still nothing on the eshop !
Something I'll definitely put on my wishlist, but I do agree the price feels a bit high. I wonder how much the licensing for Forgotten Realms plays in that
@gurtifus It's live on the playstation network so it should be here soon on the eshop
I like the games but 30$ for a straight port is too much
Edit: it had windscreen everything is perfect I would pay100$ for pure widescreen
It's been live on other platforms for hours now, why isn't it on switch yet?
@ViridianVoodoo Black Isle just mentioned it's not coming out for the Switch today. They had an issue getting it on the eShop, and it's going to take them some time to get worked out.
https://twitter.com/BlackIsleStudio/status/1390699620473483264
Someone forgot to push the button for Switch release ! 🤔
@AllieKitsune Ah ok, too bad...
Man, I don't mean to be a Debbie-downer, but back in the day I felt this game was hot trash. Still surprises me to hear that I was basically 100% alone on that thought.
I remember being in love with Diablo 2 and Baldur's Gate, and then looking at this game and thinking "sooo which game are they trying to be? Because it looks like they failed to realize what was great about both games and gave us a Gauntlet 64 rip off instead."
@neufel Not live on Playstation, been looking for it can't find it
@ViridianVoodoo Oh man I love your icon. Scooby-Doo doesn't looked too scared of the nun.
@SDSU619 It's not going up on PSN in the US until 5 PM Eastern (2 PM Pacific).
A sad Mario.
Poor plumber.
@Eddy9000 because those games are art pieces, are timeless. Mdk2 + Messiah + Sacrifice…
@AllieKitsune Thank you, I will keep an eye out for it
@BetterThanVegas I think you’re right about the IP, and it’s also the reason BG:DA2 never ported to the GameCube.
@Liam_Doolan Will NL be doing a review of this, when it does finally come out?
@AllieKitsune I thought Black Isle was defunct.
I'm actually glad to hear this, as I initially thought that Russia had been excluded from getting the game.
https://www.reactiongifs.us/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/raised_hopes_futurama.gif
@Mr-Fuggles777 I was shock to see that the pound price is matching the Euro price also.
@the_beaver What you are forgetting is for Americans the price doesn't include tax while the European price does include tax.
Ugh yes please. I had bought this on both the PS2 and the GameCube. I love this game. Very nostalgic for me.
This is actually what I was hoping for when I heard that Baldur's Gate I & II were coming to the Switch because I didn't know that neither one was Dark Alliance. I want to be excited, but for $30, I'm not so sure considering how old this game is. I guess it's technically cheaper today, especially accounting for inflation, but age almost always has a devaluing effect on video games and this is no exception. I'm holding out on Cotton Reboot for the same reason.
That pic of the Beholder looks like a shot I remember from ONM back in the day. Thanks for making me feel old again Nintendo Life.
@Flashlink99 joke's on you if you insult other people for buying a game and then you buy it when it's on sale.
@TSR3 Yeah, I think so.
Just an update: PJ O'Reilly will be handling it!
@DrDaisy
"but age almost always has a devaluing effect on video games and this is no exception."
I feel the exact same way about Nintendo and it's fans trying to justify 3D All-Stars' msrp.
@SeantheDon29 I guess so. To be fair, each game in Super Mario 3D All-Stars amounts to roughly $20 per title when they used to individually cost at least $50 at the times of their initial release dates, but charging $60 for Skyward Sword is just insulting.
@Nanoline52 that’s for a physical copy tho. Digital should be cheaper.
Not at that price point. I'll wait for the current gen version releasing this summer for almost the same price
@OorWullie
Baldur’s Gate I&II are masterpieces. Can’t recommend enough. I could never get into DA however. Anyway, my two cents. ☺️
@MJF I was talking about wasting money on Fortnite Skins. (Overrated f2p game = Fortnite)
I have nothing against Dark Alliance, in fact I might get it since I like Baldur’s Gate, but 30 bucks seems really steep at the moment, that is all
The price pretty much killed all interest.
I usually dig a good ARPG and the Dark Alliance games a pretty good, but it's a straight port of only one game.
And people took a look at the PlayStation Trophy list which was...pitiful... Clear trophies for all difficulties...that's it.
With that level of care put into it, the price tag is just way out of proportion.
Personally, I absolutely love ARPG's. I have Diablo 3, Victor Vran, Titan, Torchlight 2, Nine Parchments all on my Switch (or in the fridge, but still bought). I plan on picking up Diablo 2 whenever its given an actual release date. And the BG:DA games in particular I adore. Back when I was married years ago, it was one of the few games I could get my ex-wife in to playing with me. I still remember the many hours we spent hunting together in this game. Does the price tag seem kind of steep? Yeah, it does...but I'm going to get it anyway. I had no idea this was coming to the eShop until today. Now I'm just sad its been delayed, or I'd be adventuring in Baldur's Gate again right now!
@Flashlink99 oh Fortnite isn't overrated at all.
you just don't like it.
you don't have to like nice things.
when I put in a bunch of time on a free game - I spend money in the game.
I don't mind supporting creators when I appreciate their content. I'm not a leecher.
Also - it isn't a "waste" of money if your skin gives you an advantage in some way.
@Nanoline52 it was £10-£15 here in the U.K as it was actually a fairly dull game. The 9.4 review was way overhyped. It is more like an occasionally enjoyable 7.
This re release HAS indeed caused the prices to rise. Some jokers are even charging £30+ for it. Absolutely crazy.
@Nanoline52
Oh here in Europe it goes for less ^^
Bought mine 2 Years ago for 18€
Champions of Norrath was another great arpg from that era. Think I will pass on a rerelease though.
No online play, the single player is 20 hours long at most, for a 15+ year old game, yeah hard pass.
Back when this game originally released, if you were a console gamer who liked ARPGs, this was basically your only choice. And the game is quite decent! I had a blast co-oping through this on the GameCube.
Fast forward to today, where the current consoles have Diablo 3, Titan Quest, soon D2 Resurrected and others... The game isn't really as good as any of those. I've played through every ARPG I just listed, some of them for thousands of hours. If you have $30 and you want a great ARPG D3 and TQ offer so much more than BG:DA.
That said, if you are a fan of the original release or really, really like Forgotten Realms, you will probably enjoy this. I'd still recommend waiting for a sale though, the game is very short.
BGDA was so good. I remember the music, the atmosphere. You begin it, you're hooked.
But I also remember the frustration when I've finished it. When I thought I've just passed the introduction, it was the end of the game!
Far far away of diablo for example, despite a good moment..
Interested, but only if it were $20 or less. If I've gotta wait for a sale, I'll wait for sub-$10. My backlog is already packed.
