Update #2: SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millenium is available to download from the eShop now, and you can watch the lovely launch trailer above.

Update #1 [Fri 5th Feb, 2021 08:20 GMT]: Last month, SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millenium was rated for the Switch by the South Korean ratings board.

It was only a matter of time until the game was officially confirmed, and it seems today is that day. SNK has just announced the Neo Geo Pocket Color version of the popular fighting crossover will be coming to the Switch eShop on 17th February.

This 1999 release starts out with 18 fighters to select from, and there's an additional eight characters to unlock. In terms of modes, there's single, tag and team battle.

You'll also be able to "play VS Mode battles and exchange various data" and in addition to this, there's a "new" SC Olympic Mode where you can strive to break all records.

Will you be joining the fight when this pocket-sized version of SNK vs. Capcom arrives on the Switch eShop? Tell us below.

Original Story [Fri 22nd Jan, 2021 10:00 GMT]: Back in the '90s, the sheer notion of Capcom and SNK working together was as unlikely as Sega and Nintendo putting down their weapons and making friends (like that would ever happen, right?!). So, when these two fighting game greats announced a series of crossover games at the close of the decade, it caused quite a stir.

We got Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 on the Dreamcast, alongside SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighter's Clash on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Alongside that, we also got SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium on SNK's handheld – arguably one of the best portable one-on-one fighters ever made. This collaboration would also give us Capcom vs. SNK 2 on Dreamcast (later ported to the PS2, GameCube and Xbox) and SNK vs. Capcom Choas on Neo Geo, as well as the rather disappointing SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS a short time later.

As the name of this sub-series suggests, each game boasted characters from the respective franchises owned by these two Japanese giants. So Street Fighter's cast clashed with the stars of King of Fighters – that kind of thing. Match of the Millennium took things to the next level and even included the likes of Arthur from Ghosts 'n Goblins in his very own mini-game. Interestingly, the Neo Geo Pocket Color title could connect to the Dreamcast Capcom vs. SNK via a special link cable, allowing you to unlock characters by earning points when playing on the move.

According to the South Korean ratings board, SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium is headed to the Switch. The game has recently been rated for release in that region – a pretty solid indication that a game is inbound. This will presumably be part of SNK's current drive to release several of its most notable Neo Geo Pocket Color titles on Switch; we've already had SNK Gals' Fighters, Samurai Shodown II, The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny and Fatal Fury First Contact.

What makes this new release notable is that it's an indication that SNK and Capcom are willing to work together again. While SNK developed and published this particular game, it contains Capcom's IP so we'd assume a fresh agreement had to be signed for this re-release to take place.

Could we potentially see other titles in the Capcom vs. SNK series released on modern platforms? Or perhaps the two companies are working on a brand-new crossover release?

Thanks to Greatsong for the tip!
