Warner Bros. has officially released its first-look at New Line Cinema's upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot movie, which will air in theatres and exclusively on HBO Max on 16th April.
The film will recreate the Mortal Kombat tournament with familiar characters like Sonya Blade, Jax, Raiden, Liu Kang, Kano, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Goro and Shang Tsung, while a young MMA fighter named Cole Young takes the spotlight. Warning: the trailer below contains graphic violence and swearing.
The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuid - who makes his feature directorial debut, and the producers include James Wan (Aquaman), Todd Garner (Into the Storm), E.Bennett Walsh (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). So, what are your early impressions? Let us know in the comments.

10/10 right here. Putting kindergartners everywhere to shame.
It's a pity that they have invested what looks like a decent amount in to the VFX but they couldn't cobble together a decent script.
This is gonna be campy as hell, I can feel it already. There's just way too many characters to give fan service to and that's gonna be hard to balance with non-gamers/normies getting confused by a large cast of odd characters to them.
It looks.good from the trailers but it's suppose to. The problem is they try to take something like Mortal Kombat and try and make a story that lasts for several hours which you just can't.
Is it me or are video game movies really starting to try and be good.
Fantastic.. can't wait for this.
I'm going to tell the directors to GET OVER HERE and make a better movie.
Amazing trailer. Man that subzero looks cool.
I hope the movie is as good or even better than the trailer.
@gutrippabear Actually they removed a lot of them from the script. Johnny Cage being among the most notable.
As far as costumes go it looks bloody awsome. That scorpion sub zero looks smashing (pun intended) and the effects look pretty cool too. Glad to see no pandering about when it comes to the blood either.
Im not sure on the story tho... But hey, even if we get an OK movie based off a video game, still better than 99% of the others out there.
@Silly_G So you don't think that was a gag?
@gutrippabear I'm ready for it. A Mortal Kombat movie SHOULD be campy. As long as it has great choreography and is shot well (everything tends to be close-up shakycam now, but that rope dart fight with Sanada looks GREAT), then it'll be exactly what I want to see.
@Silly_G @backup368 When I read the comment before I watched the trailer I thought it was actually a funny gag but then in the trailer the quote is in a dead serious tone and the music doesn't frame it as a gag...bizarre misfire, honestly.
It looks to be a fantastic movie, the only few concerns I see though: Mileena's teeths doesn't look accurate, Sub-Zero seem like a bad guy so will there be a second Sub-Zero later on, no Kitana, Baraka, and Johnny Cage yet, not sure if they are in a tournament or a war, they mention the tournament but the trailer makes it seem like there isn't one, still unsure about this Cole Young character yet but he doesn't look like an annoying character so I'll give him a chance, and was that suppose to be Reptile at the end? Either way looks promising, I'm planning to watch it on HBO Max at my bro's place come April, hope it's at least better than Annihilation and Legacy.
Let's be honest, nothing will beat the masterpiece that is Moral Kombat: Federation of Martial Arts.
Looks more like Michael Bay paint-by-numbers cringe.
Moooortaaal Kombat!!!!!!!!! Your soul is mine!
Wheres the theme song?
I hope this new Mortal Kombat movie will be rated R unlike the 1995 movie.
Will this be a good movie if fans complain about the wardrobe?
i really hope the movie is good. the voice actors seem a pretty good fit for the characters. and it does look really promising from the trailer too.
LOL was Kano always an Aussie?
Where the hell is Johnny Cage?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Was that the only thing in accurate about Mileena?
With this and the MH movie coming, are we back to terrible video game movie adaptations?
I went to see the original in the theater as a teen and thought it was the coolest thing ever! To this day it's probably still my favorite game movie of all time! It's a 90's cheese fest for sure now but seeing it at the time when MK was everywhere and at the peak of it's popularity was pretty neat!
That first trailer from the original where it shows sub-zero running up the wall and doing a back flip was awesome!
This reboot looks alright i guess. Certainly it will have some thrilling fight scenes and be a fun couple hours of watching guys and gals beating the crap outta eachother. I just hope it's not a movie of nothing but fight after fight with a paper thin plot and cornball humor.
Surely they can do better than MK annihilation. Talk about a disaster!
Decent, but we old people with kids are biaised by the seminal first, cheesiest action movie ever.
Will we pay to show « that new one » to our kids, not sure...
@backup368 Yep, I also thought of it as a gag, but it was edited in the trailer to sound more serious than it will probably be in the final movie.
" on a mission in BRAZIL "
OH YEAH! Lindomar will be playing Sub-Zero!!
Pure cheese but i will watch it anyway.
@timp29 yep.
@Devlind How can you possibly know that. Have you had advanced screening of the movie? I didn't see this trailer as terrible, it looked pretty dam cool. You're expecting some Lord of the Rings style epic?!? jeez. It's a video game adaptation, said video game had barely any plot anyway. So long as the action is great and the story kinda hangs together, it should be a fun couple of hours max.
Monster Hunter granted has tons of mythology and throwing in people from earth into it seems dumb. I get that and I'd agree that already sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I've not seen it yet, so I'll reserve judgment til then.
@Tasuki You definitely can, if you have a decent writer and director. That trailer seemed show that they're looking at each of the protagonists backstory too, there was definitely a Scorpion flashback there I think. So it can. Stretching it out to a TV series, like they did in the 90's that's when its becomes difficult to do.
@timp29 I think he was east London in the first movie. But hell he can be from anywhere if you want. An ozzy kinda fits though, so I'm good with it.
Well it looks far less cringe than the 90's thing, which I enjoyed as a kid. I'm open for it.
What! No cheesy, 90s techno theme song?? What shenanigans is this?!?!
Looks *****, in a good way. I'll watch this when I am hungover for sure...
Looks OK I guess. Loved the original when it first came out as, like a lot of us oldies, we were caught up in Mortal Kombat mania. Watching it now though, it is pure Paul WS Anderson trash (naff CGI, poor use of Raiden, a cheap Sub Zero death, a crappy looking Goro and a duff way to introduce Reptile in the mix just for, ya know, the sake of it). I don't feel it from this trailer, but I hope the tournament is the main plot and not some war movie shenanigans al la Street Fighter The Movie. But I guess we'll just have to cross our fingers and look to la Luna.
looks like it could be really good. first detective pikachu. then sonic and now this. Video game movies are finally getting good. oh and by the way Sonic movie is now available on hulu and amazon prime. it is a fun movie to watch.
Looks cool, but why mess with that Dragon Logo? That cyberdragon is so wrong.
@xxx128 Yeah, l also hate it when people like blades with blood on them. It look so cringe.
Mortal Kombat, not to be confused with Mortal Kombat.
@timp29 in MK11 the voice actor appeared to continously shift between aussie and cockney, I never knew if that was intentional.
Cole Young looks like the most boring character of the lot 😴
I think it looks great!
Obviously you have to take it for what it is but at least it looks like people who know the source material have made it.
I'm not a fan of Mortal Kombat (SF2 ftw!) but I thought they did a good job with this. I mean, the premise of the games is a bit cringy, so naturally that will resonate with any film they do. But I didn't think it looks rubbish at all.
The trailer was pretty awesome, hopefully the movie will be enjoyable as I really want to like this one.
@michellelynn0976 Agreed, both Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog were really good, hopefully the new Mortal Kombat movie can keep that trend going.
I already said this in a previous article in regards to this movie but this is how I approach video game movies. I approach video game movies like a big family Thanksgiving dinner gathering. I'm going to be annoyed, unintentionally insulted (and sometimes intentionally), embarrassed, at times angry, awkward, and overall not looking forward to the torture. However, if I keep my expectations on the floor to begin with and crack open as many beers prior AND during the event I'm bound to have a better time through it and just be entertained.
I thought the trailer looked really good
Remember playing the very first one and loving it
Looking forward to giving this a watch
The original film adaptation is one of my favorite B-movies. I don't expect to like this as much, but if the fights are suitably fun, I'll be satisfied.
Waste of money
@Dethmunk Based on previous experiences. Movie studios adapted video games to movies before and most of them were hilariously bad. They did stop eventually, but now with these movies coming out I just wondered if it's going to be the same.
All I can say is it doesn't look bad.
@backup368 No Johnny? No thanks.
Always interesting to see so many differing opinions on the same topic. I'm in the positive camp, though.
I thought it looked better and more professionally shot than any other Mortal Kombat movie before this one, and the special effects do indeed look good, and like they were made by people who love and understand the games, so I'm definitely hopeful that the end result of this is going to be an entertaining experience.
This is going to be horrible. Only thing it has going for it is Hiroyuki Sanada.
@ThanosReXXX
“ I thought it looked better and more professionally shot than any other Mortal Kombat movie before this one”
I don’t think they had to try very hard. Don’t get me wrong, I was a teenager when the original movie came out and I did enjoy it...cheese and all.
@Sourcecode I did too, and I still own the DVD. I also have the more recent web series on disc and hard drive, but this still looks better to me, personally. Of course, that's obviously just a taste or opinion thing, so feel free to disagree...
@Freddyfred did you not catch the remix towards the end of the trailer?
