One game that deserves some more love is the Bandai Namco developed Switch, Wii U and arcade title, Pokkén Tournament.
It was well-received on all three occasions but since then fans of this unique fighter have been wondering if there'll be any future follow-ups. A Twitter follower of Katsuhiro Harada (the director of Tekken 7 and a producer on Pokkén) asked the industry icon if he would be open to returning for a sequel.
While Harada would definitely "like to" - as usual, it's yet another situation that's out of the actual developer's control (in this case, Bandai Namco). As noted below, it's ultimately up to Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. On a more promising note, Bandai Namco obviously maintains a good - if not great - relationship with both of these parties.
About the most Nintendo has done in recent times, in relation to Pokkén Tournament, is offer a trial to Switch Online subscribers in July last year. With Pokémon's 25th anniversary taking place next month, who knows what could happen.
As for Harada, earlier this month, he was hinting at his new game under Bandai Namco being quite possibly the most expensive project the Japanese publisher has ever given the green light - and it might not even be a fighting game!
Would you like to see Pokkén Tournament get a full-on sequel in the future? How do you think Bandai Namco could improve it? Share your thoughts down below.

I would be up for another game as long as it has alot more pokemon and at least one form eche gen so far.
Maybe after they're done with Pokemon Snap...
Please Sawk for Pokken 2 !
He is so handsome Karate Pokemon. 😍
I would love a sequel to Pokkén, it’s a very underrated game.
Pokken was fun but I'm personally not into Tekken's kind of gameplay. It always kind of disoriented me as someone so used to traditional 2D or 2.5D fighters
Also on that note what the hell happened to Tekken x Street Fighter? (The game announced alongside SFxTekken)
I would appreciate a complete physical edition of the existing game first.
@Snatcher That's really MY biggest complaint.. I'm not the biggest Pokemon fan, but I KNOW there some 800+ Pokemon out there. Now, I know not ALL of them are capable of being an actual fighter, but certainly more than what even Pokemon DX offered... not only that, but there were some odd omissions like Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, two Pokemon that are ACTUALLY fighters, and instead we had clone characters like Pikachu Libre and Shadow MewTwo... Yes, I KNOW they fight differently, but I feel that they should go through the list of actual potential pokemon before adding in clone characters.
Do it
Doooo itttttt
I would prefer TEKKEN to Pokken on Switch from Namco. Even Wii U had a Tekken on it!
@TheFrenchiestFry Either in development hell or was cancelled, sadly. At one point it was supposed to be about 30% done, but then Harada made a statement saying they didn't want to split the fanbases with Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 out. The last update was Harada saying he wanted to release the game but his business side was questioning if he should. That was 2019
@TheFrenchiestFry SF x Tekken happened. Seriously the first game had a troubled development (a lot of money sunk into licensed music and outsourced cgi scenes), a scandal over the on disc dlc (and backlash over the sony only fighters), the gems mechanic was half banned (and hated as it was micro transactions), it was really unbalanced (mostly due to gems, not so bad without and was patched at the end of its life) and it didn’t really recoup dev costs in sales.
I think Ono got semi demoted over it or at least that’s when opinions of him started to seriously sour at Capcom. I mean after that Capcom started having misfires all over the place. As much as I love the fighting game resurgence, Capcom was spitting out too many games at one time while forgetting that it wasn’t the 90’s anymore when that was justified.
Harada side stepped T x SF after seeing all that and instead just made a bunch more Tekken games. He makes a PR statement from time to time but that game is dead.
That being said the FINAL version of SFxT is a pretty good game.
I would buy a new pokken though (not a fan of tekken)
I never tried this game. I would if it ever lower it's the price. Not going to pay full price for a game that may or may not be dead.
How about Tekken on the switch? that IS a Namco decision. .
I do think console spin-off titles like these in recent years have provided value for the Pokémon series where the mainline games have been severely lacking (this has generally been the case throughout the series' history to varying degrees, if one is being totally honest, as the mainline games even at their best were never the most ambitious titles on the platforms they appeared on, especially over time). It would be great to see a follow-up to Pokkén or similar Pokémon spin-offs in the future to offset the negativity generated by Game Freak's output, anything from a new Pokémon Stadium title to Pokémon spin-offs set in entirely new genres for the series (a Luigi's Mansion style "horror" mystery game, perhaps? An open-world Pokémon Snap photography adventure game? A Pokémon sports game? The untapped potential of the IP is virtually unlimited).
Idk, a 3D arena fighter after they fudged up jump force doesn't sound great. How about Arc Sys get a shot at a 2D?
@Bl4ckb100d The Mario costumes in Tekken Tag 2 on Wii U are still the best.
Bandai really have set the standard of what Pokémon games should look like on a home console; unlike TPC and GameFreak.
Liked the game.
But i would like them to have a fighting game like this with the smash roster (nintendo characters) with the engine of naruto (game)
@Menardi I love how you talk about this as if the bubble represents the mass market lol
@SeantheDon29 TPC is literally the publisher of Pokkén (and any pokemon game) in all of its platforms and they aren't a developer.
considering how good the relationship with Nintendo/Pokémon Company is, there a huge possibilty of a Pokkén Tournament sequel on Switch or it sucessor.
My favourite fighter this generation. I hope it comes back.
@Nemure It's OK, you personally are allowed to enjoy Sword and Shield, you don't have to pretend it wasn't a divisive entry by assuming every single user who contributed towards its sales total by purchasing it was fully satisfied with it (or any of the products they've released prior to it that have also been steadily declining in reception over the years — it's hardly an incorrect statement to suggest the Pokémon IP is nowhere near as well received as it has been in the past). Additionally, Nintendo is the publisher for all Pokémon titles, by the way, not The Pokémon Company.
I rather liked the original Pokken Tournament for what it was, I would be all for a second Pokken game being released. Having said that, the game would need to have a bigger roster of Pokemon to choose from. With such a small roster (twenty-three Pokemon on the Switch version), so many Pokemon that would have made sense for this type of game was left out.
Please. It'd just need more Pokemon.
@TheFrenchiestFry Street Fighter X Tekken was controversial because of the gems mechanics, and Tekken 7 did well enough that Namco no longer saw it as a priority. Personally I loved all SF versions on the ps3 (including X Tekken) and would have loved to see Namco's take on the characters. I'm gutted every time I'm reminded of it, which isn't very often these days.
Yesssss! Thanks for the tip, Harada.
That would be awesome. Would love to see a new one that has a sizeable roster and is supported long term ala Smash Ultimate, SFV and Tekken 7.
@doctorhino Pokken predates Jump Force dude, and they don't have anywhere close to the same fighting mechanics.
can we have a pokemon colosseum /battle revolution type game instead ?
You know what you do have control over? Tekken 7 switch port please make it happen harada.
A Tekken game on Nintendo Switch would be pretty epic. I would definitely play it.
@Snatcher More Pokémon would be nice but I feel it needs more things than that to become a big hit, like a much better story mode and simplified combat. I personally think they should scrap the 2d combat and just have 3d combat.
I wasn't that impressed with the game. But that's probably because I don't like fighting games in general though. They never hold my attention for more than a few hours. Just enough to try every character and run through the arcade mode a couple times.
Add Roserade, Absol, Lopunny and Hawlucha as fighters.
I’d love to have a sequel to Pokken! More playable pokemon (Really want Urshifu), improved graphics and gameplay, more trainer customization.
I could see it getting a sequel, it IS used in TPCi-tournaments and was meant to be included in the 2020 World Championship as a third competitive pillar until COVID forced its postponement.
All I can really hope for is that we TRY to avoid the embarrassment and vitriol surrounding Pokken’s EVO 2016 results.
Pokkén Tournament does deserve another shot, being a game that didn't do as well as I would've expected, even on the Switch (because of ARMS).
It also needs some way of attracting more Tekken players. The gameplay fell a little short on the competitive side of things.
@TheFrenchiestFry the disaster of the first game killed any hope of a second title.
@NathanTheAsian 1.3m sales for a Wii U port. The game hit it's expectations and some.
I doubt to see a sequel to this zany fighting game. I still have two of it's weird analog dpad controllers.
Played the demo on switch & it was really fun
I’d be down for a second game. I’d need about twice as many Pokémon and maybe a beefed up story mode. Maybe add in some alternate modes as well.
Could you imagine a 3 vs 3 MVC-like Pokken Tournament?
I wouldn't mind a sequel, as long as they try as hard as they did with the original. Still annoyed that the DX port did so little.
@MegaVel91 I realize that but they just haven't had a lot of good fighting games since the first one came out way back in 2015. naruto is really their main fighting game draw and they even jacked up the last one of those games (Shinobi Striker). What's the point of taking a gamble on them with your biggest series again.
I don't think the Namco games really count as we know who ends up handling all the anime series and it's Bandai.
Eh, i really think namco should do continue on Tekken x Street fighter's development after Tekken 7, i could have sworn Harada has stated many times that it's close to ready.
Yeah sure make a sequel but put more pokemon in the game
Pokemon Warriors. do iiiiiit
@RelentlessZard Why add dlc when you can have a whole new game?
